A Mothers Love

Lonnie fixed the small slayer with a glare; Vikki had had Lonnie, Jaeger and Axel sit in chairs in her office while she prepared the vaccinations. Now Lonnie had no idea what those were exactly but after her stint in the hospital and knew she would forever hate needles.

So now she glared hard at the younger woman who had gently injected a series of medicines into her children and given them candy.

Sitting patiently she watched as Vikki filled the syringe with a vaccine. Hell who knew so many diseases existed. When she blanched at the first image of the needle disappearing into her vein she swore then and there to make sure Buffy heard just how much she hated this appointment.

Unconsciously growling at the school nurse she only felt a little bad over the look of sympathy on eh woman’s face.

“There all done.” Vikki said with a smile. Trying not to fully take in the hateful looks from her three patients.

“Don’t I get a sucker?” Lonnie snipped sarcastically. Vikki smiled pleasantly and held out a large bowl of assorted candies. Lonnie reached in and pulled out a purple sucker before standing and letting her children walk out in front of her.

They all walked unsteadily in there new shoes, everything had been taken in stride, the languages, homes, no hunting…course she was close to talking Buffy into letting her come along on a slay. But the worse by far were the tight confining shoes. Her own sneakers were new and she stepped awkwardly in them, Axel got away with these little slip ons and Jaeger took her shoes off whenever they were away from Buffy.

Lonnie wouldn’t tell her mate that because she did the same thing. Stepping down the stairs she moved closer to the wall as the bell rung and slayers began pouring out of the doorways.

She had never known so many people existed in the world. But it was obvious she was wrong, there was so much she didn’t know and she was eagerly reading each night. So far she had made it up to third grade reading level…whatever that was but Willow seemed pleased by her progress after only a month.

Sighing she bent and picked up Axel who squealed happily. Smiling down at her daughter she led them back to there hut…house…it’s called a house. Walking up to the porch she realized something was different.

Setting her son down she walked in front of them and opened the door softly, unprepared for a giant tangle of white legs and tongue to attack her.

Stumbling back she got her bearings and looked down at the dog. It was like the ones she had told Buffy she wanted. Large, narrow head and long pointed ear. A Great Dane. Smiling down at the black and white fur she dropped to her knees and eagerly rubbed the dog’s fur.

“Do you like him?” Buffy asked softly walking towards her mate. Lonnie looked up and Buffy held back the smile of utter relief at the joy across Lonnie’s face. That smile was harder and harder to get these days.

“Yes I love him. What’s his name?” Lonnie asked holding the animal back so the two children could gently reach out and touch him. The dog eagerly licked Axels face while Jaeger stroked the dog’s ears.

“I thought we could all decide that.” Buffy smiled at the look of appreciation on Lonnie’s face. She wasn’t stupid or blonde; she knew how hard this all was on her. It had to rougher on Lonnie and the children because when she got sent back she at least had some inkling of how things went but not Lonnie.

“How about…Todd?” Buffy smiled at the suggestion, lately the trios favorite movie was ‘The Fox and the Hound’…she could have killed Andrew for showing Lonnie how to work the television., now it was near impossible to pry the woman away at times.

‘Delicate state’ or not if Andrew showed Lonnie one more thing that got the woman obsessed she was going to deck him. Smiling she decided the name suited the big puppy. She had hardly been able to believe that Todd had been a puppy when shed picked him up from the breeder; the dog was as tall as Asher in wolf form. True Asher was short by skin walker standards he was still a good sized wolf.

Smiling she turned and brought out the bowls and collar for the dog. Walking up to the dog she gently fastened the collar and showed the children the tags. “See, this will tell people who he belongs too if he gets lost.”

Jaeger smiled and Buffy laughed when Axel eagerly let the dog wash his face. She knew normally this would gross her out but right now she didn’t care.

Standing she led her mate inside and let the children take Todd out to show off and play.

