Chapter 102
The village - same time, same place
**************
“Well, what are you waiting for?” Spike asked.
Angel seemed to have been overcome with a sudden attack of paralysis. He hadn’t moved a muscle since Lorne had left.
Spike slipped his coat off and dropped it on the ground. Angel continued to stare into space.
“What’s up, Luv?” Spike asked, reaching up to wrap his arms around Angel’s neck.
He brushed his lips against Angel’s.
Angel blinked.
“Give us a kiss then,” Spike said.
Angel frowned. At least it was an improvement on the blank stare.
“But… how can we be sure it’s safe?” Angel asked. “I want you so much sweetheart but I can’t risk losing my soul again… not after what happened last time…”
Huh? How could he know about that? Oh, right! He meant in Sunnydale.
“Lorne might be mistaken…”
“Nah, couldn’t happen, Luv,” Spike said. “He’s like the Pope… infallible.”
’Cept for that one time, of course, but that was different. This Angel didn’t need to know about that.
“It’s okay, Luv. I won’t let you hurt anyone…”
“I’m not sure…”
“I’ll stake you meself if I have to…”
“Promise?”
“Yeah, I promise.”
It’d kill him to do it but he’d do it if he had to and, if he didn’t, Wesley would.
“Then, what are we waiting for?” Angel leered at him. “Strip!”
**************
“Perhaps one of us should go and check on Angel and Spike,” Wesley suggested. “I appreciate that they… have a lot of catching up to do but we do have Fred and the baby to think of.”
“A couple of hours can’t hurt,” Fred said. “They’ve been apart for… how long is it?”
“From Angel’s perspective, a hundred years,” Wesley said.
He was beginning to grow impatient. If they didn’t set off soon they’d never make it through the forest before nightfall which would mean having to stay another day and if they failed to return the day after that, Cordelia and Doyle would be coming after them and getting into who knew what kind of trouble.
“You are sure that Angel’s soul is in no danger?” Wesley asked.
“Oh, quite sure, Sweetie.”
“And when you read Angel it was clear they’d both be returning with us?”
“Spike, not Angel,” Lorne corrected, “but, yes, they’re both coming with us. I’m sure of it, Honeybun. I expect they’ve just lost track of time. I’ll go and fetch them if you think we need to get going…”
“Just a minute,” Wesley said. “You read Spike, not Angel?”
“What difference…?” Fred began.
“Yes, that’s right, Darling. There was no need for Angel to sing - you know how much he hates it. Spike was whistling a happy tune when we found him.”
Wesley sank down onto the edge of Lorne’s bed.
“Oh my goodness.”
“Something wrong, Wes?”
“I’m very much afraid there could be something very wrong, very wrong indeed,” Wesley replied.
“What is it?” Fred said, coming to sit beside him.
“How could you be certain that Angel’s soul remained in his body when you saw him… with Spike?” Wesley asked.
“Er… no blood, no dead bodies… no one being torn limb from limb…”
“Do I have to remind you what happened the last time Angel lost his soul?”
“That’s exactly what I am thinking of, Sweetie.”
“Not after he escaped… Before.”
“Oh my!” Lorne exclaimed, visibly paling.
He grabbed the edge of the stairs for support.
“But surely Spike would be able to tell?”
“Angelus has fooled us before,” Wesley said. “He could do it again.”
