Chapter 35
Faith’s POV
I grab my jacket and walk to the front door when I hear the knock, Nam and Pike follow me. “Spike, how many times do I have to tell you to leave me alone?” I hear Buffy ask after she pulls open the front door.
Spike lifts his hand with his index finger out wanting to say something when he is interrupted by B. “We’ve had this discussion Spike I’m not sleeping with you.” He gets half way through making a sound when she jumps in again. I have to snigger into my closed fist as not to interrupt her. This is too funny for words. “No buts, you have to take this obsession for me somewhere else and push all of this unwanted repulsive energy onto someone else.”
“I’m not here to see you.” Spike replies bluntly before pushing his way past the blonde. “You ready?” He asks me standing just in front of a very confused looking B.
I swallow my laughter and pat my jacket down to make sure I got my wallet before breezing past Buffy and out of the door. “Later B!” I shout behind me, leaving the front door wide open for her to close.
I hear the door slam before I double over and have to hold my stomach so I can breath around my laughter. I wipe my eyes when I calm down a little and wipe my eyes. “Now that was classic.”
So we make our way downtown to one of Spikes favourite demon bars, we get a few funny looks when we walk in but soon the creatures in there pay us no mind as we order a shit load of drinks. I order myself a beer and jack, on the rocks. I know I haven’t had spirits for a while but one or two can’t hurt… can they? Pike wanted a gin and tonic. I thought about asking if he was gay but then I thought it would be too easy. Spike’s joining me in a jack and Nam… Well she’s never really had spirits so she just said whatever I recommend.
What to choose? I’m torn. A drunken Namine could either be a sure thing that I’m going to get some tonight. Or on the other darker side of the coin she could get violent. I’ve never seen her drunk so it’s tempting to go all out and get some After Shock or even absinthe but I want to see if she can handle spirits before I start her on the hard stuff. So I settle for vodka.
I place the frothy beer and her glass of clear liquid in front of her; the vodka automatically gets her attention. ”What’s this?” She asks.
“I wish she wouldn’t bloody talk like that. Makes me think she’s talking about me.” Spike mumbles into his drink.
I shake my head and look at the vampire. “You’re older than dirt you should so know how to speak Latin.”
He shrugs at me throwing his small shot of whisky down his throat. “Never really had a good head for languages. English is ‘bout my limit.”
I shake my head at him turning back to Nam to answer her question. “This my friend is...” I pick up her small shot glass and hold it up to the light. Putting on my best Russian accent I finish with “…Vodka.”
An hour or so later the conversation hasn’t changed one iota. “Vodka!” Spike shouts in his strange Russian accent before throwing back a shot of the stuff.
“Vodka!” I echo back before doing the same.
Name and Pike are looking at us with raised eyebrows. “Ahh ha!” I say holding up another shot glass filled with black liquid. “Black vodka!”
Spike just nods and smiles at the new turn of events.
“Vodka!” Pike puts in his two cents, and a really bad accent. I glare at him followed by Spike. Pike bows his head in shame. “Sorry.”
Namine steadies herself on the table as she gets up to use the bathroom. I watch trying to hold my laughter back as she stumbles.
Spike laughs with me. “She is soooo way-shted!” He slurs.
I throw back another shot of… I’m not sure what it was that time but it burns as it goes down and leaves a nice warm feeling in my gut.
“We need food!” Pike announces.
I look to Spike and he nods. “Pizza?” I ask as I pick up my last Jack on the rocks, I throw it back before standing on unsteady feet. I throw my jacket over my shoulders and start to make my way out of the bar.
“Faith! Nam is still in the shitter!” Spike shouts at me, I stop in my tracks swaying.
“I know!” I shoot back, leaning against a table.
“Where we going?” Nam asks walking towards us.
I put in my usual simple but to the point answer. “Food.”
We find ourselves walking down the street towards the best take away pizza joint in town… well I say best, I believe the word I was really looking for is only. We get some funny looks as we walk past restaurants and other bars.
“What the hell?” Spike asks looking back to us, he has as usual been walking a few paces in front but has stopped in front of a restaurant with large windows. He points inside and we all stand transfixed to the scene within.
A big guy wearing a red shirt is standing by his table, his what I assume girlfriend stays sitting but they are both singing. It’s totally fucked up but I just can’t look away.
