Chapter Two
Woodbridge, Virginia
Xander sat up, swung his legs over the edge of the bed and put his head in his hands. He hoped today wouldn't be another day of fruitless searching. He'd had his memory back for nearly a month, and still hadn't figured out what the hell was going on.
Jason slipped down the alley leaving the dead body behind. Whoever ran this N.I.D was stepping the game up. They were no longer trying to capture him. Oh, he had no doubt if they had the opportunity they would. But now they'd just as soon kill him. That was the third spook he'd had to kill in the last week.
New York and the Bourne identity had proved to be a bust. But he knew he was Jason Bourne. Having nothing left to go on, he was headed back to the motel to crash. The condo listed on the driver's license had turned out to be as fake as everything else. It was looking more, and more like the Xander Harris id was real. But to be that deep under cover, had to be a result of Meduesa's meddling.
Jason sighed at the shadow he'd picked up. He had better things to do than be mugged. He ducked into the next doorway, and waited for his assailant.
He was startled when the hand shot out of the dark yanking him from his hiding place. He twisted in the grip, dropping to the ground, surprised at the strength behind the hold. His attacker was a lot stronger than he looked. Not much of a fighter though, he thought as he traded blows with the man for a moment. Still, the strength behind the blows made up for it. Jason slid back towards the alley, he couldn't take the man out in full view of the street. Just as he reached the dark cover of the narrow passage between buildings, the man changed. Jason had to fight the urge to freeze at the sight, instinct moving him past the intial surge of fear. What the hell was it? Before he could even think the man was lunging. Jason rolled with the blow, tossing the man over his head. By the time Jason flipped back to his feet the man was on him, and he hit the wall across from him hard. His head rang, as he slid down the wall. He reached out blindly trying to steady himself, hand grasping onto the lid of an abandonded crate. Some instinct took over and when the creature reached for him again he reacted. Snapping a piece off, and thrusting it at the creature.
As the darkness overwhelmed him, a shower of dust rained down.
Ever since he'd gotten his memory back he'd been trying to figure out who was after him. He knew it couldn't be Medusa, though still responding to Bourne's memories it had been a little hard to shake off that idea. He'd had time to think, though. Despite his first panicked thought that it was because he'd stolen the rocket launcher, he knew it couldn't be that. Even if this weirdness started the night after he'd stolen the launcher, it wasn't likely the U.S government would be sending black ops teams after him for something like this. And if that Riley and Walsh character weren't part of a black ops group, then Snyder really was a Ferengi.
He'd decided his best bet was to go to ground, until he could figure things out. With a sigh, he stood pulling on his jeans and a t-shirt. With Bourne's memories fading, hacking was becoming harder and harder. Xander couldn't help the smirk as he shut the apartment door, 'cause even as bad as he was becoming it would still make Willow frog green. He sighed at the thought of his Will's, he still hadn't called to let the guys know he was all right. But he couldn't risk leading whoever these guys were back to them, especially with their lethal methods. The guys wouldn't know how to deal with things like that. He climbed onto the bus, unaware of the dark green Benz following at a distance.

Jack waited until three or four people had entered the library before he followed the kid inside. He'd spent the last three weeks searching for Harris, and the last week trying to figure out how to approach him. He knew the kid was jumpy. He had reason to be with the N.I.D after him.
Jack frowned; he had yet to figure out why they were after the kid. He was a seventeen year old boy from Sunnydale, California. He knew the D.R.I had a base there, but hell they had a base at all the major demonic hot zones. Sunnydale was just one of many in the U.S., it wasn't even the largest one. That was in Bangor, Maine. Either way he had to get the kid to trust him before something worse happened to him; they could figure out what had happened later.
Xander booted up the computer, after he'd gone over the various escape routes from his position. He was always doing that now. Bourne's instincts really weren't just Bourne's anymore. The instincts were now a part of him; he was torn about the memories fading though.
Bourne's life hadn't been a pleasant one: the insomnia, the headaches, all of those were fading too. The sooner the better in his opinion, but Bourne was cool and he liked being Bourne. Just without all the badness. It was bad enough knowing about the nightlife, now he had to worry about spooks.
He logged onto the Lone Gunmen Forum. He'd been posting his questions, and checking the various theories for the last month. Some of them were wacko's especially that FoxyLady; alien abductees, black oil people, one-armed russians, and a cigarette smoking man. Man, that chick needed therapy. Xander began to search through the replies on his thread about the Initiative. He'd almost given up, the majority of them were useless, when he came to JReveryman.
Re: the Initiative and government spooks
Hey, I'm pretty sure the full title is Demon Research Initative. They've been in existance since the 1940s at least. Not much is known about them as the government denys all knowledge of the supernatural.

Xander grinned at the signature, it appealed to him for some reason. Bourne's memories translating the Latin, towards the light. An good attitude to have when fighting the baddies. Xander clicked on the poster's public profile. The details where sketchy but the id wasn't something that had just been set up. JR had been a member for over three years now, and had made several posts. Xander noted that they had a yahoo, and msn messanger. He clicked on the yahoo smiley, and sent off a quick message.
Re:the Initiative
Hey, I know about the things that go bump in the night, and evidently you do as well. What do you know about government spooks.
Jack was skimming through the most recent threads at the Lone Gunmen forum, when the IM popped up. He was surprised the kid had responded so quickly, and directly. He'd expected to have to exchange a few more posts on the thread before getting to this point.
JReveryman: a bit. used to be one technically. was a researcher.
Xmanbourne: know anything about the N.I.D?
JR: some. they're not exactly the branch you want to get involved with. not strictly speaking legal either.
Xb: haven't really got a choice. them or someone like them has got tabs on me. no idea why. any idea if there's an head honcho to chat with?
Jack sat back with a worried sigh. He'd been hoping the kid had some idea what the N.I.D wanted with him, but that was obviously not the case. And he definitely wasn't used to government dealings if he was thinking he could just talk to whoever was in charge, and that'd be the end of it. Not if he'd caught the N.I.Ds attention. Poor kid, despite whatever had happened to him, he still thought at least partially like a kid.
JR: sorry to say it doesn't work that way with these guys. if you have something they want, they're relentless. your best bet is to find out what they want and give it to them or get yourself a stronger ally.
Xander groaned dropping his head onto the monitor. While that was useful info, he had no idea what they wanted. Xander glanced at the clock, he'd been here a little under an hour. It was time for him to clear out.
Xb: thanks for that. don't know where I'd get an ally that'd go up against the N.I.D. but that helped.
JR: check back with me in a few days. I might be at a desk but I might know some old contacts.
Xb: all right. later.
Xander signed off, and slipped out of his seat. He checked the area again. Then took the side entrance away from the library.
