Chapter 97
The village - the next morning
**************
“Rise and shine, sleepyheads!” Spike heard Lorne’s voice call out.
He rolled over and opened one eye a crack to see Lorne peering around the edge of the door.
“What time is it?” Spike asked.
“Spike! What are you doing here, Sweetie? Where are Fred and Wes?”
“Dunno,” Spike said, struggling to sit up.
Lorne stepped into the room.
“Guess they spent the night down by the river…”
Angel followed, closing the door behind him.
“Morning, Pet,” Spike said. “Sleep well?”
He grinned at his sire.
Angel said nothing, his only answer a shrug. He looked embarrassed. He actually looked embarrassed!
“The river bank?” Lorne said. “What were they doing there?”
“What weren’t they doing is more like,” Spike sniggered, climbing out of Lorne’s bed and looking around for his clothes.
“Oooo! They slept together?” Lorne squealed.
“Damn!” Angel said.
“Not following you, Luv. What’s it to you?”
“If they slept together then Wesley must know about the baby,” Angel said, handing Spike his jeans.
Spike took them from him and started to put them on.
“Yeah, he knows.”
Lorne handed him his shirt.
“Ta, Mate.”
“And?” Angel said.
“And what?”
“I’m not in the mood for games, Spike,” Angel said. “What did he say?”
“When?”
“When he learned she was pregnant.”
“‘Congratulations!’ What did you expect him to say?”
Angel growled. Seemed like his night of passion hadn’t gone too well then.
“I’ll go find the lovebirds,” Lorne said. “You two get ready to leave.”
“But I haven’t had me breakfast yet,” Spike complained.
“Ciao!” Lorne called out, shutting the door behind him.
“Okay, Luv. What’s up?” Spike asked, coming to stand in front of Angel.
“Nothing,” Angel claimed, averting Spike’s gaze.
“This is me, Angel. Come on, spill.”
Angel continued to stare at the floor.
“Different rules apply to vampires in this world,” he eventually said.
“Yeah, we know that, Pet. Remember the sunshine when we came through the portal? How it didn’t burn you to a crisp?”
“Not that,” Angel growled.
“Then what?”
Fuck, don’t say he’d vamped out and eaten one of them bleedin’ women! If that was the case, they’d better get out of here pretty damned quick.
“Apparently van-tals are fertile.”
Spike sighed in relief. Angel was jealous. That’s all it was. Thank Christ!
“Yeah, guess they must be come to think of it,” he said, recalling a conversation he’d had yesterday. “Fred said Groo’s part van-tal. That must be where he gets his superhuman strength from. What of it?”
“I had sex with six women last night,” Angel said.
“Yeah, and I have to say it’s done nothing for your mood… Shit!”
Spike suddenly felt cold all over.
“But that can’t apply to us, surely?”
“It might,” Angel said. “We won’t know for sure for a while…”
“You’re not suggesting we stay, are you?”
Bleedin’ Hell! That’s just what he was doing.
“What are you gonna do if one of ’em does turn out to have a bun in the oven? You wouldn’t know whether it was yours anyhow. Either way, it’d be hers too. You couldn’t force her to give the baby up to you…”
“Is that what you think I’d do?”
“Well, no, but what else do you have in mind? Bringing her back with us? Taking her away from the bosom of her family, from the only life she’s ever known… to what? To live in LA? With us? In any case, they won’t let you. The mother of the new champion gets to claim the throne. That’s why we need to get Fred out of here before anyone realises she’s up the duff. If they do, they’ll put her on the bleedin’ throne and we’ll never get her home.”
Angel sank down onto the end of the bed, his head in his hands.
“Spike, what am I gonna do?”
“I dunno. Luv, but Wes’ll think of something.”
He bleedin’ well better. Spike had no intention of sharing Angel with some floozy.
***************
“Fred! Wesley!” Lorne called out as he saw them both hurrying along the path toward him, hand in hand. “My darlings!”
Wesley was wearing a clean shirt. Nothing surprising there then but what was Fred wearing and what had happened to her dress?
“My, Fred, you’re looking… just like Cordelia,” Lorne said. “Those are Cordelia’s clothes, aren’t they?”
The style was unmistakable.
“Yes, I didn’t have the opportunity to shop for Fred before we left,” Wesley said.
“It was sweet of her to offer them,” Fred said. “I’d almost given up hope of wearing jeans and a t-shirt ever again.”
“You look gorgeous,” Lorne said, embracing her. “You also look a teensy bit pregnant, Poppet. I suggest putting Wesley’s sweatshirt on before we meet anyone else. It’ll be loose enough to hide the bump.”
“Good thinking,” Wesley said, pulling the sweatshirt over his head and helping Fred into it.
“How do I look?” she asked, holding out her arms and twirling around.
“Stunning,” Wesley assured her.
She giggled.
“Fred tells me you have the Trombli volumes?” Wesley said.
“Yes, Groo brought them back from one of his visits to the palace,” Lorne said. “They’re in the trunk under the stairs.”
“In which case, I see no reason why we shouldn’t be on our way as soon as we find Angel and Spike,” Wesley said.
“Oh, I know where they are, Darlings,” Lorne said, “but I’m not sure Angel is ready to leave just yet.”
“Why? Has something happened?” Wesley asked.
“Are they all right?” Fred asked.
“Oh, they’re fine, Poppet. It’s just that Angel might have a case of impending fatherhood to deal with.”
“But vampires are infertile,” Fred said. “Spike told me.”
“Angel’s had sex… here?” Wesley asked. “But why?”
“Wesley!” Fred giggled. “Why do people usually have sex?”
“But Angel’s not ‘people’. He’s different. He’s been celibate for over a hundred years apart from that one time with Buffy. Besides, he’s in love with Spike. Why would he have sex with anyone else?”
“Why indeed?” Lorne said. “But have sex last night he did, with six women no less. I know, I was there.”
“Six!” Wesley exclaimed.
“You were watching? Why Lorne, I’m ashamed of you!” Fred said.
He knew she was only teasing. She was well familiar with his peccadilloes.
“Why didn’t you stop him?” Wesley asked.
“I’m sorry, Sweetie, but I assumed he knew. I didn’t think this Angel would care. After all, he’s never known what it’s like to have a son. What he’s never had he’ll never miss.”
“I’m not so sure he’ll see it like that,” Wesley said.
