Buck Waters
“Buck Waters”
“ ‘Scuese me.” Buffy said as she brushed past a man in sea green scrubs. He mumbled something in return and continued moving around the hospital. Buffy never did like hospitals they always gave her the wiggins. Without fail something bad always happened when she was in one. Delicate shoulders were tense, and heightened senses were constantly on the alert. Everything in this place screamed death, and as a slayer death was around every corner. The last thing she needed was to have it screamed in her general direction. (Well the last thing she needed was to be killed and let the whole world down, but that screaming death thing was defiantly high up on the list.) She stopped in front of a door and looked at the number displayed next to it. “337” Buffy read aloud. “This is it.” She exchanged glances with Xander who she brought along for company and a little humor, that was, after all, what Xander was for. A little comic relief, not to mention donuts when the gang went into research mode.
Buffy knocked on the door and peaked her head through. “Hello.” She said in a tentative voice as not to wake the girl if she happened to be asleep. “Can we come in?”
The girl sat upright in the slender hospital bed, with the remote in her left hand while her other arm was in a cast that had been written on in multi-colored inks. “Ah, the essence of friendship.” Xander mused to himself as he peeked in behind the shorter blond in front of him. The girl was somewhere around sixteen years old, around the age Xander was when he figured out that all the things that went bump in the night did more than bump they bumped, boomed and howled. She had light brown hair and bright green eyes, with an attractive face.
“Sure, you can come in.” the young girl was not only pretty but kind as well.
Buffy and Xander walked into the girl’s room to see that she was alone, which Buffy decided was probably best that for the type of questions she was about to ask the girl that would probably be best. “Hi, I’m Sandra Coefeild, and this is Buck Waters and were from the channel 4, do you think that we could have a moment of your time?” Buffy surprised her own self when that came out of her mouth. She had no idea where it came from but now that it was out she had to either go with it or seem very stupid. And since it was nearly nightfall she decided door number one would be her best bet. She did, however, happen to glance back at Xander who was now giving her the most confused look she’d ever seen her friend put on. She shrugged with her eyes and sat down when Rachel said. “Sure nothing better to do around here.” She clicked he button on the remote and sat back. She watched Sandra and Buck move around the room sliding chairs to sit in front of her bed.
“So,” Rachel began, “ what is it you wanna ask me?”
“Well we just wanted to ask you a few questions.” Sandra said.
“What no notepad or nothin’?” Rachel asked.
“Uh…” Sandra exchanged worried looks with Buck, who was just as intrigued as to how Buffy was going to pull this off as she was. “Look in your back pocket.” A voice that sounded like her own said to her. Buffy tried hard to hide the confusion she was feeling from showing itself on her face, but it was a losing battle. Reluctantly she heeded and reached around to the back pocket of her jeans. She lost the battle with her face completely when she felt the small pad tucked safely in her pocket. She almost lost it when she felt the pencil tucked neatly behind her left ear that she was sure wasn’t there a second ago. “Okay this has way surpassed the comfy level of weirdness” she said to herself. She pushed through it. “Info now crazy talk later.”
Buffy smiled at Rachel, “Here it is.” She said with a chuckle, “Now, I’ll just ask you a few questions and I’ll be out of your hair.” She put the pencil to yellow lined paper. “Can you please describe for me the attack that occurred last night.”
“It happened so fast, it’s all a blur.” Rachel said, Buffy could understand that. “But I’ll try.” Rachel thought for a moment as if trying to sift through jumbled thoughts, then began to tell the story. “Me, Lacy, and Michael were in the park last night, and we heard a sound so we turned around, Lacy said it was just the wind, but then we heard it again, but it was like closer this time. Then all of the sudden he was attacking us.”
“He.” Sandra repeated, “It was a male vam…” Buffy caught herself, there was no need to scar this girl for life, more so than she already was anyway. “Whoever it… was.”
“Yeah…” Rachel said slowly giving her a weary look. “It was a guy.”
“Do you, by any chance remember what he looked like, as in hair color, eyes color, what he was wearing.”
“Uh…platinum blonde hair, piercing blue eyes,” As she described Buffy was already beginning to draw a picture in her mind but she allowed her to continue, “He was wearing a long leather jacket, dark red shirt, boots.”
“And you’re sure about this?” Buffy asked trying to get any evidence that it wasn’t who she thought it was.
“Yeah, I couldn’t get him off my mind last night so I drew a sketch of him if that helps any.” Rachel suggested as she leaned over to the bed stand beside the bed.
Buffy glanced over to Xander who looked as if he had the sketch already drawn out in his mind and didn’t need to see it. Buffy could only hope that there were more than one leather clad, blond vamp running around Sunnydale. Those hopes were dashed to the rocks when Rachel produced the composite sketch of her attacker. Right down to the deadly sparkle in the yellow eyes, the man on the picture was none other than William the Bloody, or Spike as he’s now better known. “You’re quite the artist.” Buffy commented the girl as she handed the paper back to her.
“Thank you.” Rachel said with a smile and a slight blush, but the smile soon faded, “Lacy used to say that too.”
Buffy frowned and stood motioning for Xander to do the same. She really hated to leave on that note but she really had to go, sun was going down and she needed to make sure Xander was home safe before she paid a certain someone a little visit. “Well thank you for your time, and your cooperation.” She said, “Get well soon, and I’m sorry for your loss.” “I’ll do everything in my power to dust that undead who hurt you too.” she wanted to add but she caught herself, she actually hoped deep down that Spike wasn’t that undead she silently swore to dust.
They said their goodbyes and Xander barely managed to wait until the door was closed behind them to speak, “Yes.” He pumped his fist.
“What’re you so giddy about?” Buffy asked.
“Isn’t it deliciously obvious, we finally have a reason to kill Spike.” Xander was really never exactly a fan of Spike, sure he came in handy but that chip in his head hadn’t stopped his clever comments that made Xander burn on the inside with even a hint of jealousy.
“And that’s a good thing?” Buffy asked.
Xander gave her a look like he was genuinely confused.
“Look, all I’m saying is that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions just yet.”
“This coming from the girl who was much with the conclusive jumping just last night.” She told herself.
“Well all I’m saying is that if it looks like Spike and it bites like Spike…” he trailed off with a “duh” look on his face.
Buffy finished the quote in a low voice, “It must be Spike.”
“Exactly.” Xander said. “And one more thing.”
Buffy turned to her friend, “What?
“Buck Waters?”
