Chapter 3 & 4
Chapter 3
Dawn put a finger to her lips, quietly opening the door before going inside. All four stayed on the porch. She turned back,” Come on.”
Both Willow and Spike were shaking their heads,” We’ll meet you somewhere.”
Stomping her foot just a little,” Come in.”
She leveled them all with a glare and they took the hint, coming inside and hanging by the door,” Mommy! Mommy!”
Dawn knelt down and hugged her son, thanking the babysitter who got paid and quietly left. Willow was blinking in astonishment but Spike was unusually quiet,” Guys...this is John...my son.”
The redhead immediately started squealing happily, begging for details while Spike glanced back at the companion witches. Leaning back to not draw attention,” Check out the parameter for signs of that demon. Don’t engage, just hunt. And one other thing...” His voice taking on a grating quality,” If you see a dopey looking brunette by the name of Xander Harris...keep him away.”
The twins nodded and disappeared to follow their assignment. The blond turned to observe the two ladies fawning over the child and talking about the past. Little John jumped down from the couch on his short legs and padded the length of the living room to him. He held out a pudgy little hand and the blond frowned but took it. John grinned and started tugging the vampire to the television, pulling on him to sit.
Once he accomplished his task he crawled up into Spike’s lap and started touching features, chattering about how cold he was and his neat scar. The vampire’s nostrils flared, picking up that scent again that Dawn was covered in. He leaned in close and nipped at the boy’s fingers, tasting what he suspected. John giggled,” Can you do the face?”
Frowning,” What face?”
Whispering softly,” The vamp face.” Quirking an eyebrow, he did as asked and smiled when the boy giggled and clapped. He started when the lad threw his small arms around his neck, surprising him,” Uncle Spike!”
With large, golden eyes he looked at Dawn who was smiling softly, playing with a lank of hair that was well past her waist. Shrugging just a little,” I told him about his uncle Spike...wasn’t sure if he’d ever meet you...”
Willow had a similar smile, drawing Dawn’s attention again while Spike turned his back to the child. He hugged him for a moment before pulling back to look into the chocolate eyes,” Where’s your Da?”
It was surprising how solemn a child’s features could be,” Don’t know. Mommy cries when she talks about him so I don’t talk about him.”
Vampire face melting away,“ Bloody hell...”

Willow and Spike walked side by side after their visit, taking the back way when Buffy pulled up in the front with her date. The redhead had studied the blond’s reactions, startled when he didn’t react jealously. If anything he seemed disinterested in the slayer and the witch was happy for it,” Something’s not right.”
His statement pulled her out of her thoughts,” What’s not? Dawn seemed fine-“
” Don’t...don’t be fooled by that act she’s pulling...something’s eating her alive and it has to do with that kid. The father more specifically.”
Shrugging,” Maybe it was a one night stand and it devastated her. Summers don’t have much luck with men.”
She winced as soon as the statement left her mouth but he waved it off,” Piffle...doesn’t have anything to do with Dawn. She’s more’n a Summers than the slayer and twice as strong. What I mean is that the kid was an accident and she wasn’t too happy who the dad was...especially if she brought me into this...”
Frowning,” Brought you into this?”
Sighing softly, glancing at his companion,” I had Tina and Todd stick around the house...doing a sweep. That alert we got said that demon would stalk the slayer...right?” At her nod he continued,” Not a trace and I have the feeling we’re not going to find him.”
“ But why would-“
” We were set up.” Willow’s jaw dropped and she grew instantly nervous,” We’re not in danger. Didn’t you notice how not surprised Dawn was when she saw me...but how shocked she was to see you?” The redhead nodded,” I think Dawn tracked me down and sent me a message...thinking it was the one thing that would bring me here.”
Murmuring to herself,” That Buffy’s in danger.”
Snorting to himself, not noticing her surprised glance,” All she had to do was cook up something about her being in trouble, not that bitch.”
Willow screeched to a halt in her tracks,” Spike?” He turned and frowned at her expression,” Are you saying you came here...for Dawn...”
He smiled just a little, that mischievous glint in his eyes that she adored and slowly stalked toward her, talking as he went,”...not at all...my fine little pixie...” He leaned in close and brushed his lips against her own, enjoying her gasp of surprise and something more. Whispering against her ear,” I came here for you.”
Chapter 4
Dawn threw on her clothes, tears in her eyes once she heard the soft closing of the door. She could leave now and Spike would protect her she was sure. Her own sister couldn’t and Giles was gone but her ‘big brother’ would never let her down.
She moved silently down the hallway to John’s room, hearing his soft snores of sleep. Creeping inside, she picked up a few of his things and tossed them into a duffel bag. John woke up, making childish whimpering sounds and just wanting to go back to sleep. She picked him up, shushing him to keep him quiet and soundlessly escaped into the night.
She ran as fast as she could, knowing that her savior would be at the only motel in town. She yelped when two witches appeared in front of her, those same two. But they gestured without speaking for her to follow and she nodded her agreement, trying to hold herself together. But once she was within eyesight of her haven the dam over her emotions broke.

