An alley behind the motel
***
Xander jumped out of the way of the sparkly orb Mari sent her way then threw a wooden crate at the whitelighter using her telekinetic power and the motion of her hand. Orbing out of the way Mari appeared behind Xander and threw a sparkly ball at her back. Xander felt the little jolt of shock and sighed. “You win again.”
Mari tsked as she tossed her purple hair aside. “Not about winning or losing, it’s about you and your dodging skills. And ya know you don’t need to move your hand to get your power to work, for you that gesture could be more of a crutch then an aide.”
Xander huffed. “My dodging skills are fine, it’s the whole power using thing that is new. It’s like any new weapon I just have to get use to it. I never thought I needed to practice since it was supposed to be temporary. It’s not good to depend on something if you wont have it later on the hellmouth.”
Mari nodded. “Every time you use your telekinetic power you stand still like a stick in the mud. You make yourself a target when you just stand there, but I can understand your point. When I was a nurse I worked in a lot of third world countries and most of the time all I had were my wits and a small med kit to work with. You’re going to have to adapt Xanny, the demon after you wont hold back on you because you’re a new witch.”
“I know, I know! I’ll work it out later.” Xander said as she pulled her hair into a ponytail. “Right now I’m bushed and seriously need a break!”
Mari pursed her lips as she followed Xander to the mouth of the alley. “We should continue practicing.”
“We will. Later.”
Mari sighed. “Ok. You do look a little tired and I do need to check in . . . you should take a nap.”
“Later! Right now I would like some breakfast.” Xander lead the way to the greasy-spoon next to the motel. Xander entered the place like she owned it and shrugged off the leering looks she was getting from the truckers and wait staff. She lead Mari to a table in the back and plonked down into her seat, she shifted, popped her neck, then sat back in her seat taking up that whole side. Xander didn’t care about the rumpled clothes or the dust covering her body. Food was Xander’s only goal! Xander looked at Mari from across the diner table, the girl looked uncomfortable. “What?”
“You should take a nap before we train again.”
Xander tilted her head to the side. “Why? I feel fine, just hungry. Let’s have some breakfast and talk some more about this demon after me.”
Mari mumbled something that Xander didn’t quite get, Xan prompted her to speak up with a hand gesture. “I’m not supposed to eat on the job.”
Xander rolled her eyes. “That’s a stupid rule. You’ve been around me all day, what are you going to do, starve?”
Mari huffed then held her nose up in the air. “I’m a whitelighter! I already died. I may look small but I’m hardy, I was once a war nurse!”
“Cool, but so what! We’re going to eat and that’s that! Your boss’ can kiss my perfect jean covered ass.”
Mari shook her head. “You’re one odd person! You didn’t like me yesterday and now you’re acting all nice!”
“Well that’s just me! I’m an odd ball.” Xander smiled at their waiter as he placed two glass’ of water in front of them.
“What can I get you lovely ladies?” Said the young man in a white apron.
“Are you a cook or do you all wear chef aprons?” Xander asked as she rested her chin on her hand. Xander looked the guy up and down from his long dark hair, broad shoulders, and pleasant smile, then looked at his name tag. “I would like a number three special, Felix.”
Felix grinned brightly. “I’m a part time cook, the morning waitress called in sick. Not that I mind doing extra work, not when I get to serve such lovely ladies. How would you like your eggs and do you want bacon, ham, or sausage? And what would you like to drink, miss . . .?”
“Alex, the name is Alex. I want my eggs over easy, bacon, and some hot coco. I’m feeling like something sweet.” Xander said in a smokey voice.
Felix blushed then looked at Mari. “And you? What would you like?”
Mari smiled uncomfortably then leaned over the table to talk to Xander. “Whitelighter’s don’t have money!” Mari mumbled harshly.
Xander shrugged. “Then I guess I’m paying. Pick something, don’t make poor Felix stand here all day.” Xander winked at the young man and had to hide a smirk at the cherry red blush dusting the waiter/cook’s upper cheeks. It felt good to be the one causing blushes instead of the one blushing!
Mari frowned. “A number one, I’d like the eggs scrambled and ham and wheat toast please.”
“Anything to drink?” Felix asked as he wrote that down.
“Orange juice please.”
Xander waited for the young man to get out of hearing range then leaned toward Mari. “So tell me more about this demon and my new roll as a witch. And don’t think I didn’t notice that you ordered the cheapest thing on the breakfast menu. Are you sure you only want a slice of toast, eggs, and ham?”
Mari nodded. “I always eat lite.” Then Mari frowned. “You shouldn’t tease like that!”
Xander shrugged. “Girls do that to me! Beside Felix is cute.” Xander wanted to freak at the sentence that just came out of her mouth but held it in. Xander needed to be open minded, there is no room for a river of denial right now. ‘So Felix is cute . . . I had sex with Chris . . . I’m still attracted to girls . . . so I’m bi?’
Mari bit at her lip. “I don’t know a lot about Bob, but I will share all I do know. He’s a mind master and used to be a witch till he went bad. As a witch he could control emotions, minds, and the physical health of the human body. Before he turned demon he was a witch healer named Sigmund Riverton . . . I don’t know his demon name or the powers he has but I do know he twisted his witch abilities into something very sick . . . I also know he’s your great-great-great-great uncle! It was his own family destined to stop him so he stopped them first! You should have been taught this stuff long ago from your Book of Shadows, do you have it?”
Xander shrugged and was going to ask about the book when Felix the waiter/cook headed to their table with two plates of food. “Here you go ladies I hope you enjoy your meal. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me, just give a holler, k?”
Xander nodded and gave the young man a tight but sweet smile. “Now what book are you talking about? I don’t have a book by that name?”
Mari frowned as she nibbled on the corner of her toast. “That’s weird you should have got it the moment you got your powers . . . it should have appeared before you.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re the last Riverton witch!”
Xander shrugged as she cut enthusiastically into her pancakes. “You said I’m related to the demon Sigmund, maybe he has it?”
“No he can’t touch it, the River Book of Shadows is a symbol of good. Demons and warlocks can’t open it, it’s just a plain book to them! It must be block somehow.” Mari shook her head, that was just something else for her to worry about.
“Can’t I summon it?” Xander asked around a big bite of bacon and eggs.
Mari gave a slow slightly unsure nod. “I think so but you’ll have to write a spell to do it.”
“Great!” Xander pulled out a small pad of paper and a pen and started writing. “The rivers are flowing and so is my magic, send me my families book of magic before my power does something tragic, appear before me the River Book of Shadows.” Xander held her hands open using her written spell and her power to will the book into her hands. Above their heads a small portal opened and a dark brown and red leather book fell out of the sky and into Xander’s hands. It looked like a plain book with a silver river picture on the cover.
“You can’t DO that out in the open!! Mortals will see!” Mari hissed her eyes big with alarm.
Xander raised a brow then looked around, the truckers at the front were munching away at their food, and no one in the kitchen could get a good look at their corner table. “I think we’re safe.”
“Yeah until whoever had the book finds it missing . . .”
“So let’s see what’s in this book before I come to my senses and start running away from you again!” Xander said brightly as she flipped the book open to the first page.

Gideon frowned. He could feel some powerful magic race through the school and into the room of family magic books. Walking quickly Gideon search the rows of old dust covered and forgotten books and found a special one missing. The River Book of Shadows. “Very interesting.”
Gideon orbed to the other Elders, he needed to inform them that the book had been reclaimed.
