Chapter Forty-Two – The Aftermath
Xander’s POV
I let the phone drop from my numb fingers unable to hold it any longer; I’m so relieved that Gunn and Conner are on their way. I don’t know what I would have done if nobody had answered the phone. I slide down the wall next to Angel; surely he should have woken up by now? I shiver suddenly feeling cold; I can’t help but shiver again and again. The cool, clinical part of my mind tells me that I’m in shock. I just want to fall unconscious but I can’t, if I did that would leave the three of us in a vulnerable position. What if a demon or even a mugger came along when we are all unconscious? I start to laugh at such a stupid thought, what am I supposed to do if they come around now? I hope Conner and Gunn come soon, I hope they find us; I can’t remember how clear I was with directions. I turn my head away from Angel and throw up in the garbage. Gross. Rubbing my neck I encounter something wet, bringing my hand I realise its blood, my blood, I’m bleeding. I’m still staring at my blood-covered hand when I hear a shout.
“Xander, are you down here?” calls Gunn.
“Hear,” I reply, I don’t think I was loud enough. Why is the world spinning? I slide sideways onto Angel and blackout.
*****
Gunn’s POV
“I heard something and I can smell them as well as blood. We’re in the right place,” Conner tells me. I just follow him; I have never known his nose to be wrong. We walk into the alley and I can just make out shapes halfway up. I get closer and then can’t help but speed up when I realise they are all unconscious.
“Shit, check on your father and Xander, I’ll check on Spike.” I quickly walk over to Spike who is kneeling next to a pile of dust and staring off into space.
“Spike man, can you hear me?” I wave my hand in front of his face and when he doesn’t react I take him by the shoulders and shake him. He doesn’t even blink. What the hell is going on? I slap him across the face and yet he still doesn’t move, doesn’t even flinch or change his slack-jawed expression. I quickly run my eyes over his body, checking for wounds but there is nothing. Hang on a minute; he has a stake in his hand. When Xander rang he wasn’t very clear about what was going on but he did mention Drusilla, shit, Spike staked Drusilla. Normally, I wouldn’t care, one less vamp running around is good news but Spike I think cared for her especially if you listen to the stories Willow tells.
“Gunn, Xander’s been bitten, badly. He’s passed out because of blood-loss and dad is unconscious from a head wound that I really don’t like the look of. What happened here?” Conner asks.
“Drusilla, happened,” I reply, “Do we have a jar or something in the car as well as something I can sweep her ashes up with, I think Spike and Angel will want them.”
*****
We managed to get the three unconscious bodies to the car, well when I say we I mean Conner carried them to the car and I swept up Drusilla’s ashes. Turns out Angel did have the stuff we needed in the car, must of figured it would come in handy if something ever happened to him or Spike. After pulling up to the hotel I get out to go ask everyone inside for help as I am still not one hundred percent and am supposed to be taking it easy. Conner is staying with the car just in case. Before, I get to the door I can hear music blaring out, Dani California by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I open the door and am greeted with the site of Faith, arms above her head shaking her booty in time to the song. Lorne is dancing too along with Andrew while Oz is laid up on the couch, watching.
“Guys, I need some help, we have two unconscious vampires, and an unconscious construction worker and a pile of dust, that we need help bringing inside.”
*****
Angel’s POV
Groaning, I raise my hand to my head. How many buses hit me? Then I realise that most of the pain isn’t coming from my head. I’m missing something. I feel like I’ve lost a limb. I wriggle my ten fingers and then my ten toes. No they are all still there, then what have I lost. Something’s been severed. My childer, I’ve lost one of my childer. No Drusilla. When did that happen? I try to piece together what I remember. We were in the alley, on the way to the nice, romantic Italian restaurant that some half-demons I helped out a couple of years ago run, for a celebration dinner. We were in an alley when…Drusilla…she literally dropped on us. I fought her but she somehow got the upper hand and the last thing I remember is flying backwards through the air. I must of hit my head and passed out but who staked Drusilla? I decide its time that I should open my eyes but can’t find the energy to do so. I know I’m back in my room by the smells and that my lovers are close by and someone else is in here too, Lorne.
“What happened?” I ask, I still haven’t opened my eyes I don’t want to make this headache worse.