*************************

Ryan lay in the bed, a cool swear broke out across her body as she shook from the tremors. No this wasn’t Moon Fever, this was a real fever. She fought off sleep as Remy sat beside her and carefully fed her soup.

“Is it getting worse?” He asked softly. Ryan shook her head even though she knew it was a lie. And truth be told…he knew it was too. “Maybe we should…find a doctor. Maybe threes something they can do.” He said hopefully.

“You know there’s not Remy. Ill be okay. Really, you know after a few days it passes.” Ryan’s eyes burned and she barely held back a wave of nauseous. “Are our things packed?”

Remy nodded mutely. It had been a week since he had went to Skye. But the wolf hadn’t shown. Sighing he turned and looked at his sister, he hoped she got better faster this time.

“I’m going to go load up the truck.” He said. He may only be nine but he was strong for his age. Stronger than most skin walkers, side effect of his dual parentage.

Ryan nodded weakly and watched him leave, closing the door softly she listened as his footsteps faded.

Standing up wearily she waited for a wave of dizziness to diminish. Standing she went to the locker and pulled out a small messenger bag, opening the locker she emptied her medicine bottles into it. Sighing angrily she pulled out a bottle of valium. Pain killers…swearing softly she flung the bottle angrily across the room.

It wasn’t fair, finally after all this time someone wanted her and she couldn’t do it. It wouldn’t be fair, shed known her fate for a long time and had made peace and then walked in Skye.

Skye with her impossibly blue eyes, Skye with her laugh and smile that made Ryans cold heart warm, Skye with her infuriating grin. Angrily swiping away a tear she piled her medications into the small bag. Turning when she heard the doorknob turn, she realized at the last minute that it wasn’t Remy.

It was a wolf. Stiffening when she saw Skye mother, Raya walk into the room and stare at her.

“What do you want?” Ryan snapped. Feeling unnerved by the woman’s calm unwavering look, she didn’t sense any hostility or immediate threat.

“I want to know what happened to my daughter.” Raya took a slow step towards the tiger. She knew better than to get to close, a threatened animal was in many ways ten times worse than anything you would ever encounter.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ryan said turning her back on the wolf. She felt her hair bristle and ears lay flat when she heard the faint growl coming from the alpha.

“You’re lying. Tell me now.”

“Or what!” Ryan snapped. She didn’t like this one bit. She wanted to be left alone so she and Remy could leave. She waited fro the wolf to answer but instead Raya looked around the room.

“You’re leaving?” Raya turned back with a surprisingly shocked expression on her face. “You can’t leave. You’re my child’s mate.”

“No. I’m not.” Ryan want prepared when suddenly Raya flew across the room and had her pinned to the locker, she gasped in pain.

Raya pulled back and stared at het tiger. That shouldn’t have hurt the cat.”Whats wrong with you?” she asked, taking in the sweaty brow and small shivering from the tiger she had missed at first.

“Nothing just a cold.” Pushing her off she bent to retrieve the bag but she was to slow, Raya snatched and bag and stepped back and opened it. Pulling out a handful of medicine bottles.

“You’re a junkie?” Raya asked with a not of disgust.

“NO. Just…those are mine put them back.” Ryan stared at the medications, she couldn’t lose them she didn’t have enough money to buy more and wouldn’t for awhile.

“Tell me why you won’t take my daughter…and I will.”

“Look. I cant I would I if could but really I can’t. I have to leave just…I know you don’t like me just trust me. Its better that I go.”

Raya mulled over this, true she didn’t particularly trust this stranger but she was her eldest daughter’s blood mate and therefore family by default.

“You’ll break her heart.” Raya knew this was true, Skye was in love with the tiger, why she hadn’t a damned clue but the heart wants what it wants. “I can’t tell you what to do…BUT if you change your mind. You and your brother have a home with my pack.”

Holding out the bag Ryan snatched it and watched as Raya left. Sighing deeply she dropped to her knees.
