The morning sun glared through the blinds almost unforgiving, Horus groaned and rolled over. Attempting at a few more minutes of sleep before he had to get up and take care of his three children.

Mornings it was his responsibility to get the children up and to the schools daycare because Dawn was already at the school teaching. Groaning he sat up and rubbed his eyes, opening them he was surprised to see Dawn sitting at the foot of the bed, fully dressed and staring off into space.

“Dawn?” He asked questionably. He noticed the tense set of her shoulders and scooted over to her when she let out a heavy sigh. “What’s wrong?”

Dawn looked over at her husband, her eyes rimmed red from tears.. “Tracy Gordon’s body was found just off the grounds this morning.”

“Who? What happened?” Horus reached out and wrapped his arm around his smaller wife’s shoulders.

“She was murdered. Willow did…a spell and the killers signature is skin walker.” Dawn met Horus’s eyes. “They don’t know what kind…but its…your mothers trying to keep the children in the house right now and everyone’s pointing fingers at Ryan or Remy. The students are in a panic, it’s been ages since any of the slayers have been murdered and not killed during a slay.”

“Why would they think its Ryan or Remy?” Horus was more curious than anything, yes there was something…off about the two. And his mother had told him the night she returned with the cats to put instincts aside and try to give them a chance.

“Because they’re new…and well the only thing Willow COULD pull off Tracy was that whoever killed her was some kind of cat.” Dawn looked up worriedly. “I know the pack has rules and Laws and I respect that I really do but I’ve met Remy and he’s such a sweet boy and from what he says Ryan all but walks on water.”

Horus looked away, he knew Dawn didn’t know the older customs and that was his fault. “They’re mixed Dawnie. Ryan and Remy are Lion and Tiger…Mother told me after they returned.”

“They told her?”

“No she just…finally realized what the second scent was.” Horus ran a hand through his hair, ignoring his wife’s fond smile at the action.

“I’m kind of confused…I know you told me all this when Joyce was born but…isn’t your grandmother a tiger? What’s the issue with them being mixed?”

“Yes she is but that was long ago, even then…you see when you and I have a baby…the children aren’t mixed or half human, yes they inherit things from you but overall my DNA takes over and they’re full skin walker. No human at all…essentially it’s a survival mechanism skin walkers have. My grandmother, the Queen was the product of a genetic fluke, somewhere in my family there was a tiger and when she was born into a pack of wolves they left my grandmother to die when she was a baby. Somehow she survived and had my mother. The difference is it’s frowned upon for there to be a different breed in a clan or family. Wolves stick with wolves, cats with cats and so on. When the occasional fluke happens because a tiger and a wolf or something like that sneak off into the woods and mate and by some miracle they produce a child that child is either killed or the parents and child banished.”

Horus looked over at his wife; she had a deep set frown and was glaring at him like all the Old Laws were HIS fault.

“Why if your kind wanted to survive would they kill children?” Dawn asked, that was what troubled her most.

“Because for one it was different back then, there are clans that don’t accept children that are different but as the worlds become more accepting so have the remaining Skin Walkers.” Horus looked to his hands; he studied the ring on his left finger, in the old days he would have never been allowed to mate with Dawn unless she was his blood mate. Smiling he was glad some things changed.

Horus turned back to his wife, he saw her watching him carefully, knowing he had more to say and was waiting patiently.

“The difference between my grandmother and the tigers across the yard is…my grandmother, even though her parents were wolf and it was a genetic fluke, she was full tiger. Not mixed at all…its not that there can NEVER be mating between breeds, even if it is frowned upon…its that blood mates that are different species cannot mate because well…more often than not they give birth to hybrids…like Ryan and Remy…and it is amazing that they lived at all…I have met a woman whose brother was a hybrid and he died in infancy, the combined genes can be to much for a cub. It’s just…hybrids are too unpredictable and to dangerous. Hybrids have the habit of being a little less than sane Dawn. And the fact that they’re part Lion, a breed that was wiped out by going insane well…it wouldn’t sit well with anyone.”

Dawn looked up at her husband, studying his eyes, his yellow eyes that she had always found so intense, one of the things that attracted her to him. Sighing she thought the laws and customs of the skin walkers were a little barbaric and she knew even if Horus agreed with her on some of them he could never admit that.

“I understand…what will we do about the tigers?” Dawn asked softly. Horus shrugged and looked to the ground.

“They are family now, and overall we will protect Skye if either of them ever does anything threatening but unless that happens they are family. And so we will die before we let any harm come to them, I do not believe Ryan killed the slayer…but we have to find out who did.”

Dawn sighed wearily and nodded. “I have to get to Buffy’s. She said there’s something wrong with Jaeger and she wants to talk to me about it.”

Standing she kissed his cheek and left to go find her sister.

Ryan sat at the kitchen table with Remy, watching as Raya paced the room shooting her a look that if Ryan didn’t know any better she would say was one of worry. Faith stood at the kitchen window looked across at the school.

Ryan’s ears twitched when she heard Skye coming toward the house from the back. Looking up when Skye entered the kitchen and sent her a small smile. Ryan managed a small grin in return.

Looking over at her little brother she could see he was nervous and antsy, they had both thought maybe they could finally stop running but after only three days here they already had to prepare to leave.

Ryan swallowed hard when her vision blurred. ‘Not now’ her mind screamed. Taking deep breaths she wondered if they would notice her leave. She needed her pills, the ones in the bottom of the bag in the living room but she didn’t want anymore questions.

She was grateful Raya seemed to trust her enough not to ask whether or not she killed the girl that had been found this morning. She looked up when she sensed concern; Skye was looking over at her with a look of mixed curiosity and concern.

‘Shit I forgot about that dammed connection’ Ryan turned away and forced the cold sweats she felt building away. Blood mates could feel one another’s emotions and pain when they were near one another. She had to get a better handle on this…she wasn’t ready to tell Skye.

Sighing in relief when she managed to suppress her symptoms she looked up to see a thousand questions burning in both Raya and Skye’s eyes. Faith hadn’t seemed to notice anything as she watched the outside.

“I’m going to go shower. Remy mind the wolves.” Ryan said without turning as she walked up the stairs and made it into the bathroom in time to quickly turn on the shower, praying the noise would kill any sounds of her retching into the toilet as she threw up.

Sitting against the wall she stared blankly at the room, she knew the fevers were coming more often with time in between. Standing she stripped hoping the shower would cool her body’s temperature and ward off any fever.

Standing in the cool water she let it run down her body, relaxing for the first time…she thought over things. Remy…she had to keep him safe above all. He was the only family she had. Skye…she knew what her feelings were for the girl but she wouldn’t tell her.

‘Its better she doesn’t know’ Ryan kept telling herself, but now she was wondering if that was the truth.
