Act Four
Fade In:
The street, near the abandoned Building
Faith and Buffy walked side by side down the street after having their breakfast. Faith was rubbing her stomach and her eyes were knitted together in discomfort.
“Want me to roll you down the street, F?” Buffy snickered.
“Shut up.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t have eaten so much,” Buffy taunted and smiled at her innocently.
“I said shut up.” Faith glared at her.
Buffy poked her stomach and Faith slapped her hand away, “I mean it B, touch me again and I’ll deck you.”
Buffy just laughed at her but then stopped as she heard yelling. She looked to her right at the abandoned building and then back at Faith. Faith didn’t even stop and consider the options, she just walked right in.
Sam and Tony were arguing.
“She’s gonna die if we don’t get her to the hospital! She hasn’t woken up in almost a day!” Sam yelled, pointing at Jess.
“We cant go to the hospital and you KNOW that! If we go there going to find out who she is, and then call her parents. If her dad finds her then she’s dead anyway! The stupid bastard will probably come with a fucking gun!”
“Sam?” Buffy asked.
“Buffy, Faith... what are you guys doing here, I said I’d find you.” Sam shifted from foot to foot uncomfortably.
“We heard yelling,” Faith offered. She looked at the girl on the floor and walked over to her, crouching down next to her. She put two fingers on her pulse, “Its weak.” She looked at her arms, they had track marks all up them. “And if she’s on shit right now, that doesn’t give her the best odds. Ya gotta bring her to a hospital.”
“No!” Tony yelled. “He’ll kill her anyway, I wont let her die that way!”
“She’ll die THIS way if we don’t!” Sam yelled back.
“Look, kid,” Faith addressed Tony. “I know how this shit works, alright? I’ve been where you are, I’ve been where she is. And she WILL die if she doesn’t go there. Are you ready to lose her?”
“I...” Tony trailed off, he didn’t have an answer to that.
“Come on, we’ll giver her a different name to check her in with,” Faith said and picked up the girl, cradling her in her arms. “How far is it to the hospital?”
Cut to:
Emergency room
“This girl needs help, now!” Faith said as she ran into the emergency room, carrying Jess.
The woman at the desk called a doctor and asked, “What’s her name?”
“Jennifer Thompson,” Faith said as she handed her over to the doctors that gathered around her. They put her on a stretcher and one asked, “What happened?”
“O.D. Heroin.”
“How long as she been out?”
Faith looked to Sam and Tony. Sam spoke up, “Almost a day.”
The doctor turned and yelled orders at the others and they took her away. He turned back to them, “We’ll do all we can. The waiting rooms over there, you’ll be the first to know if anything changes.” He pointed to the waiting room a couple doors down.
“Faith, can I talk to you?” Buffy said as she took Faith’s arm and led her to the side. She turned to Sam and Tony, “You guys go wait in the waiting room, we’ll be there in a sec.”
The two nodded and turned away, leaving the two Slayers alone. Buffy looked Faith in the eyes, “Faith, what did you mean when you said you were in her place once? Be honest, please.” Buffy pleased with her with her eyes. She wanted to get to know Faith and she could never do that because she never talked about her past.
“Just what I said, B.” Faith replied and shook her arm out of Buffy’s grip.
“You were into drugs?”
“Yeah,” was all Faith offered in response and looked away from her uncomfortably. Her eyes looked around the hospital, looking everywhere but Buffy.
“Not anymore, right?” Buffy asked fearfully. She was worried that Faith could end up like Jess.
“No. Not anymore.” She still didn’t look at Buffy, and pretended to find a picture on the wall utterly fascinating.
“Was it bad?” Buffy asked gently.
“Overdosed, didn’t die cause I was a slayer and my metabolism was faster. Checked myself into rehab cause my watcher suggested it. Got clean, end of story.” Faith looked at Buffy after she stopped talking.
“I’m proud of you,” Buffy said softly, honestly.
Faith looked taken aback by that and just stared at her.
