The consequence

Thanks to katus kajou and Jiall for the reviews, its great to hear what you think!

Jiall I know what you mean and there may be others interested later (especially around the time the curse comes out) but I promise it wont be men or demons by the dozen!

Word spread through the demon community like wildfire. A slayer had killed an innocent. Some talked of "the victim's" position with the mayor and just what he was doing so close to the bolt hole of one of the majors less than human enemies and others suggested that he was looking for an alliance with the slayers.

Either way what he got was a stake happy brunette.

Spike listened to the latest reports reserving judgement until he heard from Cruz.
Most of the minions he had gathered since his return were total rubbish but this one had promise. For one thing Cruz still had half the brains he died with (unlike the majority of fledges) for another he actually had taste in music nicking a few choice CD’s when out hunting one night.

Turned at twenty and with almost half a century experience on top of that Cruz was a valuable asset to his budding court. Boys sire had been a right piece of work, and distantly related through the line, but not overly bright and had been dusted by a mob some fifteen years previous. Cruz had travelled and eventually heard word of Spikes return to the Hell Mouth and decided to offer his services. Cruz was ruthless and determined but his experience with his sire had taught him not to be noticed so he was not afflicted with the same need to destroy the world that show-boaters like Angelus are. Happy to be at the masters right hand Cruz was quite the planner which nicely complemented his reaction action style. Cruz had kept them below the slayers radar so far.

Spike nodded his head to Cruz giving him permission to begin and putting both feet up on the table docs clunking onto the heavy wood as he made himself comfortable.
“Well?”
“Both Slayers aren’t dealing well master spike. A stable slayer is trouble, but easily managed. An unstable slayer on the other hand… well at the moment there is no telling how they will go” Cruz flicked the few strands dark hair that had escaped from the leather tie out of his eyes “We are as prepared for all eventualities as possible.” Cruz sighed and stood. “If I’m not needed further, I will be going hunting”
“Very well mate, I’ve business to attend to this evening so while you’re out why don’t you pick me something up? I’m in the mood for Chinese”
Cruz nodded and with nearly identical swirls of black leather the two swept from the room.

“Xander why do you think that you could possible reach Faith! There is no connection between you two!” Buffy shot Xander one of her most frustrated looks, one he was quite familiar with.
“Exactly Buff. I don’t have the background you and Faith have, you know she’s really not big on the authority so Giles and Wes are out and Faith and Willow don’t really see eye to eye” Xander gave Buffy one of his most dazzling smiles “So that leaves me”
“Xander, Faith is quite a troubled young lady. What you are suggesting is very dangerous.” Giles began polishing his glasses for the fifth time since the conversation began.
“Xan you don’t have any special powers keeping you safe!” She moved up in front of him “I can’t let you do this!” Buffy took his hands in her own, squeezing gently “I need you safe”
Willow smiled up at Xander and added her own pale hands on top of theirs “We’ll figure something out soon I promise!”

Xander knocked on the door. Wondering if he really was this stupid to be here with no back up, hell no one even knew he had come. Briefly wondered what the girls would say if they knew. What he really thought that he could acheive.

He broke out of his thoughts when Faith opened the door looking out at him expectantly.
“Want somethin’?”
“Just to talk Faith” He stepped into the dingy room facing away for a moment gathering his nerves. “I want to understand what is going on with you”
Faith rolled her eyes “Understand this donut boy being a slayer means I can do anything I want.” She knocked Xander’s feet from under him and he went down heavily. She straddled his legs.
“Like now I can use you in anyway I want, See?” She smirked rocking her hips back and forth. enjoying his discomfort “Nothin’ you can do ‘bout it” She twisted his wrists together pressing them over his head into the floor. “Still want to save me?”
Xander didn’t hesitate to answer “Yes.”
Faith narrowed her eyes “Do you really think you can”
“Yes, but you have to let me...”
Faith leaned her body heavily onto his crushing the air from his lungs “Exactly! I told you right now you can do nothing…” her hands slid around his neck “But I can do anything I want”

Spike lent against the dingy motel wall of downtown Sunnydale apartments smoking a cigarette. Not a bad brand, might have to steal them again next time.
He hears movement and looks up. Raises one eyebrow and blows smoke into the face of the night manager “Well?”
“Yep he’s here room 7” “Suggest you steer clear of 3. Slayers in there”
Spike looks at Mitch expectantly “I’m gunna need a key mate”
“OH! You are welcome to enter the rooms of downtown Sunnydale apartments Master Spike”
Spike Stubs the butt of his cigarette into the counter “Ta”.

Xander fought back but he knew he had no where near the strength to match hers.

Spike wandered down the corridor towards room 7 but the thought that he probably has enough time to kill her tonight, he owes her after all, has him detouring to Faith’s room.

Xander struggled to focus thoughts and images flying through his head one after another, his family, Jesse, Cordy, Giles. One image stuck in his mind Buffy and Willow smiling at him as he told them he wouldn’t face Faith alone and how they had relaxed thinking he would be safe. Then he shuddered as he pictured their faces tomorrow when they saw his body.

Then one last image as his brain struggled for oxygen enough to make sense of what was seen through eyes blurred with tears. Spike in gameface grabbing Faith from behind, draining her dry and throwing her body to the side like garbage.

And wasn’t it strange that as he faded out he thought he heard Spike; a vampire, telling him that he was safe now, that the slayer; protector of innocents, wouldn’t hurt him ever again.
