Chapter Four
Buffy walked down the sidewalk crying, not paying any attention to where she was walking when she heard yelling, screaming and fighting. As she looked up, she realized she had made her way over to Xander's house. Suddenly the idea from before re-formed in her head. She wouldn't have to stop Xander at all… she would let someone else do it for her.
Walking up to the door, she pounded on it as hard as she could without breaking it with her slayer strength. When it finally opened, there stood the grossest adult she had ever seen. Beer, food and god knew what else was staining the man’s clothes … and was that blood? He had a bottle of Jack something, she couldn't quite make out the label, and his breath, even from where she was standing, was putrid.
"Ya, what do you want? I ain't got all night," Tony Harris grumbled, looking her up and down. "Unless you want to stay all night, that is."
Trying not to shudder or throw up, Buffy was able to stutter out, "N-N-No, I'mmm here to tell you to tell Xander to leave my boyfriend, Angel, alone. He's mine, not his. He needs to get his own boyfriend and stop trying to steal mine."
The change in the man was almost instantaneous. Tony threw the bottle down and it exploded with untold force, and he roared his anger into the night sky.
"You mean to tell me that with all my teaching and talks to that boy he still turned out to be a fag? Well, when he comes home, he’ll wish he never looked at your boyfriend, missy. You won't have to worry about him after tonight. That I promise you. Now go on and get out of here before he sees you and you ruin everything. Go on, get."
As Buffy ran away from Xander’s house she started to feel a little guilty … but only a little. She wanted Angel all to herself, so if it meant that Xander suffered, then she was all for it, as long as she got what she wanted in the end.
The Scoobies had closed up their research about one in the morning; a normal night for them. They had decided to have a fresh look at things in the morning. Angel said he would be over as soon as the wine was delivered.
Xander had walked Willow home and he was hoping that, by the time he got home, both parental units would be passed out. This night he was out of luck.
As soon as he unlocked the front door, it was grabbed out of his hand, throwing him off balance. Then something hit the back of his head. Oh god, it's going to be one of those nights, he thought, as he landed on his knees. Now what has triggered this, he wondered as he tried to rise to get away. But then a foot caught him in the stomach, knocking the wind out of him, and he fell flat on the floor, face first. He was rolled over, still trying to catch his breath, and he looked up into his father’s mostly sober face.
"What is this I hear about you trying to steal some girl's boyfriend? How many times did I tell you what that makes you? And what happens if you become that in this family? Hmmm? Aww, can't answer can we? Tough. By the time I'm done with you, you will wish you had never even heard of this Angel guy."
He then grabbed Xander and dragged him down to the basement. Before they hit the top step Xander was already trying to scream for help.
A few hours later a figure dumped a body unceremoniously on the front porch. "You have until end of the week to get your stuff out of here or I'll throw it all away." Then the figure turned and slammed the door on its way back in.
The body just lay there, crying in a voice that had long gone hoarse from screaming. It tried to move, but that brought on moans of pain. It knew it had to get up and find shelter before the creatures of the night found it and finished what the figure started.
Reaching the edge of the steps, it leaned a little too far forward, over balanced, and fell down the steps, landing hard on the ground at the bottom. In it's weakened state it didn't have the strength to stop the fall.
It knew where it had to go in order to be safe, so it turned left and stumbled to the sidewalk. Going from one lamppost to the next, he moved slowly, resting catching his breath and telling himself just one more lamppost to go. Many times he fell down and had to crawl to the next lamppost, crying and scratching his way back up to his feet, so that he could try to make it to the next one despite his many injuries.
Finally, after two hours of this he spied his goal. He made it to the gate, but there was nothing he could hang on to in order to get from the gate to the front door. As the reality of the situation hit him, he fell down at the gate and began to cry. He simply didn’t have it in him to go on; it was too far and his injured body had given too much already. There was nothing left to give.
Just then he heard a low voice. "Well, look what I have found. A bite before I sleep … Shit kid, are you even alive under all that?" asked the vampire.
He turned his head painfully and looked up at the vampire. Then he just laughed; this is fucking great, making it all this way just to get killed by a vampire…
"Don't worry, I don't think you have enough in you to make a mouthful anyway. You’re trying for the front door, I guess," the vampire said.
Xander just nodded his head.
"Okay, this might hurt like hell, but I'll get you there. Just hold on," the vampire said as he picked him up and cradled his body gently.
He was so glad the vampire picked him up; the pressure on his back and ass was gone and it felt wonderful. He watched as the vampire carried him over to the front door, set him down on his feet, which caused moans of pain to be heard from him, and pounded on the door.
After the fourth pound, Angel answered the door, still in his pajamas. As soon as he saw who was at the door and saw what he had, Angel immediately went into game face and was about to attack, when Xander said, "NO, please … he saved me. He helped me get here. Please, I need to get inside and he needs to get home before sunrise. Please Angel, I need help and you’re it."
Still in game face, Angel invited the vampire in. The vampire then swung Xander back up into his arms and followed Angel over to one of the couches, where he gently laid the human down. Once he was safely on the couch, Xander finally gave into the pain and passed out.
All of sudden Angel grabbed the vampire and pushed him into the wall, hard, leaving an imprint of cracks. "Talk! Tell me what happened to him."
The other vampire went into game face as well. "I don't know. I was walking up the street and saw his body in the shadows. I was thinking of having a late night snack before I turned in, but that was before I stepped into the light. I mean, I'm a vampire and all, but look at what was done to that kid. That's just barbaric. From the blood trail, I could see he was trying to get to your door, so I offered to carry him. Then we pounded on your door until you answered and you know the rest. Honest. I had nothing to do with it."
"If I ever find out you had anything to do with his condition…"
"Ya ya, listen Angel, we all know who you are and what you use to be so don't go with the threats, okay. You might still be able to do it but you’d rather dust than torture now-a-days anyway."
"Listen, for him, I'd let Angelus loose for the day. Now, get out of my house."
"Actually, that is something I wanted to talk to you about. If I promise to behave and all, could I stay and help the kid? He kinda struck a chord, you know. It looks like he dragged himself a pretty good distance before he collapsed at your gate. You gotta admire grit like that. I mean, if it means I bag it, I will. And I can pay my own way; I have a trust fund my parents set up before they died that I still use."
After looking at the vampire and knowing that it was wise to keep a lid on this, he reluctantly agreed. "By the way, what is your name?"
"Just call me Vic," the vamp grinned.
"Now lets get him cleaned up while he is still out," Angel said.
"Fine. You start topside and I’ll work from the feet up. I think it’d be best if we also keep track of his injuries. Kid looks like he is still in school. We might have to report this to the authorities."
"Good idea," Angel said, getting pens and paper.
After they gathered first aid and cleansing supplies, they started cleaning and stitching up what remained of Xander.
