Don’t Leave Home

This section of the chapter becomes a bit darker than the rest and a lot more of the unanswered questions… well are answered. I also did a little something for all you true blue Lindsey fans…

Chapter Six – Don’t Leave Home

The haggard looking form just waved to the bar tender and within a few moments another bottle of whisky and a glass of ice to continue to drink the days away. The bar really never closed to certain clientele and the figure that continued to linger in the back for the past day or so was part of that exception. A woman sauntered into the bar from the back room; one hand was on her hip as she walked with a twist toward the drunken man seated toward the back of the bar.

The bar tender barely looked up at the sultry red head’s entrance. He was beyond use to her working his establishment by now. Besides the fact that she kept them in or near the bar making him a little bit more money, let alone the fact that he took a nice percentage of her earnings for himself.

Hank Summers knocked back another shot hoping to drown out the harsh reality that had become his life. He could barely remember his own name let alone the events past and that was exactly the way he liked it. The alcohol numbed the pain and even sometimes it made him forget but once it wore off all the pain and memories of a life and love lost would come flooding back. He wasn’t like he hadn’t tried to take control of his life again but it never lasted too long before he’d go spiraling back into a drunken oblivion.

Just a night or two ago, he couldn’t really be sure right now but it was the anniversary of his wife’s death. He long ago stopped going to work but that didn’t matter he had invested well and he was basically set to live more than comfortably for the rest of his god forsaken life. What he did remember though was the blood. It was literally everywhere some of it was still even underneath his fingernails. He wasn’t completely ignorant as to the torture he continually inflicted upon his daughter.

In fact begin that it was the five year anniversary he went to his wife’s grave and knelt before the grave marker with unshed tears in his eyes. He hadn’t really cried in so long he thought they’d dried up long ago, being there proved him wrong. As he kneeled before his wife he told her everything he’d done for the past five years to both their son and daughter. It seemed as though he was there for hours before he finally felt a light breeze begin to whirl around him, brushing against his cheeks almost as if it was attempting to wipe his tears away.

With a much lighter heart he turned and began to walk toward the wrought iron gates of Sunnydale’s many cemeteries. As he was walking toward a black jaguar went flying past him suddenly triggering memories and bringing all his recent wrongs to the forefront, muttering a curse he instantly turned and instead of going home to his daughter where he ought to be he headed toward the closest bar, he needed some alcohol just to make it all go away… if only for a little while.

Lindsey just smiled as he and his companion headed past the doorman into the elevator. Elizabeth had been in a good mood ever since her performance and it looked like it was going to stay that way for a good while. He had to admit that at first he was hurt and bit a confused as to why she didn’t tell him that she was going to perform again but as he watched her up on stage earlier that evening. Singing the song she’d written, it was almost like a balm to his heart… it was good to see his girl back where she belonged.

He couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up in his chest as he let out a chuckle. Elizabeth was absolutely adorable as she danced out of the elevator to the music in her head. Though when she began to sing he knew this was truly the beginning of something more.

“…it will seem, So yesterday, so yesterday, I'm just a bird that's already flown away…”

Elizabeth practically danced into the apartment humming to the music in her head. She hadn’t felt so good in such a long time. It had been forever since she played for a crowd like that; now she remember what a rush it was and there was no way she was going to give it up. She almost floated around the room as she kicked off her shoes and danced into the bedroom.

Lindsey just shook his head and locked the door. He himself kicked his shoes then padded softly toward the hallway closet. When he slid the door open there sat his own guitar. Out of respect for Elizabeth and her mother’s death he put it away and promised himself he wouldn’t play again until he knew it would be alright with Elizabeth again. He knew after tonight that there was no way she’d tell him no.

So when Elizabeth clad only in a pair of sleep pants and a tank top her face scrubbed clean of any make up; she found a relaxed Lindsey lazily strumming on his guitar trying to get it back into tune. Saying nothing as she crossed the room softly and placed herself at his feet, Lindsey just smiled softly at her and continued to play with the strings for a little longer. Eventually the comfortable silence was broken.

“What are you going to sing?” she asked softly

He didn’t answer her softly spoken question, his brown eyes merely locked with hers and he began to play, the chords rang softly out into the other wise quite room.

‘Like a ghost don't need a key
Your best friend I've come to be
Please don't think of getting up for me
You don't even need to speak
When I've been here for just one day
You'll already miss me if I go away
So close the blinds and shut the door
You won't need other friends anymore

Oh don't leave home, oh don't leave home

If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home’

Hank picked up another glass full of amber liquid and knocked it back. He smiled leeringly at the voluptuous red head walking toward him. She just smiled indulgently at him. When she was close enough his arm snaked out and dragged her flush up against him. He reeked of alcohol but she didn’t let it her affect her she flicked her tongue out passed her lips and began to lead him from the bar.

‘And I arrived when you were weak
I'll make you weaker, like a child
Now all your love you give to me

When your heart is all I need

Oh don't leave home, oh don't leave home’

Elizabeth just listened with her knees pulled up to her chest as her best friend played for her. She knew that this was one of his newer songs; otherwise she would’ve recognized it. She knew he was telling her something with his words and now she was going to listen.

‘If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home’

Hank didn’t care that he had no idea who the woman was in front of him. All that matter that she was there and she could make him forget for a little while longer. Beside the fact that he hadn’t any in a long while, this warm female body would do for the night and that was all that mattered.

‘Oh how quiet, quiet the world can be
When it's just you and little me
Everything is clear and everything is new
So you won't be leaving will you’

A lot of things had happened in their past and they had shared so much ever since they were children. Though neither of them were children anymore and it was time they both grew up. Lindsey continued to sing and Elizabeth continued to listen.

‘If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home

Cause I will be your safety
and I will be your safety
and I will be your safety’

Hank continued to take the woman any way he could think of. As long as it gave him the gratification he was after. Though none of it seemed to take away the pain of loosing his wife, his crimes against his own baby girl, nothing seemed to ease his pain let alone making it go away. So he decided to just continue what he’d been doing. There really was nothing that could save him from his own personal hell anymore.

When Hank woke the next morning he wasn’t surprised to see that his gold watch was gone and so was the fifty dollars that was in his wallet the night before. With a massive headache he dragged himself from the bed and dressed again. Since he had no money on him he had no choice but to go back to the house that held nothing but memories that caused him more pain.

So with that he left the room and stepped out into the early morning. Still just as broken and defeated the night before.

As the last chords rang out into the room Lindsey and Elizabeth were left just sitting there staring at one another wondering where they would go from there.