“Faith, I’ve never done drugs. Well, I smoked some weed once when I lived in LA, but I never got into it. But I had this friend when I was there, and she did a lot of coke. I was with her throughout the whole time she was trying to stop. I know its hard, but I know I cant relate cause I’ve never been through it. But I am proud of you.” Buffy grabbed a hold of Faith’s hand and laced their fingers together. She smiled at her.
Faith had nothing to do but smile back, a small one. “Thanks B, but its really nothing to be proud of. Shouldn’t have started in the first place, ya know?” Faith shrugged it off and looked away again.
Buffy ran her thumb over the backside of Faith’s hand. “Faith... Faith look at me.” Faith turned her head towards her slowly and they locked eyes. “I want to get to know you, and I know that might sound funny considering our past but... I wanna be your friend. You’re like no one I’ve ever met, and your probably the only one who knows the REAL burden of being a Slayer. But I cant know you, if you wont open up. I know you’ve been hurt, I know you’ve had a rough life, but I don’t know much more than that. I want you to trust me, if not now then someday. I want you to trust me enough at some point to let me in, and to have a real friend.”
Faith looked down at the ground for a long time, seemingly trying to figure out a response to that. She looked up. “Buffy I...” She paused. “I just don’t think I can. You don’t... understand how hard its been, and how harder it’d be to talk about it.”
“You don’t have to be ready now, I’m not asking you to do it now, or anytime soon for that matter. Just, someday.”
Faith nodded a little and Buffy squeezed her hand before letting go. “Thanks.”
Cut to:
Waiting room - later
Buffy, Faith, Sam and Tony were all sitting in the waiting room. Buffy was reading a magazine and Faith was picking at her nails. Sam had fallen asleep on Tony’s shoulder but when the doctor came in he shook her awake.
The doctor had a solemn look on his face. “I’m sorry,” he said. “We did all that was could. She didn’t make it, her heart failed.”
Sam started crying and Tony took her in her arms. Buffy looked at Faith and sighed sadly before looking at the doctor, “Thank you.” He nodded and walked off.
“I told you!” Sam wailed as she punched the wall, making a huge dent in it, “I told you she would die! We should’ve brought her here sooner. I fucking hate this world!” She put her head in her hands and sobbed some more.
Buffy got up and crossed the waiting room, kneeling down in front of Sam. “I’m sorry,” she said.
“Well sorry isn’t going to bring her back,” Sam mumbled as she wiped at her tears.
“I know that. I’ve lost friends before, I’ve lost my mother too. I know sorry doesn’t bring her back, or make it better.” Sam just sniffed and looked down. “Come on, lets get out of here. Do you wanna come back to the Marriott with us? Both you and Tony?”
Sam looked up, “Both of us?”
“Yeah,” Faith agreed, “The streets is no good for anyone. You guys need a warm bed.”
Sam looked at Tony and he shrugged, “Sure, sounds nice.”
Cut to:
Marriot hotel hallway
“There’s your room,” Buffy pointed at room 315 and handed them their room cards. Me and Faith are just down the hall, room 321. Knock if you need anything.”
Sam nodded and took the card, sliding it in the door. They both walked in without a word and closed the door behind them.
Faith sighed, “Poor kids.”
“Yeah,” Buffy agreed. “Its hard to lose someone.”
Faith nodded and they walked to their room. Buffy opened the door and they both walked in and Faith crossed the room to sit on her bed. “I wanna do something for her, but I don’t know what to do.”
Buffy sat across for her, on her bed. “Well, maybe we could start some training, keep her mind off of it? She can beat out her anger too.”
“Yeah, sounds like a good plan. When’s everybody coming again?”
“I’m not sure. Soon? I hope its soon cause we need that house.” Buffy answered.
“I hope this is worth it,” Faith said as she laid back on the bed.
“What do you mean?”
“I just hope we don’t end up doing this for nothing. For people to reject the idea of being a Slayer.”
“I don’t think they will, or at least I don’t think most will. People like feeling important, and like they have a place in life.” Buffy said and laid back as well.
“Yeah, I guess. I just REALLY hope this all doesn’t go to shit....”
