Giles thankfully sank down onto his living room sofa. While the trials were far from over, what with having three Immortals underfoot -- in addition to the normal, everyday events to beset his charges -- the t oft of the latest crisis to hit Sunnydale had passed. One thing he wasn't certain of, was how the 'Watchers' of these Immortal visitors were going to effect everything. Having amateurs underfoot was going to get someone killed -- he was certain of it.
He paused and reconsidered. Could these people be considered amateurs, he wondered? He simply wasn't sure. If he and Buffy had still been associated with the council, he'd have asked them for assistance. He really was out of his depth here. He ruefully suspected, however, that even the council wouldn't be able to help him. His was the first slayer he'd heard of to have friends and -- associates. Slayers usually fought alone, the good fight being accomplished by a young girl and her watcher only.
He shook his head. This way was better. Even with all the mishaps, shenanigans, and irritations, this small group of friends -- growing larger by the minute it seemed -- was far better equipped to handle the things that went bump in the night -- and so was his slayer -- than any previous slayer in recorded history. That made him proud . . . proud and touched with just a little awe.
He shook his head, laughing at his own thoughts. It had been a *very* long week. Angel and company had left for LA just that morning, leaving well before sunrise. The standing argument had continued until the doors of their car closed and they had driven off.
Doyle had told Cordelia about her impending Immortality after all, and she was scared.
//Well, who wouldn't be?//
He had to laugh, though. Both Adam and Richie had frowned when they found out, and one Miss Cordelia Chase had gone off, telling them both off in no uncertain terms. Giles, watching from the sidelines and keeping his mouth out of it, had noticed that both Adam and Joe had gotten a kick out of it. He couldn't help but wonder, however, whether or not Cordelia would transition well -- when the time came. While he could, quite readily, see her protecting those she cared about, he couldn't quite see her making that final swing to sever another person's head from their body. It had served to make him introspective most of the day, kept him apart from the jubilation of most of the others.
It had been later, after another overheard conversation, that he'd finally begun to relax -- to hope that she'd be able to make it in her new world. He'd walked out of the mansion -- God only knows why they'd all stayed there the rest of the week -- right into the middle of Joe and Adam's conversation.
"She'll make a good Immortal," Adam said quietly, "as long as she gets a good teacher."
"We could always send MacLeod," Joe replied.
Adam's eyes widened comically. "I thought you liked him?"
Joe frowned, his confusion spreading across his face. "What? Of course I do. What has *that* got to do with anything?"
"You do realize she's going to be a stubborn . . . insistent student don't you? She'll be wanting to know the 'why' of it all the time."
"Oh!" Joe said, a considering look coming over his face. "What about Amanda?"
"Gods! You want to bring about the end of mankind, don't you?" Adam asked, horror coloring his voice. With those two together, we wouldn't stand a chance."
Joe just chuckled warmly. "I still say she'd make a good teacher for her."
"Yeah," Adam conceded, "but just what would she teach her?"
"Good point."
Adam's final question before Giles had moved away had been confusing. He hadn't understood it then, and didn't understand it now, but if this 'Amanda' person was who they were thinking about getting to train Cordelia, then he was going to do his damnedest to find out all he could about her. He paused. He just had to figure out how to do that with nothing more than a first name to go on. Of course, he had time. It appeared both Adam and Richie would be staying awhile. Perhaps Richie knew who Amanda was. If so, it just might be possible to get him talking about her.
He wasn't so sure about Adam. He had a sneaking suspicion that the Immortal wasn't exactly as he presented himself. What he *was* certain of, was that Adam was older than he was letting everyone believe. He just didn't know how that was going to play out, and whether or not the Immortal had secrets that would endanger them all.
Giles once again shook his head, attempting to clear his thoughts.
Of course, Anya would be coming hoomoromorrow. Who knew what would happen then. He certainly didn't envy Xander the task of bringing her up to speed on everything she had missed. The ex-demon probably wouldn't ever let him out of her sight again -- for fear that something *else* bizarre would happen. Picking up his tea, Giles brought it toward his mouth when a thought hit him suddenly, and he wondered if she would be able to handle the changes, the increased risk. It was no secret than Anya didn't like danger.
His heart ached for Xander. Even he could see how deep in the relationship with Anya Xander was. It had become apparent during the time the whole town had lost their voices, and it had only grown since then. If Anya left the boy -- no, young man -- Giles was fairly certain Xander would be devastated. Setting his cup back down without tasting the tea, he rose slowly. **No sense borrowing trouble ahead of time,** he thought as he turned out the lights and headed to bed. For now, it was enough that both he and his charges had survived another week on the hellmouth. Everything else would take care of itself -- with a little help from a suspicious, nosy watcher.
The End
(for now)
I hope you enjoyed the ride. I'll begin posting the sequel in a few days. It's still a WIP, so the posting of it will take longer.
