Chapter 104

The village - same time, same place

**************

“I don’t want to swim…”

“That wasn’t what I had in mind, Luv.”

“… I just want to hold you,” Angel said, pulling Spike closer, “and kiss you.”

“Whatever you say, Pet,” Spike replied.

Angel smiled as Spike fell into his arms once more.

“I love you, Sweetheart,” he breathed.

“Thought you wanted to snog, not talk.”

“I do but…”

Angel found it impossible to complete the sentence as Spike’s tongue suddenly filled his mouth.

Angel responded enthusiastically to the kiss. He wanted to make the most of this opportunity to be with Spike. He knew in his heart of hearts it would likely be his last…

*****************

“This way, Darlings” Lorne said as they entered the village square. “They were by the stream when I last saw them.”

He started to lead them across the square toward one of the many footpaths.

“There’s a perfect spot for a romantic tryst. I’m sure they’ll have found it.”

Fred giggled.

Wesley caught her eye and smiled.

“Oh, you might not think it to look at him,” Lorne said, turning to glance over his shoulder at Fred as he continued to lead the way, “but Angel can be very romantic, or so Spike would have me believe. Apparently there was one time in Paris when…”

“I’m afraid that won’t help us to determine if he’s lost his soul,” Wesley interrupted. “I seem to recall Angelus being rather fond of elaborate romantic gestures too.”

Lorne stopped and turned around. He was frowning.

“You’ve lost me, Sweetie. I don’t seem to remember anything like that…” Lorne began.

“We had some experience of Angelus in Sunnydale,” Wesley clarified.

He didn’t really want to go into detail - not in front of Fred. He had no idea how much Lorne had told her of Angel’s background. She’d need to know sooner or later but he didn’t want to cause her any unnecessary alarm at the moment.

“Oh, I’m with you now, Wes,” Lorne said. “You mean the whole thing with the roses and candles and that poor young woman - one of Buffy’s teacher’s, wasn’t it?”

Wesley nodded. He was surprised to learn Lorne knew anything about Miss Calendar’s death.

“Angel mentioned it,” Lorne added, “when in one of his deeper, darker moods. Like there used to be any other.”

Of course, Lorne was right: there had been a time when Angel knew no other mood. How things had changed since Spike’s arrival at Wolfram and Hart. Their relationship had been good for Angel. Despite everything that had happened, Wesley had seen Angel smile more in that year than in all the time he’d known him. He silently prayed his fears about Angel losing his soul would be unfounded.

“I see,” Wesley replied.

“Wait!” Fred said as Lorne set off again. “Have either of you thought about how we’ll be able to tell whether he’s faking it? I mean, if Angel is evil again what indication will there be?”

“Good question, Poppet.”

“We have no choice,” Wesley said. “We’ll have to ask him to sing.”

He prayed the result would be more accurate than last time…

*******************

“What do you mean, ‘our last time’?” Spike asked as he reached up to touch Angel’s cheek with his fingertips.

Angel hadn’t intended to say anything about their future together, or rather their lack of one; it had just slipped out.

“You know,” he said, brightly, trying to conceal the depth of his despair, “until we can find a way to fix my soul for good.”

He sucked Spike’s finger into his mouth, swirling his tongue around it before releasing it. He hoped the distraction would be enough to discourage further questions.

“We might have to be patient…” he added.

Of course, patience never had been one of Spike’s virtues.

“Very patient…”

Spike was staring at him now, staring hard. He wondered what Spike was thinking. Two weeks ago he was in no doubt where Spike’s loyalty lay but after everything they’d shared in the last few hours, everything they’d said to one another, could he dare hope that Spike’s feelings for him had changed?

“I can wait, Pet,” Spike replied.

But why would they change? What could he possibly offer Spike that HE couldn’t?

“I don’t want to lose you, Sweetheart.”

Spike snuggled closer.

“Waited a hundred years, didn’t I?”

If only he could be certain they had another hundred years. Somehow Angel doubted they’d have even a hundred days before HE arrived. Maybe not even a hundred hours…

“I’m not going anywhere,” Spike continued.

No, but Angel was very much afraid he might be…

“I love you, Pet,” Spike breathed.

He reached up and Angel felt Spike’s fingers stroke his cheek.

“I don’t wanna lose you,” Spike added, his voice barely a whisper, “ever…”

Spike’s kiss was slow and tender. Angel never wanted it to end…

****************

“What should we do if they’re… you know… sharing an intimate moment?” Fred asked. “Won’t they be embarrassed if we go rushing in?”

She stopped suddenly, almost causing Wesley to bump into her.

“Oh, my gosh! What if they’re naked?” she added.

Wesley and Lorne both began to laugh.

Fred’s face began to colour.

Wesley had never seen her look more adorable. He wanted to sweep her into his arms and kiss her.

“Well, I wouldn’t think it was funny if I was… you know… in that situation,” she added.

“I’m sorry, Fred,” Wesley said, resisting the temptation to kiss her… for now, at least.

He slipped his free hand into hers and squeezed gently.

“We weren’t laughing at you,” he continued. “It’s just that neither Angel nor Spike have ever shown the slightest concern in the past - or, do I mean the future? - about being seen naked in public…”

“Oh,” Fred said. “You mean at Wolfram and Hart, five year’s from now?”

“Yes.”

Wesley realised he was going to have to get used to lateral thinking as far as time was concerned.

“It’s not like we haven’t seen them in flagrante delicto before, Sweetie.”

“Oh my!”
