Cap and Gown
Cap and Gown
The gowns for Graduation were the most ugly color of maroon Xander had ever seen. They were the color of dried blood, sort of, and Xander couldn’t help but wonder if the colors for Sunnydale High had been chosen back in the fifties with this day in mind.
The thought that the Mayor had planned on eating an entire generation of kids even before they were born gave Xander the heebie jeebies. Then again he was getting familiar with the feeling of impending doom. After all he was the key guy.
At first he felt proud, from zeppo to important in three easy steps. Then he realized, not everyone was going to live. People that he knew and went to school with every day were going to die.
And he’d be left to deal with the guilt. Unless he died too.
Xander found himself wishing that he lived somewhere normal. Where he only had to worry about drug dealers and school shootings and failing chemistry. But then there were always monsters, human and demon. With his luck he could live in the middle of nowhere and still get mugged by the only bad guy in the state.
“You ready?” Angel was behind him suddenly but Xander didn’t jump. He just seemed to know when the other man was there. He’d freak out about it if he had any extra brain cells available, but he didn’t right now.
Xander looked down at himself. He had a sword strapped to him along with a small ax, stakes and other weapons. The entire senior class had pretty much the same accessories. At least the ugly maroon robes would hide all the weapons. “Pretty much. I’m armed to the tooth, and yet I’m so scared my teeth are chattering. Sounds like I’m ready for yet another apocalypse.”
“Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”
Xander turned to look at his friend. So much had happened in such a short time but one thing he knew for certain. “I’m going to miss you, I just want you to know that.”
Angel gave one of his half-smiles. “It’s not like I’m going to be far away. L.A. is two hours, not a half a continent. Believe me, it was harder to keep in touch with people a hundred years ago.”
Xander tried to laugh. “Yeah, and I bet the price for feeding the horses wasn’t nearly as bad as gas for that damn convertible of yours.”
“That’s true.” They both just stood there, looking at each other, until Angel looked at the clock. “Guess it’s time to go.”
“Yeah.” Xander took a deep breath and held out his hand. “No matter what happens Angel, I’m glad I got to know the real you. There isn’t anyone I wouldn’t rather have watching my back.”
“Same here.” And they shook hands. As he left for his position at Graduation, Xander wondered why for just a moment, he had the urge to throw his arms around Angel and never let go.
