Chapter 4: Used and Using
Buffy took the bus from Spike apartment and headed back to Sunnydale. She smiled as she thought about the man who took such good care of her the night before. She knew she should have left some way for him to contact her, but that night was so perfect. He was too good to be true, and she did not want to find out later that he had just used her like that guy Parker did. It didn’t even cross her mind that she had used him.
Her cell phone rang, startling her out of her thoughts.
“Hello?”
“Hey, B. Where are you?” Faiths asked on the other end of the line.
Buffy sighed. “On the bus, going home.”
“You don’t sound too thrilled about that.”
“Yeah, well. It’s not exactly the happiest of places right now.”
“I know, B, but it will get better.”
Silence was all Faith heard. She decided to change the subject.
“So what happened with blondie?”
Buffy smiled. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“You had sex with him! I didn’t think you had it in you to sleep with a guy you had just met. Come on spill! You know I want details and none of that blurry watercolor stuff either!”
Buffy blushed. “Uh, don’t think so. You know I’m not one with the sharing.”
“Yeah, I know. Was he good though? You can at least tell me that, cause he looked like a good ride.”
Buffy chuckled. “He was great and I don’t just mean the sex. He was very sweet and listened while I talked about my mom. He even made me hot chocolate… with marshmallows.”
“How cute!” Buffy rolled her eyes at the sarcasm dripping from Faiths voice.
“Did you at least get his number?”
“No.”
“Does he have your number?”
“No.”
“What? You had this amazing night with this guy and you didn’t even swap numbers? How dumb are you?”
Buffy was affronted. “Hey! You know why I can’t be giving out my numbers to guys I meet.”
“So you can sleep with a guy, that’s okay, but swapping numbers is a big no-no?”
“Faith” Buffy warned.
“Look I get it. You just used blondie, nothing to be ashamed of there. You were feeling lonely and depressed. Its not like Riley’s been about lately to assuage that.”
Buffy fell silent as she realized that Faith was right. She did use Spike to make her feel better. She felt like such a horrible person. Not only did she cheat on her boyfriend with a guy she just met, but she used said guy without a second thought.
“Look, B. I gotta run. Call me when you get home, alright?”
“Yeah. Bye.” Buffy hung up the phone and stared out the window, lost in her own thoughts again.
******
Spike was pissed. He couldn’t believe she had just left him without a word. Did nothing about last night mean anything to her? It sure did to him. He never felt such an immediate connection to anyone else. Not even Drusilla, a woman he once considered the love of his life. She had used him. She wanted to be an actress and when she learned he was moving to LA for school, she said all the right things and got him to take her too. She convinced him that she had no ulterior motive for coming with him; she just wanted to be by his side. The moment she got her first acting job, she left him. William just wasn’t good enough for her.
That is when William became Spike. He was tired of everyone using him and walking all over him. He adopted a new badass look, a new attitude, and vowed to never be a whipping boy again.
Then came Buffy and he was back to being William again. Comforting her and wanting to do everything in his power to make her feel better and she used him, left without a word and without any way of contacting her.
He stalked over to his kitchen and pulled out a bottle of Jack he had hidden. He took a giant swallow of the liquor. He reveled in the feel of the liquor burning its way to his stomach. He thought back to how cute Buffy was when she took that shot. He scowled and threw the bottle against the wall causing glass to fly everywhere. He felt marginally better and decided to not let her get to him anymore. He was over her…really.
******
Buffy walked from the bus stop to her house, stopping when she saw who was sitting on her porch.
“Riley.”
He quickly stood up and came over to her. “Oh, baby. I’m so sorry about your mom.” He tried to envelope Buffy into his arms, but she stepped away from him.
“Don’t Riley. Don’t pretend like you care.”
“What? Of course I care! I was so worried about you! Where were you last night?”
“Where was I? Where were you?” Buffy’s eyes flashed angrily. “This is the first time I’ve even seen you since Mom got sick. You couldn’t take time out to come and comfort your girlfriend?”
“Buffy you know how the military is. I can’t just up and leave on a whim.”
“I don’t think the death of a friend constitutes a whim, Riley. I think that’s pretty damn important.”
“Look Buffy, I know how upset you are and I’m sorry I couldn’t make it sooner, but I’m here now. Doesn’t that count for something?”
“No it doesn’t. Goodbye, Riley.” Buffy started to walk past him, but he grabbed her arm.
“Buffy, wait.”
“Let go of me.”
“Not until you listen to what I have to say.”
Buffy shook his hand off. “No. We’re done here. Go home to your barracks Riley. It’s where you want to be anyway.”
She walked into her house and slammed the door behind her.
“Buffy?”
She looked up to see her sister looking at her with concern. Buffy smiled weakly.
“Hey, Dawnie.”
“Are you okay?” Dawn looked out the window as Riley screeched off in his car.
“Yeah, I’m okay.” She tucked a strand of Dawns long brown hair behind her sister’s ear. “It’s just been a really long week.”
Dawn hugged her. “I know.”
“What do you say we pig out on some ice cream and watch some really stupid movies?”
Dawn smiled. “Sounds good to me.”
******
“So tell me about her.”
Spike looked up from the pool table to his friend Lindsey. “About who?”
Spike sunk ball thirteen and lined up to sink ball nine.
“This girl you’re obsessing over.” Spike fumbled his shot and the nine ball rolled down the table and bounced lightly against the edge. Spike shot a glare at Lindsey, blaming him for the botched shot.
Lindsey smirked. “So there is a girl.” He grabbed his cue stick and went to line up his shot.
“There is no soddin’ girl.”
“Right. You moping around here and occasionally getting that far away gaze has nothing to do with a girl. Man, you’re acting the same way as when Drusilla left you.”
Spike growled at him.
“Sorry. So who is she?” Lindsey sunk his ball and continued onto the next.
Spike sighed. “Remember how I wanted you to go to Coyote Ugly last night.”
“Yeah?”
“Well, I still went and that’s where I met her.”
“Does this ‘her’ have a name?”
Spike looked at him. “Buffy. And don’t say anything about it, believe me.”
Lindsey laughed but let him continue.
“She was there trying to drown her grief. Her mother had died a few days ago and the day before yesterday was her funeral. I took her home with me, because she didn’t want to go to her house. Couldn’t handle the memories there. We talked for a while and then we slept together. She wanted me to make her forget. I was too caught up then to notice or care that she was using me to help her feel better. She left before I woke up the next morning. I have no idea of how to contact her again.” Spike downed the tequila shot he had bought.
Lindsey looked up at him. “Why do you want to? She used you. You should either be gloating that you had a one night stand with a hot girl or pissed off royally that she would do that.”
Spike snorted. “I was pissed off, mate. That wore off. Now I just want to bloody talk to her again.”
“You got it bad, man. Why don’t you find her? There can’t be that many Buffys around can there?”
“I wouldn’t even know where to look.”
“Well find someone else then and forget about her.”
“Hi guys! What are you doing?”
Spike and Lindsey looked up to see a blonde woman dressed in all pink standing before them. Spike answered her while chalking his pool cue. “Playing baseball.”
“Ooooh, Really? Can I play too?”
Spike gave a look at his friend. He heard of dumb blondes before but this was unbelievable. Lindsey nudged Spike to be nice. Spike shot him a look that clearly stated ‘You’ve got to be joking.’ Lindsey just smiled.
Spike sighed and turned back to the woman. “Sure, pet. I’m Spike and this is my friend Lindsey.”
“I’m Harmony Kendall.” She stuck her hand out to Spike. He took it, turned it over, and placed a soft kiss on the back of her hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Harm.”
