The week after Buffy nearly got him killed had been horrible for Xander, Spike had brought him literally to his knees and there’d been nothing erotic or fun about having to ask Spike’s permission for every little thing he did. It wasn’t as though Spike had once said no, in fact he’d been so agreeable that Xander thought he could have asked for a trip to the moon, and Spike would have tried to figure out a way to get him one. On the one hand Spike was pandering to his every whim, on the other, Xander had to express those whims on his knees and couldn’t so much as take a piss without checking in with Spike first.

The restrictions fuelled Xander’s insecurities and he started to wonder if this was what Spike truly wanted. The vampire had always said that he loved Xander just as he was, but now Xander started to think that maybe his lover wanted this Xander, a mindless, obedient slave, and not the stubborn, mouthy and rebellious brat that was Xander’s usual self.

He knew that Spike was trying to teach him something, but he had no clue what it was; and every day he got a little more resentful and a lot more worried. It wasn’t as though he would ever leave Spike; Xander knew that even if he did have to spend the rest of his life naked and chained, he would. He just wished he could figure out what Spike wanted him to learn.

The second week was no better, Spike was loving and tender with him, spending hours trying to reassure Xander of his love; but still he wouldn’t relax his harsh restrictions. Every single time that Xander had to go to Spike and ask permission just to do something as simple as getting a drink he became a little angrier. Spike had told him he’d know when it was time for the punishment to be over, that he’d understand why Spike was doing this.

Xander didn’t understand, he knew that he’d screwed up, knew that he had to be punished; what he didn’t know was why Spike thought this would change anything. If his lover gave him an order, Xander would obey it, he’d never refused Spike anything, so why couldn’t the vampire just let this go.

On the third week, spike relaxed a few of the rules, allowing Xander to go out and get on with his work; but at home things went on the same.

On Monday Xander visited one of the shops he supplied with furniture and made arrangements to work on a few new pieces. When he left it was dark, and even though their apartment was only a few blocks away, Xander called a cab; because he knew Spike hated him being out alone at night.

On Tuesday Xander spent the day working on his new orders, grateful to have something to do to distract him from his ongoing troubles. He took a break at 11 o’clock and went to find Spike, because he knew how much the vampire liked it when Xander would sit and watch Passions with him.

On Wednesday Spike went out all day, leaving Xander alone, but it never even occurred to him to break the rules, he still adhered to all Spike’s restrictions, even though the vampire would never know if he broke them.

On Thursday he wound up in the supermarket, picking up a week’s supplies.
He got plenty of fresh fruit and veg because Spike was sick of him eating junk food, the vampire wanted Xander to be healthy. He avoided any cleaning products that were heavily scented, as he knew the smells drove Spike mad and he stocked up on the vampire’s favourite treats.

He wound up standing in the toiletries aisle debating over which body wash to buy. The first one had a scent that Spike preferred, but the second had relaxants, which helped ease Xander’s back when he’d been working all day. He remembered Spike telling him that he was happy to put up with the smell if it made Xander feel better, so he tossed his favourite into the basket, confident that Spike wouldn’t mind.

He headed for the till, happy that he’d got everything they needed, but ended up stopping dead in his tracks as he thought about what he’d just done. As suddenly as that, Xander got it. Finally understood what Spike had been trying to teach him. He didn’t want to control every aspect of Xander’s life, he just wanted his lover to stop and think before he did things, to remember that Spike had a say in his life, that anything Xander did had consequences for both of them. Spike didn’t expect Xander to give up thinking for himself; he’d just wanted Xander to remember he was Spike’s before he made decisions.

Abandoning his basket, Xander headed for home, running all the way. He started stripping down the second he was through the door, flinging his clothes everywhere in his haste to get to Spike. Kneeling at his Master’s feet, Xander tried to find the right way to explain that he finally understood, but the words wouldn’t come.

They didn’t have to, Spike took one look at his boy kneeling at his feet and he knew that it was finally done. Xander’s face was full of joy instead of the misery he’d shown over the course of his punishment. Even better he smelled like himself again, the bitter reek of pain and insecurity replaced with peace and contentment.

Spike pulled Xander into his arms and held on tight, he buried his face in the crook of Xander’s neck and just basked in the love he could feel pouring off his boy. He’d hated the last few weeks almost as much as Xander had; watching his pet fall deeper into despair had almost broken his heart. But he’d had to do it, the thought of losing Xander terrified him, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to keep his boy safe.

He’d known words wouldn’t cut it, he could tell Xander what to do, how to behave, but until Xander felt it in his very bones he wouldn’t truly be Spike’s, now he was. The kiss Spike laid against Xander’s lips was almost chaste, but it held all of his love. He knew that they still had to talk this out, put words to what they both now understood. But for now things were good, they could get back to their regular life, the one where Xander was just as likely to snark at Spike as call him Master, both of them now secure in the fact that Xander was entirely Spike’s.

Now perhaps, Spike could even bring up the subject of mating again. He hadn’t wanted to push Xander about it whilst the boy had been feeling so wretched, but now that awful time was over; and Spike could finally find out if Xander would be willing to bind himself to Spike forever. Holding his beloved pet tight against his chest, Spike dreamed of the future he hoped they could have.
