Chapter 99
The village - the same day
**************
Spike had remained with Fred and Wesley while Lorne and Angel went off who knows where to do the reading.
“We could always come back in a couple of months to re-evaluate the situation,” Wesley suggested.
“No, I don’t wanna leave him here,” Spike said.
“I didn’t mean that we should,” Wesley explained. “I was hoping you might be able to persuade Angel to return home with us on the understanding that we could visit this world again at some point in the future in order to establish whether there are, in fact, any children for him to be concerned about.”
“There’s more to it than that,” Spike said. “He’s afraid, Wes… Afraid he’s gonna cease to exist…”
“Oh?”
Wesley frowned and pushed his glasses up.
“Oh you mean when his future self arrives… I see.”
“He wants to stay here. I think the children, if there are gonna be any, are just an excuse.”
Spike began to pace.
“I don’t wanna lose him, Wes. Am I being selfish wanting him to come home with us?”
“No, I don’t think you are. A great many people have come to rely on Angel’s services, not to mention those of us who value his friendship. He’s needed in LA, more than he’s needed here. It would be selfish of him to stay.”
“Hah! Who’s gonna tell him that?”
“I will,” Fred said. “I can see how much he means to you, Spike, and I know what he means to Lorne. You all belong together. He has to see that… he has to come with us.”
“I’m not sure that would be wise,” Wesley said. “To say anything, I mean. Angel can be very stubborn…”
Pig-headed more like.
Spike had a sudden thought.
“What’s gonna happen to the other Lorne when we take this one home with us?” he asked. “Will the other one just disappear?”
“I can’t be certain but I believe it’s unlikely,” Wesley said, “unless they both try to occupy the same physical space.”
“You mean if they touch,” Spike continued, “they’ll go poof and the universe as we know it will cease to exist?”
Fred giggled.
“Only if one of them is made of anti-matter,” she said.
“So, the two Lornes could exist side by side in the same dimension?” Spike mused.
Hmm, this inter-dimensional time travel lark was starting to get interesting…
**************
Wesley could see where Spike was heading with this and, on the whole, he rather wished he couldn’t as graphic images began to flood his consciousness.
“S’pose we could leave this Angel here and come back for him when the other one turns up,” Spike said.
“We have no idea when that will be,” Wesley began, “and, I know it’s not want you want to hear, Spike, but we really can’t be certain if he’ll turn up.”
“S’pose you’re right,” Spike mumbled.
Spike grabbed his coat from the chair where he’d left it the night before.
“I’m going for a smoke,” he said, opening the door.
Wesley watched as Spike headed outside. Spike was hurting, try as he might to hide it. Wesley wished there was something he could do.
**************
“How far outside the village do we need to be?” Angel asked as he strode purposefully along the path which led to the forest.
“Slow down, Angelcakes,” Lorne said, hurrying to keep up.
He’d had an idea.
“Let’s get this over with,” Angel said. “Can’t we do it here?”
“No, Sweetie. They’re working in the fields. See.”
Lorne pointed to a small group of villagers a couple of hundred yards away.
“Then where?”
“We may not need to do it all,” Lorne said.
Angel turned and stared at him. He had his full attention now.
“Why don’t we just go and visit the girls?” Lorne said.
“What would that achieve?” Angel said.
He was scowling. Lorne could tell his patience was wearing thin.
“They won’t have any idea yet which of them is pregnant,” Angel continued.
“No, but you will,” Lorne replied. “Didn’t you say a woman’s scent changes when she’s pregnant?”
“Yes,” Angel said, “but I’m not sure I’d notice any difference so soon.”
“There’s one way to find out,” Lorne said, taking Angel’s arm. “Come on, we’ll go and pay them a visit. After all, you did sleep with six of them last night, Honeybun. You can’t leave without saying goodbye, can you? It wouldn’t be polite.”
**************
Spike found himself at the stream again, sitting in the very spot where he’d done his best not to watch Wes and Fred’s antics the night before. He’d passed several of the villagers on the way, returning from whatever chores they’d been up at the crack of dawn to carry out. He had the place to himself now. It was real peaceful. Not unpleasant either. Maybe he should offer to stay here with Angel. It’d be better than being on his own back in LA but what if the other Angel, his Angel, turned up and he wasn’t there? What if they couldn’t make the portal open again? Hadn’t Wes said it was dependent on some mystical hot spot being fully charged? They might never be able to be together again. On the other hand, what if they did make it through the portal and came here to find him and this version of Angel, then what? He couldn’t see Angel being prepared to share, even with himself…
