THIS EXIT TO THE INDIANA TOLL ROAD
CHAPTER 45 – THIS EXIT TO THE INDIANA TOLL ROAD
2:50am
“You ready?”
“Ready!”
“One, two, lift!” the bigger burly man said, as the two of them lifted the man on the gurney into the delivery truck.
“Good, let’s get to Meigs Field,” said the second man.
2:53am
A severe thunderstorm had now developed in earnest. The air crackled with electricity seconds before lightening struck the hospital’s tower, sending all buildings into darkness for the few seconds it took the emergency generators to kick in.
Joe, the midnight engineer got on the radio and told all maintenance to put OUT OF ORDER signs on all the elevators.
Ralph Small walked up to the 8th floor and saw that the elevator already had a sign already posted. Figuring that one of the nurses had done so, he walked back to the stairwell and continued up to the other floors.
3:02am
“All the signs are up,” Ralph said to Joe on the radio.
“Okay, thanks, I’m turning them off.”
3:05am
Dr. Polydefkis finished stumbling around in his office, taking what he wanted, and now closed the door behind him. He patted his inner jacket pocket, and smiled as he made contact with the bulky envelope.
He carried two medium size boxes over to the elevator and pressed the button, “Waiting right here for me,” he said, having not heard the elevator come up or down, as the door opened.
He took a step and fell 9 floors to the basement, immediately dying upon breaking his neck. His body would not be found until two days later when everybody taking the elevators or anywhere in the vicinity of the elevator, noticed the terrible smell.
Lisa from the morgue was responsible for the body. After pocketing the $50,000 in cash that she happened to find in his inner jacket pocket, she took out William’s & Williams Decomposing of the Human Body and identified the state of Dr. Polydefkis’ decomposition before releasing the body to the Lake Shore Funeral Home. Nobody claimed the body and he was buried in a pauper’s grave in Cicero.
Lisa put a nice down payment on a condo for her mother in the suburbs and bought herself a nice sports car she’d always wanted.
3:05am
William sat gripping Buffy’s hand as the Bernie turned from Midway Plaisance onto Stony Island. He felt his stomach churning as the cab increased speed once it reached the Indiana Toll Road.
“How you doing?” Willow asked him.
“I think I’m going to be sick,” William said, after the first tollbooth.
Bernie stopped the car at the McDonald’s rest area and Buffy got out of the cab and helped William out. He leaned against the trunk of the car and threw up, as she held onto him.
“Maybe it would be better if he laid down,” Buffy said.
Willow nodded and got up in the front seat with Bernie and Dawn.
Buffy let William get in first and then got in, closing the door. Gently, she pulled him over onto her lap.
“Try to close your eyes and get some rest,” she said, stroking his hair, “it’s not too far.”
William nodded, closing his eyes, as he tried to fight the feeling of nausea caused by the frightening sensation of speed he’d never experienced before. Still, in spite of being overwhelmed by everything, he felt comforted lying in Elizabeth’s lap, and was soon asleep.
Leroy had seen the cab pull over and had pulled over to the side of the road to wait for them. He now put his car back into drive as he saw the cab pull out of the rest area.
“How’s he doing?” Dawn whispered after about 10 minutes, when they were just at about the East Chicago exit.
“He’s out,” she said, looking down on him.
“Poor Spike,” Dawn said.
“Yeah,” Buffy said, looking down at him with a mixture of awe and sympathy, “poor Spike.”
“So, where are we going, Bernie?”
“Leroy’s house in the Miller Beach section of Gary?”
“Gary? As in Gary Indiana, Gary Indiana?”
“Yeah, just like the music man.”
“Isn’t Michael Jackson from Gary?” asked Buffy.
“Ug!” Dawn and Willow both said.
“Hey, forget Michael Jackson, Gary used to be a very progressive town in the earlier part of the century. Well, last century. Best education system in the country. William A. Wirt developed the work-study-play model that the whole country still uses. Octave Chanute flew a glider plane off of the dunes in Gary before the Wright Brothers did at Kitty Hawk. Steel Mills made the town, but the loss of those jobs, plus a bunch of racial crap brought it down in the 70’s. Then in the 90’s, the politicians and Donald Trump thought they could bring lots of money into the city with gambling boats, but somehow, the benefits were negligible, so it’s still struggling, but it’s better.
“How do you know so much about it?” Dawn asked.
“I used to live there about 40 years ago, still have some family in the area,” Bernie replied. “Anyway, sounds like Bernie lives right on the lake.”
“Are we staying with him?” Willow asked.
“I think he’s got somewhere else in mind,” Bernie answered.
