SECRET SOCIETY

CHAPTER 39 – SECRET SOCIETY

June 12, 2008

10:10am

The nurse Buffy had spoken to, made her rounds to her charges for the day. She had 5 patients in various stages of severe mental disorders, the worst of the worst. These were the kind of patients who usually, had no hope of getting well.

Her personal feeling was that if a family member wanted a message delivered, it didn't hurt her any to do so. She likened it to talking with a coma patient. They may or may not hear you. She was young and hadn't had time to become hardened yet. At least not too much.

She entered room 814 to see a youngish man lying strapped to his bed.

She gently shook him, "William, William!"

Slowly he opened his eyes, looking at her with a blank stare.

"I'm Maryann, your nurse, how are you feeling?"

William couldn't think clearly, his head felt heavy, as if he'd been hit by a brick, and his tongue didn't want to work. He tried to say something, but all that came out was something between a word that sounded like, "hhheeessstststststkkkkkmmmmmeeeehhhhhhheeee," and a moan.

"It's okay, William," she said, giving him a pat. So many of these patients had long ago lost their ability to say anything coherent.

"I have a message for you. It's from your wife."

"Whhhhiiiiifffffffffffffffffffffffe."

"Yes, your wife, Elizabeth. She told me to tell you that she loves you and that she hasn't forgotten her promise to you," she told him.

"LLLLLLLLLLLzzzzzzzzzzBBBBBBhhhhhhh prrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmssssssssddddddd."

"Yes, Elizabeth. Promise," she said smiling at him.

Somewhere inside his head, William struggled to understand the words: Wife, Elizabeth, Promise.

Maryann, straightened his pillows as best she could and had him turn to the other side, so as to not develop a bed sore. As she turned him, she saw a curious mark on his neck, covered in a small amount of what looked like dried blood. She had seen two other patients with that same mark in the past day or so. She wondered if there was some spider infestation somewhere on the floor, because each of the patients she was sure, had all been in restraints, so they couldn't have self-inflicted the small puncture wound. She made a mental note to look at those patients’ files when she returned from lunch.

As she looked down at William's chart, she saw the notes from Dr. Turner. Very curious. All very encouraging. William sounded like a man who'd suffered some sort of severe memory loss, along with some sort of mental breakdown, some depression, some disassociation, but nothing that would warrant a move down here. She read with interest, Nurse Froesch's report last night of how William had shown her a picture from his wedding and spoke of the wife he had just met. And then? Nothing. Nothing at all to have brought about such a move. No report on him flipping out, going bonkers, nothing. She made another mental note to go on the SRNS_UOC website that night and see what was going on.

"I'll check back with you in a little while, William. Bring you some food," she told him.

The door to his room closed behind her, as he whispered, “She will come for me.”

11:00am

Leroy came out the ER doors and spotting Buffy, motioned her to follow him.

“Let’s go grab some lunch,” he said to her.

“I’m not hungry,” she said, “what’s going on?”

“Not here, that’s why we’re going to get some lunch.”

They walked along the same streets as the night before and wound up at a small cyber café. They sat down at a terminal and once they’d ordered, he spoke.

“I checked William’s records from last night and you were right. There doesn’t seem toany any reason what-so-ever for the move. Dr. Turner had him scheduled to go to 10 South today, and it looks like Dr. Polydefkis over-rode that order, for some reason. Usually if a person has some severe psychotic episode, then that’s a reason, but there was nothing.”

“I need to check something else, too, which is why I came here. He logged in and typed in SRNS_UOC.com and came up to an EZBOARD message board. He typed his password and looked for the latest thread.

“What is this?”

“It’s something I shouldn’t even be sharing with you; it’s a place where nurses can go and discuss something that doesn’t seem right within the system. Stands for Secret Nurse’s Society University of Chicago. Ah…here we go. He looked at the latest entry:

BAD MEDICINE, BAD DR. ALERT!:

8:00am Last night I had a patient taken forcibly from my unit to the chronic unit. This new ‘doctor’ (using this term sarcastically!) threatened me with losing my job (when I called him and tried to intervene and question him) if I didn’t cooperate in doping him up, when I questioned him. I’m so ashamed of myself. This guy had really started coming around; he’d just seen his wife for the first time yesterday, even though he didn’t remember her. But he seemed so…hopeful, so peaceful. Then this bastard has me dope him with 30ThorThorazine, Haldol, and Ativan. He hadn’t been on anything for the past couple of weeks, even. Please advise I’m so ashamed that I didn’t do something else, but there was nobody to call at midnight.

Oh, this doctor only last night replaced patient’s reg. doctor, and he’d never even seen him one time.

Buffy felt her stomach clench again, “She’s talking about William. I think it’s the same nurse I talked to last night. I knew something was wrong, I just couldn’t put my finger on it.”

“Yeah, sounds like it. There’s another post.”

