Chapter Seven
Spike was dreaming. He grabbed Willow by the shoulders, bent his head and sunk his fangs into her throat. The taste of her blood sent waves of pleasure through his veins. He let her body drop to the ground. Then he chased Dawn down an alleyway, easily catching her. He snapped her neck and then quickly sank his fangs into her to drink the still-warm blood. Spike woke up with a start, sitting up in bed. He put his head in his hands. The demon in him had enjoyed that dream and he could never tell Buffy about it. She still didn’t understand who he was or what he was capable of. And he was hungry right now. They hadn’t brought any blood or any other provisions with them on this trip and Spike was starting to think the whole thing was just stupid. He loved her more than anything in the world, but he knew in the long run this wasn’t going to work. Buffy woke up beside him.
“Spike?” She sat up and put a warm hand on his shoulder.
He shrugged her hand off and got out of the bed, he reached for his pants and started to get dressed.
Buffy could tell something was wrong, but she didn’t know what.
“You still haven’t forgiven them, have you?” He stood next to the bed, looking at her. Her hair was messed up from their lovemaking. He thought she was beautiful.
“What?”
“You’re punishing them. That’s why you married me, that’s why we’re here. You haven’t forgiven them for bringing you back and you’re using me to make them pay for it.”
“That’s not true!” Buffy was shocked. “I love you as much as you love me. How can you say these things?”
He turned away from her and went to the window, hands gripping the curtains, but he couldn’t open the shade because of the sunlight. That made him more frustrated. He was starving and he couldn’t even go out and try to find himself something to eat.
Buffy got out of the bed and grabbed her clothes. She put them on quickly. Then she went to him and grabbed his arm, forcing him to face her. She saw fear in his eyes. She reached up a hand and touched his face. “I am not using you. Maybe at first, before. But I always had feelings for you. I do love you, Spike, and I am not going to leave you.”
“You still don’t understand. What do you think I am, Buffy? What do you think I would be doing if they hadn’t jammed this chip into my head? Do you think I’d still want a bag full of animal blood then? You married a daemon. Are you even aware of that?” He pulled away from her and went to sit in a chair across the room.
Buffy put her hands on her hips. “I haven’t forgotten anything. I know who you are, and I know who you once were. And you know what, I still love you anyway.” She went to grab a glass ashtray off the nitestand. Smashing it, she took the broken glass and slit her wrist. “I love the daemon part of you, just as much as I love the human part.” She went over to him, knelt down and put her wrist up to his face.
The smell of her blood was driving him wild. “No! This is wrong, Buffy, I am not going to drink from you.”
“Yes, you are. We didn’t bring anything with us, so until we find something better, you are. I am not afraid of who I married, Spike. If there comes a day when that chip stops working and you do turn on me, I will stake you. I did it to Angel, I can do it to you. But until that day comes, and I hope it never does, we are going to take each moment we have together and enjoy it. I love you, Spike, and I married you because I love you, not for any other reason.” She offered her wrist to him again. This time he did take it, and he drank from her. The taste of her Slayer blood scared him alittle. The daemon in him wanted more, but he pushed her away after only a cup’s worth, wiping off his mouth.
“You can’t carry me forever, you know.”
“I know. I don’t plan on it.” She smiled. “That’s part of having an adventure, you know. Never knowing what’s going to happen. We will find you something to eat, you’ll see. And I need something to eat, too.” Buffy stood and went over to the door. “I’m going to go see what I can get for both of us to eat. Why don’t you look at that old map while I’m gone. See where we should be going next.” She winked at him as she closed the door.