Spike jerked awake, sleep just about to take hold when he detected the faint knock at the hotel door and the sound of crying. Instantly knowing it was Dawn, he threw on some jeans and flung open the door. What little air he kept in his body was knocked out of him as she gripped him tightly and cried into his chest. Effortlessly he picked up the weeping girl and put her down on his bed, laying on his side next to her to comfort her.
John wiggled out from between the two of them, blinking with tired eyes and sucking on his thumb. The blond pressed a familial kiss to Dawn’s head and got out of bed, finding a few blankets and making a little cot for the boy, surrounding it with pillows. The lad grinned and crawled over the wall, falling asleep almost instantly as a light blanket was folded over him.
Spike sat back on the bed, welcoming the shaking girl back into his arms before picking up the phone for his neighbor. Willow answered sleepily, hanging up as soon as she heard the crying and racing for his room. Willow used her spare key to enter and rushed over to the bed to help support Dawn, afraid she was about to have a break down.
The vampire nodded a little, reaching for the telephone and dialing a familiar number. After two rings a groggy Buffy answered with a soft,” Hello?”
Keeping his voice calm and at it’s past sarcasm when dealing with the blond,” Hello, Slayer.”
Instantly awake,” Spike!” Her voice changed from happy surprise to it’s usual wariness around him,” What do you want?”
Rolling his eyes and winking at Willow,” Oh, nothing much...just warning you I’m back in town for a couple of days...saving your hide and all.”
Her voice sputtering,” Y-you’re...you’re the ‘source’?”
Laughing huskily,” Oh wouldn’t you just love that...your faithful little dog? Sorry. I’m just hired help for your researcher. By the way...have you checked on your sis...lately...”
There were rustles and the sound of her screaming for her sister before she picked up the phone,” If you hurt her you bastard-“
” Spare me. Never hurt Nibblet and you bloody know it. She ran into a bit of trouble and I was happy to help.”
“ Where is she?”
Tutting,” Now, now luv, can’t tell you that or I wouldn’t be able to keep her safe. Tell ya what, though...I’ll bring her back by with the source tomorrow night. How’s that sound?”
“ Touch her and I’ll kill you Spike.”
Growling softly, his comradery tone changing to angry and fiercely determined,” Oh, so now you’re all protective of my girl? Too little, too late, you insufferable bitch!” He slammed the phone down irritably, turning away to look at three sets of very wide eyes and he shrugged a little,” She gets on my last nerve.”

Buffy jerked the receiver away from her ear at the very loud click. Something about what he just said disturbed her and it tugged at her brain as important. She just couldn’t figure it out. It was that same nagging feeling she’d been having for years but every time she concentrated on it, it slipped away.
Spike didn’t make idle threats. She knew him too well. Even when he said meaningless insults, he had meaning. Usually carefully hidden but it was there. That’s how she’d figured out he’d set them up all those years ago with Adam. He’d wanted her to figure out he was working for the opposition and a well placed insult was all it took.
She sat down, thinking through his ‘too little, too late’ speech. That meant that Dawn had already been hurt and in some way she’d known about it. So she started thinking about Dawn. About how her smiles were just a little too wide and her eyes never quite sparkled. She’d dismissed it as mom missage but now she wasn’t so sure. Could Dawn have told her about someone hurting her and she’d forgotten. It wasn’t possible.
Then her mind flashed to the news that Giles had died. About the defeated look that stole over her sister’s face. Not just pain at his passing but a look of surrender. Like she admitted that she was beaten and whatever she’d been fighting had won. Growling in frustration, she picked up the phone and called the only spell caster she knew, hoping the former rat could help her.
Dawn put a finger to her lips, quietly opening the door before going inside. All four stayed on the porch. She turned back,” Come on.”