10:15am

prn00135,

I’m on the other floor, I know who you’re talking about. There’s something weird going on. His wife was up here today, upset and all. Who can blame her? Poor patient had a seizure from all the meds given last night. It’s not your fault; this guy got to me, too. I told him he couldn’t give that much med and what committee I am on, and he backed it down a bit, but when I went to check on patient after he’d left, I’d swear the patient was more strongly doped than before. Does anybody know where this guy came from? I suggest we do an Internet search on his credentials and advise the higher ups. Another nurse, checking on patient noticed a mark on his neck, and on other patient’s necks as well. They’re all patients of the same doctor and all are restrained, so where’s the marks coming from?

Buffy turned pale and started to tremble. Was this guy a vampire?
oy toy typed his password in and typed this:

11:30am

Suggest using cameras in rooms where doctor is seeing patients to see what he’s up to. Also, suggest very quick intervention on behalf of these patients. Doctor seems to be dangerous and vindictive. Will help with Internet search.

Leroy turned to Buffy, “I suggest you find Dr. Turner and get him back on William’s case as soon as you can, at least let him know what you know. But you can’t tell him about this site. We nurses got together after a few incidents a couple of years ago and it’s by membership only. We can rant, rave, and lick our wounds, as well as let each other know what’s going on. And we can help the patients by letting each other know about bad doctors. This information and anything we find on that quack will find it’s way to the top, to the trustees, and even to the media.”

Buffy nodded, “Do you have his number? They wouldn’t give it to me on the 10th floor.

Leroy changed screens and got a whole list of doctor’s home phones, pagers, cell phones, and even email addresses. Buffy took down them all, including those for Dr. Polydefkis, as well.

“I gotta get back to work, but if you want to stay on here and cyber snoop on you-know-who, feel free. You can print this stuff out, too. Otherwise, I’ll try to get back here after work,” he said, getting up.

“I’ve got a couple of friends who are way better at this kind of thing, than I am. I’m gonna call them and have them do this. Oh, by the way, do you think that Amelia would mind the company for another night. My sister, Dawn is coming in from L.A. today. She was bringing me some stuff, plus she wanted to see Sp…William.”

“She probably won’t mind as long as you don’t drink her milk. Gotta thing ‘bout that!” he said.

“I got the message. Thanks, Leroy. You’ve been a godsend.”

“Just like to help and do what’s right. It’s all any of us can do, right?”

Buffy nodded and waved as Leroy walked out the door.

Buffy took down a few more numbers of the administration and the patient liaison, in case she needed them.”

She got up and asked the waitress, “Can you hold my place here while I make a couple of phone calls?”

“Yeah, just don’t be too long, other people waiting…”

“Okay,” Buffy said, walking out onto the sidewalk.

She called Willow. It was early evening in the U.K.

“Hello?”

“Willow, its Buffy.”

“Buffy? Did you see Spike? How is he?”

“I saw him, Willow. It was…” she swallowed hard, had it only been yesterday?

“It was wonderful, really, considering he doesn’t remember me, but he’s okay. At least he was. Something horrible has happened.”

“What?” Willow asked, although somehow not surprised. Poor Spike had a long history of not following a very linear road to happiness.

Buffy filled her in on all that had happened over the past few days, especially since the previous night.

“Send me his name, you’re on the Internet now, right? Okay, email it to me and I’ll find out what I can about him. Do you want me to come?”

Buffy hesitated. It was one thing to have not talked to her in a couple of years, but she hadn’t seen her in over 5, it felt so strange. She decided.

“Yes Willow, I do. I think I may need you. This is ugly in a way that doesn’t seem to be just bad ‘doctoring’ I don’t know…”

“You think Angel and Wolfram and Hart are behind it?”

“God, Willow! I never even thought of that, but it seems to have his fingerprints all over it. I mean, he did try to find the amulet, and was probably responsible for the death of Professor Lipton. He must know…”

“That Spike shanshu’ed and is trying to get to him for some reason, but what?” Willow asked.

“He can’t stop Spike from becoming human, he is already. Did I mention that, Willow,” Buffy asked, awe in her voice, just remembering the fact, “he is!”

“But there was something else that I told you about the prophecy that I couldn’t access, whatever else it is, it probably has to do with Angel’s interest in Spike, otherwise, he’d just leave him alone, don’t you think?” Willow asked.

Buffy smiled, remembering how much her and Willow had played off each other, read each other’s thoughts, worked together.

“I think you’re right. And I do want you to come. I need you, Willow.”

“Then I’m there, just email me that info and I’ll be on the next plane out. I’ll let you know when I’m arriving. Probably won’t be until tomorrow morning or afternoon.”

Buffy gave Willow her cell phone number and went back into the cyber café and emailed her the information on Dr. Polydefkis.

She then called Dr. Turner’s home phone number.
