Chapter 5

Central Perk
Chapter 5

“Joyce Summers”

Buffy inhaled nervously, her mother answered her cell phone on the 2nd ring. She had hoped that maybe Joyce had been in one of her Monday morning meetings and she could just leave her a message to let her know where she was and more importantly that she was okay. No such luck.

“Hello. Buffy? Buffy is that you?”

“Yeah, mom it’s me.” Buffplieplied, her voice quivering.

“Buffy!” Joyce exclaimed, relief evident in her tone. “Honey where are you? We’ve been worried sick about you. Why haven’t you cal…”

“Mom,” Buffy interrupted her mothers barrage of questions, “I’m fine. I’m staying with a friend.”

“Sweetie, your father is furious.” Joyce whispered into the phone. “He went to your loft yesterday and he said that all of your furniture is still there but all of your clothes are gone and your luggage, and Buwe dwe didn’t know what to think.”

“I know mom. I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to worry you or dad…”

“Honey where are you?” Joyce interrupted.

Buffy took a deep breath before she answered, “here we go,” she thought to herself. “I’m at Willow’s”

She heard Joyce sigh in relief, “Thank God! You’re staying at the Rosenbergs. We had no idea where…”

“No mom,” Buffy interrupted, “I’m not at the Rosenberg’s. I’m staying at Willow’s, as in Willow’s apartment.”

“When did Willow move back to Sunnydale?”

“She didn’t mom,” Buffy answered and then closed her eyes in preparation for the freak out that was about to ensue.

“Buffy, do you mean to tell me that when you say that you “needed to get a way,” that entailed getting on an air plane and flying all the way across the country to New York.” The volume in Joyce’s voice continued to rise until she was finally yelling, putting a hostile emphasis on her daughter’s location. “Buffy, what were you thinking?”

“I told you mom,” Buffy replied, trying to remain calm. “I ed ted to get away. I don’t think I need to tell you that things have been a little tense around there lately. I needed a break.”

“If you want a break Buffy, you take a break, you don’t run away all the way across the country.” Joyce scolded her daughter harshly. “Buffy your father is going to lose it.”

“Shocker there,” Buffy said sullenly rolling her eyes.

“Don’t take that tone with me young la…”

“No mother,” Buffy interrupted, “I’ve earned every bit of this tone.” Buffy took a deep breath, while she tried to contain the emotion in her voice. “Do you think I’m stupid? Do you think that I haven’t seen what’s been going on the past couple of months? You and dad are imploding and you were taking me with you.”

“Don’t you dare turn this around on us!” Joyce exclaimed. “Buffy this is by far the most irresponsible thing that you’ve ever…”

“You know what mom? The only reason I called was to let you know where I was, and that I was safe. I’ve done that. I think that we’re both a little too emotional to have this conversation right now. I’ll call you later.” With that, Buffy closed her cell phone hanging up on her mother. ‘Well, that went well.’ She thought as she laid the phone carefully on the coffee table, willing herself not to cry. “Got to keep busy Buffy,” she told herself as she combed her hands through her hair. “You know you did the right thing.” She could feel the onset of tears and decided to ta sho shower and start her day. She turned around to head into the bathroom. When she did she saw him standing in the doorway, a look of concern marring his features. She forced a weak smile, and a barely whispered “Hey.”

“Didn’t mean to eavesdrop pet,” Spike said putting his hands in his pockets to keep from fidgeting nervously. “I left my lighter here this morning so I came back over to get it. I have a key to the place so I don’t usually knock. Not used to anyone but Red living here.”

Buffy nodded and picked up his lighter from the coffee table, “Here you go.” She walked over to him with offering it to him.

Spike could see the sadness in her face, “You okay luv?”

Buffy only meant to shake her head no in response. When she looked up into his eyes the look of caring and concern she saw there overwhelmed her and the tears came. She broke down into heart wrenching sobs, covering her face in her hands, and dropping the lighter at Spikes feet.

He reached out to her quickly, his right arm going around her waist, his hand coming to rest on the small of her back, pulling her to him. He rested his left hand on the back of her head. He followed her, as she lost the ability to stand through the weight of her emotion, his arms never leaving her. “Shh luv, it’s okay, Spike’s got you. It’s going to be okay,” Spike gently whispered. He slowly began to rock her back and forth as he placed light kisses to the top of her continually murmuring words of comfort.
