Chapter 65

Angel’s apartment - later the same night

*******************

Where the bleedin’ hell had Angel got to?

As Spike paced back and forth in the office, he cursed himself for letting Angel drive Doyle and Cordelia home. For fuck’s sake, why couldn’t he have just put ’em both in a cab? Wasn’t like either of them had come to any harm first time round. They weren’t the ones at risk… not tonight, anyway.

Bugger! Next time he’d insist on going with him.

If there was a next time.

What if he’d stopped to help some damsel in distress on the way home?

No, he’d be okay, Spike tried to tell himself. It was a traffic accident that killed him yesterday and, besides, he was human then. All the same, the pillock wouldn’t stop to think of the consequences. If someone was in trouble he’d jump right in…

Angel turned the key in the lock and let himself in.

“Angel!” he heard Spike yell.

Before he could even respond, Angel found his arms were full of his erstwhile lover.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, pulling Spike close and running his hands over his back. It felt good to hold him.

Spike clung tightly to him for a moment, his head bowed.

“Where the fuck were you?” Spike asked, relaxing his grip somewhat and looking up. His eyes were full of tears. “You’ve been gone nearly an hour. I’ve been worried sick.”

Angel hadn’t stopped to think. He’d only been to Cordy’s place. It wasn’t like he’d even been following up one of Doyle’s visions.

“I’m sorry. I stopped at the drug store to get some pain killers and other stuff I thought Wesley might need. I didn’t think…”

He glanced at his watch.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise how long… The first two I tried were closed…”

Spike suddenly let go and seemed to pull himself together.

“Sorry,” he mumbled. “Guess I overreacted, Luv.”

“It’s okay,” Angel whispered, pulling Spike back into his arms once more. “I like it that you worry about me.”

“Yeah, well, don’t start liking it too much, eh?”

Angel hadn’t even noticed his body was starting to respond to Spike’s touch. Spike had though. He gave him one last hug and stepped away. Angel reached into his pocket to retrieve the things he’d bought for Wesley.

“Thanks, Pet. I’m sure he appreciate these in the morning.”

“You don’t want to give them to him now? I thought he had a cracked rib…”

“Oh, he does but he was out like a light as soon as his head hit the pillow. I’m surprised he didn’t fall asleep in the shower…”

“You were spying on him?”

“Nah, course not. Just keeping an ear cocked for the sound of a dead weight slumping to the floor. Told him he should have just got straight into bed but he insisted on a shower. He’s as bad as you… no, worse… when it comes to matters of personal hygiene.”

Angel laughed at Spike’s attempt to mimic Wesley’s accent.

“I’m glad he’s all right,” Angel said.

“I didn’t say that…”

“But, I thought…”

“Oh, he’ll heal physically given a few days rest,” Spike said. “Wouldn’t hurt to use some of yer winnings to get him checked out by a doctor though.”

“Yes, you’re right. We should...”

“Not so sure about his mental state though. He’s been through a lot what with the whole business with Holtz and then losing Fred and now Illyria. Course, we might be able to do something about the latter…”

“What do you mean?”

“We could go and rescue Fred.”

“You mean from… where was it? Pylea?”

Spike nodded.

“But… how would we get there?”

“I have no idea, Luv. Summat to do with portals. You didn’t go into detail but Wes would know. He was there too and, don’t forget, it’s where Lorne used to live. I’m sure he could help.”

“Okay, we’ll go and talk to Lorne and see what he can tell us…”

“Best not say anything to Wesley just yet. Give him a chance to get back to full strength.”

“We’ll get him an appointment with a doctor tomorrow…”

“Preferably not one whose parts detach, eh?”

Angel laughed.

“And make sure he knows his stuff. You can afford a good one…”

“It’s your money.”

“No it isn’t, Pet. I’ve given it to you. I’m just sorry it’s not enough to buy that bleedin’ hotel…”

Spike lowered his gaze.

“I’m sorry, Angel. I really wanted to do this for you… for us…”

“I know, Sweetheart,” Angel replied, wrapping his arms around Spike one more. “Thank you.”

As Spike looked up at him, Angel had an almost overwhelming urge to kiss the beautiful creature in his arms but he knew he had to resist.

“Maybe we should say goodnight,” he mumbled, releasing Spike. “Remember what Lorne said: one kiss and I’m history.”

“Yeah, guess you’re right.”

“Oh, there’s something I forgot to mention,” Angel began. “I made an appointment for us to view the Hyperion tomorrow afternoon. It seems no one wants the lease on account of the hotel being haunted…”

Spike laughed.

“Ever thought of renaming this agency ‘Ghostbusters’, Luv?”
