Chapter 106

The village - same time, same place

**************

It was as if time stood still as Spike flew to Angel’s side. He’d expected to lose him eventually but not like this… not in some tragic accident. For that’s what this was, wasn’t it? Angel wasn’t evil. Spike knew that, even if no one else seemed to. But how could they not know? How could Wesley not know, after everything they’d been through together? And what was with Wesley? He’d always been so cautious in the past, so thorough. He’d never shoot without reason. Or, at any rate, he hadn’t used to.

Angel’s body slowly collapsed to the ground as Spike watched in horrified fascination. Angel had been right, this was the end. How had he known? Had Lorne seen this? Why hadn’t he said anything? Why hadn’t he tried to stop Wesley?

Spike knew he’d never hold his sire in his arms again, never kiss his lover, never again make love to the man of his dreams… the man who gave meaning to his very existence…

Angel was within reach now. If he could just touch him… one last time…

Spike had been expecting to see Angel disappear in a cloud of dust at any moment.

He didn’t.

Spike fell to his knees beside Angel’s body.

Angel was out cold.

He was out cold! He was still alive - in a manner of speaking. He wasn’t dust. He wasn’t dead - well, he was, but not ‘dead’ dead. He was still here… still among the living.

Spike breathed an enormous sigh of relief.

“What the fuck did yer do that for?” he yelled at Wesley. “Angel! Come on, Luv, wake up!”

A bullet shouldn’t have rendered him unconscious, not unless he’d taken it in the head.

“Hold your fire, Wes!” Lorne cried. “It’s okay. He isn’t evil. I’m sure of it.”

Spike checked Angel’s head for signs of impact.

Nothing.

“Please, speak to me, Luv.”

“I’m sorry,” Wesley said. “The song… When I heard the words, it all came back to me…”

Wesley’s legs gave way under him and he sank to the ground.

“You’re gonna be all right, Luv. Seems the Watcher isn’t such a good shot after all!”

There was a hole in Angel’s shirt. Spike tore it open to get a better look at the damage.

Bleedin’ Hell, Wesley hadn’t missed!

“I don’t understand,” Fred said, coming to kneel beside Wesley. “What happened? Why did you fire if he’s not evil?”

There, exactly above his heart was a tranquilliser dart! Spike pulled it out and took a closer look at the wound. Should heal within minutes.

“It’s a long story, Poppet,” Lorne said, placing his hand on Wesley’s shoulder.

Spike bent his head to tend the wound with his tongue.

“Remember what I told you about the Beast? There were a few details I neglected to mention, Pumpkin.”

“What the fuck yer got against the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Wes?” Spike asked, sitting up to stare at Wesley.

“It wasn’t your fault, Wes…” Lorne continued.

“But I could have killed him,” Wesley sobbed.

“Not with a tranquilliser dart, Sweetie.”

“He will be all right, won’t he?” Fred asked.

“Yeah, Luv. Don’t fret,” Spike said, getting to his feet.

The wound was almost healed. Course, he had no idea how long the tranquilliser would take to wear off.

“The Thesulac was right,” Wesley mumbled to himself. “I’m useless…”

At least he’d had the presence of mind to use the right gun.

“Hey!” Spike called, going over to where Wesley knelt and placing a hand on his other shoulder.

Stupid sod!

“You were just doing what you thought had to be done.”

Course, if Lorne had been a bit more careful none of this would have happened.

He patted Wesley’s shoulder.

No point crying over spilt milk though...

"You know, when the Poof wakes up, he’ll probably congratulate you on your aim…”

“I’m a liability to you all...”

“Nonsense. You know he wouldn’t have wanted you to take any chances… You did the right thing, Wes. Just gave me heart failure, is all. Next time, let me know what the fuck you’re planning…”

“But I shouldn’t have…”

“No buts. Anyhow, if you can’t do anything else, you can at least shoot straight,” Spike said.

Wesley nodded.

“That has to be an asset to… don’t make me say it, Wes… ‘Team Angel’.”

Wesley started to smile.

“That’s better, Wes. Now come on, if he doesn’t wake up soon, we’ve gotta figure out how we’re gonna get this great lump home.”
