The next morning Angel and Wesley arrived downstairs first, Mildred was already there, tea and warm blood waiting.
Wesley sighed as he sipped his tea, “Excellent tea Mildred”, she blushed, delighted to have pleased him.
Angel smiled at Wes, and then took a sip of his blood. He spluttered it tasted good, but decidedly odd. “What is this?” he demanded.
Mildred flustered, but came over to explain. “Michael said you did not like human blood, something to do with your soul, blah de blah, anyway it is my job to make sure you boys feed properly, including you mister”. She waved the ever present wooden spoon in his general direction. “So that is a mixture of angelic and animal blood. We need you at full strength, would be best if you’d let us use human blood, but we shall see how you do on this.” As she turned back to her pancake making, she spoke over her shoulder, “Vampires need human blood, the Powers chose a vampire as their champion, think about it”.
Wes didn’t know what to say, so kept quiet. He whole heartedly agreed with Mildred, though he doubted Angel would appreciate that right now.
“You agree with her don’t you?” he tickled a startled Wes. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to brood”. He kissed his consort, only stopping when he sensed his Childe walk in.
Spike didn’t know what to do, he looked at Wes then Angel and back again. Even Xander could feel the difference in Angel. Spike put Xan slightly behind him, as he tilted his head, eyes now locked on Angel’s “Sire?”
“Aye Childe, tis me, sane as I’m ever gonna be, soul in place” Angel knew the last few times Angelus had been free had not been much fun for Spike, and he had every right to be cautious.
“Wes?” Spike asked, his eyes not moving from Angel’s.
“The soul and Angelus have bonded, like your soul and demon have. Not sure if that makes him Angel or Angelus, both? Maybe we should change his name.” Wesley was all set to go into full watcher mode when Spike ran across the room, falling onto his knees, head bowed in front of Angel.
“Sire” he whispered his voice full of emotion.
“Childe. My beautiful boy, come to me” Angel tilted Spikes head up with a finger, and then held his arms open for Spike to fall in to.
Spike flung himself into his sire’s arms. He had missed his real Sire so much. Time had not made any difference to the ache in his heart. As far as Spike was concerned the only moment of clarity Angelus had shown since the soul, was to give Xander to Spike.
Xander watched with his mouth open, he wanted to run away, not see his beloved in the arms of another. Yet deep down he knew better. Spike had told him just how Angelus had been in the early days, how he had been everything, and more to Spike, ‘his yoda’. He also knew that without Angelus pushing to the surface and making Angel give him to Spike as a gift from sire to childe, he probably would not have survived many more beatings from his father. He owed his life to the demon holding his mate. His heart went out to Spike, he could see his shoulders shaking, as he broke down, the years of pent up grief now released. Xander swallowed, and looked at Wes, “Maybe we should give them some space” he suggested, Wes looked about to agree.
Twin growls of “No,” that answered that one then.
Mildred patted a chair, “Come sit down honey, emotions are bound to run high at family reunions, but you four are all one family now, no running away” She ran her fingers through Xander's hair to calm him as he sat, she found herself with Xander leaning on her, excepting her hug and hair caressing. Poor love she thought, humans could be so cruel. Xander was treated better by these two demons than he had ever been by his family and friends. Mildred vowed no one would hurt this young man like that again. “He loves you, he won’t leave you, so stop thinking silly things” she whispered into his ear.
Xander looked at her startled. Oh yeah the angelic thing, all knowing. He did his best to stop thinking Spike would leave him for Angelus, but found it impossible. But he let Mildred comfort him, it was nice.
Wesley watched with interest, Angel had warned him Spike may scream, shout, throw the odd punch. He decided for himself, Spike had missed his true Sire more than Angelus had thought. Wesley had asked what Angel wanted to do about Spike, he told him, “hold him, tell him I am sorry for abandoning him, probably won’t let me near him though, I don’t deserve the title of sire after what I have done to him over the years”. Wesley smiled to himself, Angel/us had underestimated Spikes love, he still may punch Angel, but right now all he saw was a Childe that had been apart from his Sire far to long.
Wesley was not jealous, far from it. He longed to hug Spike, tell him it would all be alright. Angel looked over at Wes, mouthed ‘thank you’, as he hugged and rocked his Childe.
The peace could not last. Eventually Spike stood and began pacing.
“You absolute bastard you left me”
“I did, and I should of never of done so”
“You abandoned me, leaving me to look after Dru”
“I did”
“You never trusted me to help you with your soul, I would still have loved you”
“I know that now, I will never doubt you again”
Whatever Spike accused Angelus of, he agreed, apologised over and over.
Wesley and Xander watched, listened and ate pancakes while the blaming and apologising went on, and on. Both waiting for Spike to take a swing at Angel, but because he never denied anything, Spike never hit him.
“You just going to agree to all I say?” Spike asked in the end.
“Pretty much, I was a bastard, treated you like shit, I don’t deserve to have your loyalty now, never mind your love”
Out of steam, Spike sat next to Xan. Mildred put a mug of blood in front of him, and Xander fed him a bit of pancake.
“Why do I feel like I’m going in circles with this?” Spike asked no one in particular.
“Because you are” Mildred told him, unafraid to speak.
“The Sire/Childe bond between you both has never been broken, any time Angel has needed you, you have known and turned up. He in his own way has looked out for you, maybe in an odd way, but that was the soul clouding things, and the demon not accepting the soul didn’t help. You have both had the opportunity to dust the other, and not gone through with it”. She patted Spikes hand. “You are meant to be together; otherwise I would not be here. The past is over, forget it, move on. You both have consorts to look after, and are both now champions for the light, grow up and behave”.
Spike giggled as she clipped him around the ear. “Yes Mum” he said, earning himself a smile from her, he sipped at his blood, “Mmm, so good Milly” she had given Spike angelic and human blood, determined to get him in tiptop shape as soon as possible.
Angel now had time to study Spike and Xander. They were now more than Master vampire and Consort, he noticed the rings, the aura around them had changed, they were equals. He hoped it would do Xander's confidence good, the boy still thought Spike would one day leave him. And one thing Spike was, was loyal, once he loved you he never let go. He had never been more proud of Spike than now.
“Congratulations on your bonding as equals” he stood and hugged Xander then Spike.
“Your not mad? Not going to make Spike break it?” insecure Xan was back, sure Angelus would insist Spike do things his way. Maybe take Spike away from Xander.
Angel took Xander's left hand in his, kissing the ring, then hugging a surprised Xander tight. “You are family Xander, I am happy for you. All those years ago, the only way to save you was too gift you to my Childe. I could not turn you or keep you for myself, but I had to save you. I have never been more proud of Spike than I am over the way he has looked after you”.
Xander hugged back, being in Angel’s arms felt right, no wonder Spike had missed him so much.
“We are going to cure you of this insecurity Xan, you are stuck with all of us for good, now get that into your head and don’t forget it” Spike hugged Xan from behind, squashing him between himself and Angel, he held out a hand for Wesley, who shyly came over and allowed Spike to pull him into the hug.
Mildred smiled. “That looks like a Kodak moment if ever I saw one” she muttered as a helpful light flashed, capturing the moment forever.
Michael arrived. “Having fun folks?” He beamed a smile at the hugging. “You know, this being a hotel, you could probably get a room”, He may be teasing, but he was pleased, so far this was going according to plan, not something that normally happened around the two vampires.
