Xander froze and clenched his mug tightly. Turning slowly he faced Blair his heart pounding in fear.
“H...H...H...How?” Xander stammered
Blair watched him as Xander’s hand started to shake spilling coffee all over his hand.
Xander dropped the mug and cradled his scalded hand. He stepped back away from Blair defensively when Blair took a step forward to help him so he froze in place. All it would take was one more step back and Xander would end up falling down the stairs behind him.
Blair kept his voice calm and consciously slowed his heart rate to try to keep Xander from bolting. “You reacted to my heart beat from the bathroom and when you realised there wasn’t an attack you scented me to find out what was wrong.” Blair watched Xander’s reaction to his words closely “Last night you use a heightened sense of touch to check on my injures.” Blair glanced behind Xander as Spike arrived to stand at the top of the stairs. Blair relaxed slightly. He doubted Spike would let Xander fall. “Most of my life work is on humans with heightened senses, from wine tasters with one or two senses heightened all the way up to sentinels who have all five heightened.” He glance quickly from Xander to Spike and back again. “You have all five don’t you? Is Spike your Guide or is it Tara?” he asked gently.
“Guide?” Xander asked confused his voice shaking. “What’s a Guide?”
Blair gaped at them for a moment before he recovered. “Um.. Basically a...a guide helps a sentinel to use their senses properly. They can help them focus them properly and pull them out of zone outs.”
“Zone out?” Xander leaned back against Spike shakily.
“A zone out is when you focus on one sense to much and go into a form of a trance, it can last from a few minuets to a few hours if the sentinel isn’t brought out of it quickly enough. You would only realise what had happened after your brought out of it, Manly due to the missing time.”
Blair watched as Xander’s legs slowly gave out from under him.
Spike quickly grabbed him and spun him round to face him. Xander tucked his face into spikes neck and shook silently whilst Spike held him gently rubbing his back.
Spike gazed at Blair scowling in annoyance before scooping up Xander and carrying him down the stairs and running across the lawn and into the main house Blair following behind.