“Oh no!” The guy sings. “Mustard on my shirt!”
The girl buts in just before he finishes the word shirt. “Mustard! He’ll never get it out!”
He does the same, overlapping her words. “My favourite red shirt.”
“He’ll have to dry clean it.”
“How can you serve…” The guy starts.
Both the guy and girl finish by looking at the waitress and singing in unison. “Mustard!”
Pike looks at me at exactly the same time I look at him. “Now I know I’ve had too much to drink.” I comment to the two Pikes in my vision. I see him nod slowly in agreement as I turn and leave the disturbing scene behind. To hopefully be forgotten when I’m sober.
I shake my head and try really hard to make the sidewalk flow in a straight line so I can walk along it without falling over.
I see Spike turn and head into the Perfect Pizza. He falls against the door as it opens into the store. “Bollocks.” He turns back towards me as a push myself against the doorframe so I don’t end up face first on the concrete. “What’s ‘Bollocks’ in Latin?”
I think about this for a moment. “You know I’ve never found that out.” Being American I don’t think I’ve ever actually used that word.
Spike begins to stager up to the counter and Pike rushes off to the gents. To throw up or have the longest piss of his life I’m not sure which. I don’t think I really want to know either.
In the background a simple drumbeat with a guitar rhythm consisting entirely of down strums filters into my ears. I don’t think anything of it until I see Spike’s feet. Fuck he’s dancing. Well more just bobbing to the beat I’m going to have to file that away in my memory so I can threaten to tell B that he was dancing.
The alarm bells only start ringing when he begins to sing. “I left you waiting.”
Even the people behind the counter are joining in and acting like his backing crew. ”You know I left you waiting” Did I just walk into a musical?
Spike for his part slams a fist full of dollar bills down on the counter and the staff get to work even though he hasn’t actually ordered anything. “At the least could we be friends. Should have never started”
The people behind the counter all simultaneously lift there hands into the air and turn to the right so they are all at the next counter to the one they were at originally. ”Never started.”
“Aint that the way it always ends.”Spike swivels on the spot and pulls himself up so he’s sitting on the counter “On my life I’ll try today, there’s so much I felt I should say but,” His backing singers begin to join in with him. “Even if your heart would listen I doubt I could explain.” He pushes hard against the counter tucking his feet underneath him so he can stand gracefully on the counter. “If you don’t don’t know why’d you say so? Would you mean this please if it happens? If you don’t know why would you say so? Won’t you get your story straight?”
He jumps down off the counter landing on crouched knees. “If you don’t know honey would you just say so? ‘Cause I need this now more than I ever did. If you don’t know honey, then you don’t. If you don’t know honey, then you don’t.”
His singing stops but the music carries on and his backing singers continue to hum. Spike straightens to stand just as Pike comes out of the bathroom. This is the point where he begins to air guitar to the solo. Unfortunately for Spike he don’t see the table as he sides across the floor and he falls over it.
He straightens up and brushes down his jacket. “So here we are now. A sip of wine a sip of water. Someday maybe, maybe some day we’ll be smarter.” He crouches and jumps up on to the table he just fell over and I take a seat next Namine. If the show isn’t going to stop who am I not to watch it? And I’m sorry that I’m such a mess, I drank all my money could get, took everything thing I ever gave you then you never loved me back.”
He jumps down off the tabletop grabbing his pizza off the counter and makes his way to the exit. Trust it to be just as I get comfortable that he decides to leave. “If you don’t, don’t know, why’d you say so. Would you mean this please if it happens? If you don’t know why did you say so?” His back arches backwards as he sings at the top of his lungs towards the sky. “Won’t you get your story straight? If you don’t know honey would you just say so? ‘Cause I need this now more than I ever did, did.” He keeps spinning away so I can’t get hold of the pizza. I’m drunk and hungry god damnit I wouldn’t get in the way of me eating if I were you. “If you don’t know honey then you don’t. If you don’t know honey then you don’t. If you don’t know honey then you don’t.”
As he finishes his song his hands rise up as the tune slowly drains out of the background. The moment the music stops the alcohol kicks back in and he drops to the floor. Not before I’ve plucked the pizza box out of his hand as he falls. I open it up and take a slice and Spike tries to realise where exactly he is and how he got there. “What the fuck was that about man?” I ask with a mouth full of pizza.
