Fourth Night

Fourth Night: What if we live?

“I think this quiet spell is ending,” Buffy said. They had dusted a dozen vampires and a couple of really unusual demons tonight. A lot, even by Sunnydale standards.

She and Spike were lying in bed, moonlight streaming in.

“I don’t think we’re ready for this.” She and Spike had done the majority of the slaying themselves, though Wood had bagged a vamp and the potentials had worked as a team to kill three.

“Yeah. Glory was bad....” Spike’s voice trailed off..

“But this is worse.”

“Yeah.”

He turned onto his side and raised himself up on his forearms so he could see her better. She looked so white in the moonlight.

“At t wet we have these nights,” he said and pulled her into his arms.

“I’m glad,” she said. “It’s more than I thought we would ever have.” She stroked his face, fingers barely touching him.

“No regrets,” he reminded her. “We needed the time to heal, to deal with all the changes.”

They were both silent, content to have found this small calm in the storms of their lives.

Suddenly Buffy sat up.

“Spike! What if we both-live? What if we survive? We’ve both been thinking that we won’t make it. But what if we do?”

“We’ll be together.” he said, slowly.

“Of course. And we’ll tell everyone they’ll have to accept us as a couple.”

“Right.” Everyone who survives.

“I’m twenty two. That’s old for a slayer. I might not have too many years left.” Buffy flopped onto her back

“I’m a vampire. I could live a hundred more years.”

After a moment, Buffy said, “Maybe, if we live, I could retire. Faith could take over.”

“The slayer line is through her, right?”

“Yeah. And then I could live longer. But I would age.”

“It won’t matter. We’d be together.” He rained gentle kisses across her face.

“Until I die.”

“Or until I die. Vampires can die, too.”

‘That’s true.”

“You and Dawn could come to England with me, leave Sunnyhell behind.”

“To your house?” she paused. “Did you ever take Dru there? And Angelus?”

“No. Felt uncomfortable about them eating all the old family retainers. They pretty much went thought the London house. But while they were feasting I got a chance to hide papers, see my solicitor. Dunno, somehow I just knew I wanted to hang on to it, privately.”

He snorted. “Dru was so insane. She told me how Angelus and Dracula would make me kill all of my family and friends, give them all my money and property. But she waits until we were already at my home, after Mum. She found my old nursery and got involved with my sister’s old dolls, instead of keeping an eye on me. So I just took care of business. Got to my sister, got her out of the country. She never knew. Angelus and Darla arrived a couple nights later, but it never occurred to them to double check much. They just assumed all my decisions would be as evil as theirs were.”

“You had a sister that you saved from vampires?”

“Yeah. Amabel. Wasn’t hard. She was in love with this poor shop clerk, couldn’t marry him. Not in our social class, you understand, even though we grew up with him. I gave him a big roll of money and tickets to New York City by steamer, to get her out of the country.”

“Angelus and Darla had me sell the London house. That bankrolled us for some time.”

“Did you ever see your sister again?”

“No. Too dangerous, might set Angelus on the scent. I did see my niece once, though. Nineteen twenties. Angel wasn’t pulling the strings then, so I looked them up. Amabel had passed away. Her daughter, Diana, was a married lady with kids. One Christmas Eve I watched their house. Followed them to church. Didn’t go inside. But I was glad to see her. She looked happy.”

“When is the last time you were there, at your country place?”

“ Windhill. That’s its name.1983. Dru and I were in London. I slipped away for a couple days. It’s near Avebury. Used to ride my pony there when I was a lad.”

Spike on a pony. Now there was a visual. Buffy grinned.

“What’s Avebury?”

“Ancient magic. A stone circle, like Stonehenge. Repellant to vampires. I wonder if I would feel repelled now?”

“Do you ever think about turning me ?” The question came out of nowhere. “So we could be together?”

“I did, when we first fought. Not after Willow’s spell, though.”

“Willow’s spell?”

“Yeah, the engaged thing.” He stroked her hair behind her ears and his cool fingers felt her pulse. “All that kissing...all that smooth, warm golden skin, all that throbbing, pulsing life. You have no idea...”

He sighed and kissed her softly on the mouth. “I had no idea...it was so intoxicating, all that life. Feeling your heart start to race when we kissed....feeling your pulse all around my finger when I felt you up, just for that second. Never really recovered from that spell, because I could never forget how you felt. Always was dissatisfied with vampire girls, after that.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Maybe if Willow had known she’d have done a forgetting spell. But I didn’t tell. It was a pretty perverted way for a vampire to feel. Didn’t even admit it to myself until you were doing Captain Cardboard. I was so jealous. I wanted to kill him.”

“Yeah.”

“I hate magic. It always leaves residual effects.”

“But now you’re happy to be with me, right?”

“You know I am. Just saying that spell got things going that no one intended.”

“Maybe I can get Faith out of jail to be the slayer. I think she’s reformed. Then I’d be free to move.”

“Lets. Just you, me and Dawnie.”

“We won’t have a perfect life. What with aging and stuff.”

“You’ll never have babies.”

“There’s that. But I figured out this last year that I would never have a normal life. It’s okay. Part of the slayer deal. And I do have you.”

“ You have me.” They kissed slowly. “ No, not a normal life. But not having an apocalypse every year would be an improvement. And Windhill isn’t a hot spot for Big Bads. You’d have to travel to London to find much demon action.”

“Sounds so nice.” Buffy yawned and rolled onto her side, snuggling into a spoon shape for sleep. “ I could have a garden. We could get you a pony.” She giggled at her wit.

Spike threw a bare leg over her , pushed her onto her stomach and straddled himself over her thighs, and began tickling her. Buffy giggled louder and had to shove her face into the pillow to keep quiet.

Spike bent over and licked her neck below her ear. “I already have a really fine mount, thanks.”

A moment later she gasped.

“Giddiup.” Spike whispered
