Chapter 3

“Oh dear….” Giles said removing his glasses and cleaning them. We all looked at one another; we knew this as a sign that he was upset.

“What is it Giles?” Willow asked.

“Well, it appears I’ve just stumbled across a prophecy...”

“God! Do these things ever stop?!” Xander exclaimed as he slammed the book he had been flipping through closed. We had been cataloging Giles’ books for his departure back to England when he had made his discovery.

I sighed tiredly. “What does this one say?” I asked.

“Well, now….” He said, as he looked at the book closer, reading silently to himself. We all waited.

“Well?” Dawn asked impatiently.

“What? Oh yes. My apologies. Well, it’s a tad difficult to decipher actually.”

“As most prophecies are, go figure.” Xander said sarcastically.

I glared at him to be quiet. “What does it say Giles?” I asked. And he read aloud:

“Two great forces shall come together both the Chosen One will dread
but should they convene, the Beast and the Queen, one will end up dead.
One will come with death on its heart and impossible to see,
not very kind with one thing on its mind among your midst will it be.
Older than time, nigh impossible to kill, this Beast shows naught its true form,
but once in a while under Meztli’s bright smile it sets out to do harm.
If found and coaxed it will help but at a price one must pay,
it will take from you a Warrior true for the heart will have its say.”

And as he finished reading, he looked up into our dumbstruck faces.

“Yeah, because that’s oh-so-understandable.” Xander mumbled sarcastically under his breath.

“Well it doesn’t have to be. I mean, let’s try and break it down.” Willow offered helpfully.

“Good thinking Will.” I said, receiving a smile. “So what’s the first line again?” When Giles read it, we all sat thinking for a bit.

“Okay, so apparently two Big Bad’s are going to come to our lovely town and I’m not going to like either of them.” I began. “But they’re obviously not joining forces against me because the prophecy says that if the two of them meet one another, they’ll try and kill each other. But what about the second line? Does anyone have any guesses as to what it’s alluding to?”

“Oh! One’s an invisible creature that’s here to kill.” Dawn offered, receiving some odd looks. “Well it says it comes to kill and it will be among us but we can’t see it; so I thought maybe it’s invisible.”

“Ok, so we think we may be dealing with an invisible monster and a queen of some sort. What about the next part?” Willow asked. “Well it seems to reiterate the first part, and I have no idea what a Meztli is… so finding out why her smile makes this thing go on a killing spree won’t help us.” Willow said after a while of brainstorming. “Next part?”

“Ok, so if we can find this thing and convince it to help us it will, but we have to give it a warrior’s heart?” Xander posed his idea unsure.

“No, not a warrior’s heart, the line says it will take a warrior because the heart will have its say; and in the first line it says it comes with death on its heart. So…perhaps we will lose someone to this thing's killing in order to get this stronger warrior?” I offered. We all sat in silence as we wondered who the warrior that was to die would be; no one wanted to say out loud who we all were thinking – me.
