“Promised I wouldn’t turn you, I did... but it’s hard... ya know? Wantin’ to be with you... forever... and all that. Thought about doin’ it anyway but ‘m a man of honor... keep my word, I do. So, yeah. I won’t...”
Spike sobbed quietly, listening to Angel’s heart beat slower and slower.
“Want you to,” Angel breathed so softly that only Spike’s vampiric hearing could pick it up.
MIDNIGHT AND ROSES - CHAPTER 35
Spike thought he was hallucinating when he heard Angel’s voice.
Looking down through his tears, he saw pain-filled eyes staring back at him in sadness. Wave upon wave of hurt, sorrow and undying love washed over him through Angel’s bonding link as he stared back into those almost black eyes.
Spike was afraid.
“A-Angel... luv?”
Angel had sporadically heard Spike’s soothing words of love and had felt his gentle caresses over his body as he drifted in and out of consciousness. He had tried to reach out to Spike... his Will... but his feeble attempts to connect through their bonding link were unsuccessful.
Angel knew he was dying; there was no mistaking the mortal wound that the mad vampire, Arelleano, had inflicted. The young demon hunter also knew that when he died, Spike would eventually dust from a broken heart and he couldn’t let his lover destroy himself out of love for him.
A decision would have to be made, one that would be the hardest of Angel’s short, young life. Could he spend eternity as the childe of a master vampire or should he let himself die and hope that Spike would continue to exist? Pouring his heart out to any god that would listen, Angel prayed for enough strength to ask Spike to turn him.
The gods were merciful.
“Do it, Will...” Angel whispered, and with what little strength he had left, he pulled out the IV’s in his arms and peeled the leads to the EKG machine from his chest. As the connections were broken, each piece of equipment set off a different alarm until it all blended into one long, loud lamentation.
Spike was stunned. His thoughts raced wildly and he began to tremble as he watched Angel. He couldn’t do it... turn him... he had promised... he had sworn it.
“No! I can’t. Please, Angel... don’t ask me to... I... can’t.” Spike sobbed against his beloved. “Please...”
The congregation of humans and vampires at the back of the room surged forward at the first sounds of the alarms, each human and each vampire picking up distressing energies emanating from both Angel and Spike.
The vampires had felt Spike’s distress most profoundly and were the first to reach the suffering couple. Next, the mystics, demons and medical personnel followed, leaving dazed humans and minions behind.
All would demur to the Aurelian vampires, though, allowing them a private moment with their kin. The tender scene before Laureano and Gabriel broke their undead hearts and brought tears to their eyes.
Spike’s whole body was shaking with quiet sobs as he watched Angel weakly suckle at the wound he had opened in his wrist.
“William...” Laureano reached over and brushed a sweat soaked curl away from Spike’s eyes before he leaned over and kissed him on the forehead, then Angel.
“Angel... so brave...” the vampire prince whispered to the pair.
“Laureano... please...” Spike’s wet, sorrowful eyes pleaded desperately for guidance from his brother in blood.
“You must follow your heart, William,” the vampire prince said softly as he listened to Angel’s stuttering heart. “But, whatever your decision, you must do it quickly.”
Angel licked Spike’s wrist one last time before he raised his head and looked at his vampire with love and adoration.
“Make me yours, Will... make me yours...” Angel whispered softly, then closed his eyes and turned his head, offering Spike his throat.
There was no need for words when Spike smiled gently and gave Laureano a calm, knowing look. The vampire prince bowed his head in understanding and gracefully moved away. With the help of Gabriel and Giles, the others in the room were quietly told of the couple’s need for privacy and were quickly ushered into the adjoining suite.
Spike’s unbeating heart was breaking as he looked at Angel’s human features for the last time, trying to memorize every line, every nuance, the feeling of warmth from the body wrapped tightly in his arms. He mourned for his human, mourned for himself and for what he was about to do. A silent prayer went out to the Ancient Ones and to Angel.
“Forgive me...”
Laying kisses along Angel’s throat until he came to the slowly pulsing jugular, Spike threw open his bonding link full force, then lowered his fangs and gently pierced the skin.
“Oh...” Angel gasped softly and his body stiffened at the feel of fangs at his throat, knowing Spike was about to drain him. He moaned quietly when he felt the sting and dug his fingernails deep into the arms that were holding him tenderly, drawing blood from the crescent-shaped wounds as he held on tightly.
Spike had hardened, as he always did, when Angel would drink from him. This time his cock was so heavy, and it lay flat against his belly oozing copious amounts of pre-cum, begging for attention. The blond vampire had morphed into game face, moaning against Angel’s throat as he pressed his erection against his lover’s warm body, each mouthful of blood making his cock jerk and drip more as he swallowed.
Angel was drifting farther and farther away, enveloped in glowing, intoxicating warmth. He could feel his heart start to stutter as he floated closer and closer to nothingness and he had no fear. He could feel Spike... his Will... soothing and reassuring him over their bonding link that they would meet again soon, bound to each other for eternity.
Demon!Spike was enraptured. How he had yearned for Spike to take the human as his childe and finally complete the bond between them. He couldn’t control himself as his sharp fangs pierced the soft, yielding skin at Angel’s throat and he moaned. He drank... deeply, pulling in the essence that was Angel, even as he shuddered and came against the big man's body, marking him as his own.
“Mine!” Spike growled softly as he listened to Angel’s heart stutter weakly, then stop.
“Yours...” Angel sighed with his last breath.