“As far as I can tell Drusilla tried to drain Xander and Spike stopped her, permanently.” As far as he can tell? Drain Xander? Oh shit, are they all right? I brave opening my eyes and look for my lovers. I’m on my bed, in between the two. I check on Xander first because as long as Spike isn’t dust, he will be eventually fine. Humans, unfortunately, are much more fragile. I can hear Xander’s heart beat slowly but not abnormally so. Just the slow beat of someone inactive and sleeping. Someone has managed to procure a drip and blood is slowly being fed into his body. He is very pale against my dark pillows but otherwise fine. I spy a white bandage on his neck and I can’t help but growl, someone dared mark what is mine. Drusilla, it was Drusilla and Spike stopped her, Spike staked his Sire. In this instance it doesn’t matter that I took over from Drusilla in Siring and protecting Spike. Drusilla was the vampire that physically drained him and physically gave him some of her blood, her demon. That is a deep connection that nothing can stop. Her death causes pain in any childer as well as her Sire. On top of enduring the pain of her passing Spike also has to deal with the fact that he caused it. He staked his Sire, something that I vowed he wouldn’t have to go through and I couldn’t save him this anguish because I was knocked out.
“Stop that brooding, muffin. I know what your thinking your using that hair shirt to torment yourself for not being able to protect them, for being unconscious when the big fight scene went down. Well I’ve got news for you sweet cakes, that injury you sustained would of caused a human to go into a coma and even with your vampire healing its taken over twenty-four hours for you to be semi-okay.”
“Over twenty-four? How did we get back here? How did you find us?”
“Xander managed to ring Gunn before passing out and he was coherent enough to pass on your location.”
“Oh. Thanks Lorne.”
“No problem Angel-cakes, now I’m going to leave as soon as I’ve removed this from Xander and I suggest that the three of you stay up here for the next day or so. There is blood for you and Spike as well as food for Xander in the kitchen.” He quickly leaves and I sit up just staring at my two lovers thinking about how lucky I am to have them in my life or unlife whatever. My quiet reflection is interrupted by a groan from Xander. I quickly gather him into my arms and curse that I didn’t think to fix some food for him while he was unconscious. I then spy a glass of OJ on the bedside table.
“Your safe, baby. Now open your mouth and take a few sips of this for me.” He does as I ask and I think that he is still mostly asleep. After the glass is finished I put it back and just sit there rocking slightly waiting for him to wake fully.
“Angel?”
“Here Xan, I’ve got you.”
“I’m…I’m a vampire? I don’t want to be one. Stake me please and then be with Spike, the two of you look after each other once I’m gone.” It feels like my heart breaks listening to him. We came so close to losing him, I came so close to losing them both but I didn’t. I need to focus on the fact that we survived and we are all okay.
“Xander babe, your not dead, your still human, remember Spike staked her. I don’t need to stake you cos your not a vampire and your never going to be one.”
“Promise,” he sounds so insecure and little.
“I promise as long as its what you want. At some point you might decide that being a souled vampire is a reasonable enough price to being able to stay with Spike and I forever but it will be your choice a long time from now.” He slowly opens his eye and looks up at me.
“Are you okay? When you slammed back into that wall and then later when you wouldn’t wake up…I…”
“I’m fine now, it was a bad injury but with vampire healing I’m okay,” I reassure him.
“What about Spike? He just went catatonic. I couldn’t snap him out of it and I was all alone in that alley.” I feel him shiver against me.
“Shh, its okay love, you managed to ring Gunn. Spike is still out of it but I know how to get him back, we just both need to eat first because he is going to need both of us to come to terms with what happened.”
“Thankyou.”
“You have nothing to thank me for now lets go eat.”
*****
Xander’s POV
I feel much better after eating and I can tell Angel does too, he doesn’t look quite so pale and he is much steadier on his feet. I just keep touching him making sure that he is still here, that he is real. I feel stupid having to reassure myself all the time and its not very manly but I can’t help it. We make our way back to Spike and he hasn’t moved, he just lays there, eyes unseeing and I don’t know how I can help him. I feel a little guilty because he killed Drusilla for me. Climbing onto the bed beside his still figure I watch as Angel sets up some blood on the bedside table and then sets up Spike on top of him. He looks over at me and his quiet words stop my breath.
“I love you Xan and I love him so lets get him back.” I want to tell him that I love him too but my throat is dry and the words just won’t form and be vocalised. I watch as he changes into his other face and bites down on his own wrist. The now bloodied wrist is then placed in Spike’s mouth as he strokes Spike’s jugular encouraging him to drink.
“Come on Will. Come back to us. Your lovers need you.”
