Chapter 100

The village - the same day

**************

“Look, Lorne, I’m not sure this is gonna work.”

“We won’t know unless we try,” Lorne replied.

Angel felt a hand in the middle of his back encouraging him to step through the door. He supposed he’d have to go along with it but he wasn’t sure he really wanted to see any of these women again.

“Angel!” three of the women chorused as he entered the room.

The others turned to face him and echoed the greeting.

“Good morning, Ladies,” Lorne said. “And how are you all this fine morning?”

One grinned from ear to ear. The former virgin blushed. The others giggled.

“Hi!” Angel said.

Fuck, what was he supposed to say?

“Angel has to leave today, don’t you, Sweetie? And, he couldn’t leave without a goodbye kiss from each of you.”

A kiss? Lorne hadn’t said anything about a kiss!

The woman with the grin - Lela was it? - approached him.

She was wrapping her arms around his neck. Ah! Now he understood why Lorne had suggested the kiss. It was so he could be sure of each one’s scent.

He bent his head to kiss her and she grabbed him, pulling him close and forcing her tongue down his throat. He felt more than a little stunned by the time she released him.

“Now, put him down, Petal. You’ve had your turn, Sweetie. Let someone else see some action.”

The others formed an orderly line and Angel steadily worked his way through them, saving the virgin until last. He gave her a kiss on the forehead and turned to leave.

“Bye, bye, my darlings!” Lorne called as they made their exit.

“Goodbye girls!” Angel added.

“Come and see us again soon, Angel,” one of the girls shouted after them.

The others giggled.

************

“Well?” Lorne asked, when they reached the middle of the square. “Any luck?”

“One is pregnant and she wasn’t last night,” Angel said.

“Oh!” Lorne exclaimed. “Well, look on the bright side, Angelcakes. We know it works. You might not have been able to detect it and then we’d have still been in the dark.”

“Hmph!”

“Which one was it?”

“I can’t remember her name… Fuck! I made a woman pregnant and I don’t even know her name…”

“Something tells me that’s not a first for you, Sweetie.”

Lorne was right, of course.

Angel nodded.

“The first one to kiss me. She was dressed in pink last night. You said she gave good head - you were right about that…”

“Oh, that’s Lena,” Lorne said. “Mmm, she does, doesn’t she? Her brother’s even better though. Pity he wasn’t there last night.”

“At least she’s the only one…”

“To give great head?”

“No! Who’s pregnant.”

“Oops! Sorry, Honey. Got kinda side-tracked by thoughts of that mouth…”

“What am I gonna do, Lorne? How can I leave the mother of my child? Even if she doesn’t want anything to do with me, I can’t abandon her.”

“I think you need to go and talk to Spike, Sweetie.”

“Fuck! Spike!”

Angel felt ashamed to realise he’d almost forgotten about him.

“What am I gonna do about Spike?”

Lorne didn’t answer. He suddenly seemed lost in thought.

“Lorne?”

“Sorry, Angelcakes. I was just thinking. Are you sure it was Lena?”

“I never forget anyone who gives head like that,” Angel replied.

“I didn’t mean that,” Lorne replied. “Are you sure she’s the one who’s pregnant?”

“Yes, her scent was unmistakable.”

“Then I hate to break it you, Darling, but you’re not the father.”

“What do you mean?”

“How much do you remember about last night?”

If he put his mind to it, Angel could recall every moment. He wished he couldn’t. Why had he done it?

“Unless my memory is playing tricks on me you didn’t actually sleep with her…”

“I had sex with all of them,” Angel said. “Repeatedly.”

“Well, yes, but with Lena it was different… You had sex… but not the kind that leads to babies being made, if you know what I mean?”

Angel smiled. Lorne could be remarkably coy at times. But, he was right about Lena. Angel had buggered her three times but they hadn’t had conventional sex.

“I remember… But, if I’m not the father then who?”

“Er… I fear that would be me,” Lorne admitted sheepishly.

With all that had been going on last night, Angel hadn’t kept track of what Lorne was up to. He’d seen someone blowing him - Lena presumably - but had there been more to it than that?

“But, I don’t understand…”

Wasn’t Lorne gay?

“I thought you said you were an ‘all guy kind of guy’?”

Wasn’t that the phrase he’d used?

“Oh, I am, Sweetie. It’s just that once every fifty years or so I like to remind myself why.”

Okay. Angel nodded. He could relate to that.

“I’m afraid it’s my baby not yours.”

“Then shouldn’t you be the one contemplating staying?”

“Good Lord, no! I can’t wait to get out of here. I’ve had my bags packed since I first knew you were on your way.”

“But doesn’t it bother you that you’ll never know your own son?”

“Neither will she, Honey,” Lorne said. “It’s a species thing. She’ll lose it before she even knows she’s pregnant. Ask Fred. She can explain the physiology better than me. Science never was my strong point.”

“Oh.”

Angel didn’t know what to say. He supposed he should be relieved but part of him was disappointed. He’d always wanted a son. For a hundred years he’d lived with the knowledge that he never could and then, suddenly, there was hope. Now that hope was dashed.

“I’m sorry, Sweetie,” Lorne said. “I never realised how much having a child meant to you.”

Angel hadn’t realised just what it meant either until now.

“It’s always the things we can’t have which become the most important…”

“Spike is more important,” Angel said. “I should go to him…”
