Chapter 6: Anything You Want To Be

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Angel, we’ve been searching all day. My eyes hurt.” Fiona whined as shemmedmmed shut the dusty volume she was reading.
“I know, Fi. But we have to find out what’s happened to you.”
“Fine. Then let’s just go to Caritas and let Lorne read me.”
“I thought you didn’t want him to know about who you really are?”
“I would rather let him find out than have to read another book by some nearsighted, dim witted guy with exceptionally bad handwriting. I mean, Lorne won’t tell your friends, right?”
“Right.”
“So what’s the prob? Let’s go.”
It didn’t take the couple long to reach the demon karaoke club and luckily it was still early so the place was near empty. That meant they wouldn’t have to wait for the Host. As soon as they entered the green skinned demon made his way from the bar to where they stood by the doorway.
“Angel-cakes. To what do I owe the honor?” He inquired.
“You remember Fiona, right?” Angel asked, indicating his lover.
“How could I not? She’s the lady with the lovely piano skills.” Lorne said taking one of her hands and kissing the knuckles lightly.
“We were hoping you could do a reading for her.”
“Of course. The piano is yours, M’Lady and I’m all ears.” Lorne said with a smile.
Fiona smiled back then made her way to the stage.
“What’s this about?” Lorne asked.
“You’ll see.” Angel replied cryptically.
They watched as Fiona sat down, sent them a shaky smile, and began to play a slow melody. As she played she took a few calming breaths, praying to every god she knew of that Lorne wouldn’t say too much to Angel. She had picked a song she had written for the dark haired vampire, only he didn’t know it was about him, she figured singing something with deep emotional value would help Lorne with the reading. After another moment she closed her eyes and sang.
*Close the door
And leave the world behind you
Open a window
Listen to the breeze flow through the pines
Take a deep breath
What more can you do
Let the sun fall down
All around you
And let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down
That old dark cloud
Acts like he knows you
He takes up too much time,
Time you could be spending holding me
And he can't have you now
It's you and me here in this room
Let the sun fall down
All around you
And let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down
The world will keep on turning
It'll all be there come morning
So tonight
Let the sun fall down
All around you
And let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down
Let the sun fall down
All around you
And let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down*
Fiona stood and walked to the bar where Angel and Lorne now sat. It took the demon a moment to pick his jaw up off the floor so Fiona waited patiently while he composed himself.
“My, my. That was certainly interesting.” Lorne murmured.
“Do you know why we’re here?” Fiona asked.
“Yes, dear. There’s nothing wrong with per per se. When Angel created that bond with you the Powers That Be intervened the tiniest bit. Instead of just making a bond, they made you into a human/vampire crossbreed.”
“So I’m a half vampire?” Fiona asked slowly.
“Not exactly. There isn’t really a term for what you are, sweetie pie. You’re not human but you’re not a vamp either. You’re more or less stuck between the two.”
“What does that mean?” Angel asked.
“It means that if she wants to be human, she can be human. And if she wants to be a vampire she can be a vampire. All you have to do is concentrate on it and you can be whatever you want.”
“But my face changed. I didn’t will it to, it just did.” Fiona argued.
“That was just a reaction to the scent of Angel’s blood. With a little work you'll learn to control that.” Lorne explained.
“Maybe I’m being dense here, but I’m still not sure what this means.” Fiona said.
“It’s like this, kiddo. Since you were born a human, since you have been human your whole life that's what you are usually but now if you think about it hard enough, your skin will go cold, your heart will stop beating, and you won’t be able to go into the sun. For all intents and purposes you’ll be a vampire. Handy trick if you find your self about to be shot or stabbed. Then just relax, clear your head, and poof, you're completely human again.”
“That’s impossible. She has a soul and she doesn’t have a demon.” Angel s
“If it is so impossible, how did her face change into a demon’s? The Powers connected her to your demon.”
“Why didn’t I know about this sooner? I mean I’ve been around Angel when he was hurt before and nothing happened.”
“That I can’t tell you, sugar cube. I told you everything I know. Except for a few things that we need to discuss in private.” Lorne said with a knowing look.
Fiona nodded. “Ok.”
“We’ll be right back.” Lorne told Angel as he took Fiona’s h “Gi “Girl talk, you understand?”
When the vampire nodded Lorne led Fiona to one of the back rooms.
“So how long have you been in love with him?” Lorne asked.
“You know already.” Fiona murmured. “You can’t tell him, Lorne. He can never know.”
Lorne sighed. “I figured you would say something like that. My lips are sealed. Besides if anyone tells him it should be you.”
“And that’s not going to happen. The whole point of our. . .whatever it is that we have, is that love isn’t an e. Ie. I mean, you’ve read Angel a couple times and you had no idea about me. So obviously Angel doesn’t feel anything for me, emotionally.
“But he could.” Lorne persisted.
“That’s not going to happen. It CAN’T. If he, by some miracle, fell in love with me, we couldn’t be together anymore. He’d lose his soul and I will do anything to keep that from happening. I need him, Lorne. If I lost him, I couldn’t stand it. It’s stupid, I know, but he’s the only man in the world for me.” With those words she opened the door and rejoined her lover at the bar.
