Chapter 6 : Family Reunion
(THC – Need to destroy)
It was very late when Buffy came back from the hospital. She talked about a new bad guy, a priest working for the First and told everyone to go to sleep. Shannah and Faith chatted outside until the break of dawn. When the young brunette entered her bedroom, she noticed Kennedy standing by the window, looking at the sunrise.
“Hey...” she whispered in the potential’s ear, putting her chin on the tanned and soft skin of Kennedy’s shoulder. “Something wrong?” Shannah realized that the girl was quite tensed.
“No” the SIT replied in a cold tone and went out of the room. Shannah frowned and went after her.
“Tell me what’s going on!” she said in a calm tone, catching the girl’s hand as they were entering the empty kitchen. Kennedy turned to face Shannah, she looked pretty upset.
“What did it mean to you?” she asked angrily.
“What meant what to me?” the brunette was quite confused, she didn’t understand Kennedy’s behavior. The Latino girl stared deep into Shannah’s eyes and the Phoenix felt like a vampire the SIT would stake in a sec.
“The kiss...” Kennedy stated coldly. The young brunette opened her mouth but was unable to speak. She broke the eye contact between them and looked at her feet.
“Well, your silence says a lot.” She turned to leave, but Shannah called her back.
“Wait...” her voice was almost inaudible, but Kennedy stopped. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to hurt you. It’s just...”
“It’s just what?” Kennedy shouted. Shannah hated that...she hated when someone was screaming at her. There were too many bad memories related to that kind of screams. The dark brunette tightened her fists so much her knuckles were turning white. She was trying to control herself so her claws would not go out.
“Tell me your fuckin’ problem!” The potential continued.
“I can’t! I just can’t! Okay?” Shannah exploded. She banged her fist on the table and her claws went out, smashing a mug into pieces. Kennedy stared at her with a look both fearful and sad. She left without saying a word. Both Buffy and Willow burst into the kitchen, awaken by the noise coming from downstairs.
“What happened?” Willow asked worried, staring at the pieces of mug scattered on the floor.
“Nothing it’s alright, I just...broke a mug, sorry.” Shannah replied, drawing in her claws.
“Uh uh...” Buffy said. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure”
“Why are your eyes fully black?”

“The potential he hurt said he had something for me. So the plan is to follow one of those blind guys and he will show us where the priest hides. Willow, you’ll stay here and keep some potentials with you. The others, we’ll split in two groups. Shannah, you go with Faith, you’re our back up. I’ll be with Spike. And now pay attention potentials, I’m gonna tell you in which group you are...” Buffy was standing in the middle of the living room, explaining her plan to everyone.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Faith murmured to Shannah who was sharpening her blades.
“Nothing...” the girl replied casually.
“Come on, I know you Shay! I know when there’s something bothering you!”
“Drop it. I don’t wanna talk.” Shannah said, still focusing on her claws.
They were all walking in the dark, spying on a Bringer. Shannah was flying above the group to check the area. From time to time she was glancing at Kennedy who was fully focused on each suspect sound she could hear. The Bringer entered a vineyard and soon, other Bringers joined him. Shannah landed in front of the group.
“There are no Bringers around, they’re all in this vineyard.” She said as she was changing.
“Okay, we’re going in. When you hear sounds of a fight, you come down. Is that alright?” Buffy asked.
“Buffy, I must go down with you, it’s my mission.” Shannah took a step forward. The Slayer looked from Spike to Shannah and nodded.
“Don’t worry B, we’ll be fine up here. Birdy said there’s no danger.” Faith said and she received a deadly stare from Shannah for the nickname part.
“Right. Let’s go! Some blind guys need their ass kicked!”

It went bad. They had been surrounded by Bringers, and this Caleb guy had killed them one by one until Buffy decided of their retreat. They were badly injured, Rona had a broken arm, Xander was now one-eyed, and Shannah herself had been stabbed several times. But as soon as she was out of the vineyard, her wounds had healed fast. Inside her, she knew that she could have killed Caleb, but she had to watch over the others and especially Kennedy. The Latino girl had almost been killed when she had attacked Caleb, she had fainted because of the harsh pain inside her head. After that, Shannah had protected her from the Bringers, and tried her best to do the same with Buffy. For now, she was next to Kennedy who was still sleeping. The others were trying their best to rest and heal from their injuries. Buffy was alone in her room, she didn’t want to see anybody.
“Hey sleepy head... You’re gonna be fine pretty soon. I swear.” The brunette kissed Kennedy’s forehead and left the room. She went outside in the backyard and lit a cig. It was very dark outside, the only light sources were the full moon and the tip of her cigarette. Suddenly she felt a presence around her. In a second, her claws were out of her fists. She stared at the darkness, trying to distinguish some figures. She jumped when she saw a fireball hit the ground in front of her and set on fire the grass.

“Who’s here?” she called with anger.
“An old relative...” a male voice answered her. Shannah couldn’t believe it when she saw the man’s face lit by the flames. It wasn’t possible, after all those years...
“Zane...” she whispered.
“Hi sis! It’s been a long time...” the young man said with a sardonic smile.
“What are you doing here?” Shannah was trying to regain control of herself.
“You know why...for the Sublimination!”
“I have no time for this crap. We’re in a war!”
“I know...and you’ve chosen the wrong side, sis.” Zane smirked. “The First wanted one Phoenix on his side, he offered me a lot.” Shannah gaped at his words.
“You betrayed the mission, and you came here to kill me?” the brunette asked bitterly her twin brother.
“Here is not the right place. I’ll tell you later and also make sure that you’ll come.” All of a sudden, the fire went out. “Goodbye little sis...” He whispered before disappearing in the dark.
“Zane!” Shannah shouted, but he was already gone.
