End of Chapter 2
Synn nodded watching as the only constant in her life gathered his things and left her alone. Alone, it seemed that more often that not she was alone these days. Glancing down she flipped open the file and started studying her latest prey.
Chapter 3 – Only just The Beginning
Synn Colton kept her gaze on the building just at the end of the block. From her perch she had a perfect view. Ready to go her weapon stood ready her scope already fixed on the building so when her prey’s car pulled up everything was ready to go. Today was the day she earned the second half of her fee, two weeks after her initial meeting with Lindsey McDonald. Two weeks had passed since their meeting and she found she could still remember his smile.
Over the years Synn had never really gotten involved in the world around her. While her actions at times greatly impacted the lives of others she had very little contact with others in an intimate manner. Part of it was the way Adrian trained her after he became her guardian.
Every part of her life was scheduled even vacations served a purpose in one manner or another. While other kids her age were out parting on a Friday night she was either following a mark or planning the execution of a job or she was training. Dates never fell into the equation.
Adrian didn’t stop her from dating but a week here and there wasn’t really conductive to relationships and she chose not to indulge in one night stands. Sometimes she indulged in a little flirtation but that was all it was flirting.
During a job in Russia when she was 16 she changed, Adrian really couldn’t explain it nor did he try he just called her special. Special she could move faster than the demons she came up against, and hunting her prey seemed to come naturally. Not to mention the handy dandy accelerated healing which actually she liked. Not to mention her increased strength and agility that in her line of work came in quite handy indeed.
The sight of a decked out SUV pulling up to the building alerted her that her target was exactly where he was meant to be. The waiting was over, after two weeks of trying to pin down Varrik at a location that would be suitable she finally had to make due with tonight’s little meeting at Angel Investigations.
Apparently Varrik wasn’t happy with Wolfram & Hart either and decided to meet with a private investigator in regards to his problems. A smile touched her lips as she watched him enter the building, when he came out he would be finished.
Slovaski was one of those men who thought he was a big player in the underground when in fact he was the lowest form of bottom feeder preying on his own kind. He sold women and children on the black market for a few bucks not to mention the various other enterprises he engaged in. No one would miss the man.
Ten minutes had passed when the door opened her mark emerging moving inline for a perfect shot, from the expression on his face his little visit hadn't gone well. Never wavering as the man came storming out of the building she paused her finger squeezing the trigger as a man followed him out blocking her shot. Luckily Slovaski shoved him giving her the perfect shot, and with a slight increase of pressure on the trigger she displayed her talent as a marksman.
Lowering her weapon she slid it over her shoulder and set off on her escape route not even bothering to watch the body hit the floor, there was no doubt she had hit her target. One thing she learned never linger get the job done and get out.
Wesley Windham-Pryce stood staring like an idiot at the gaping holes oozing blood that flowed like black molasses from the chest of Varrik Slovaski. One second he was escorting the gentleman or rather half-demon out of the Hyperion to the street, as he ranted about how he was going to get them all for turning down his case.
Just after Varrik shoved Wesley in the chest forcing him back a step or two the man’s chest exploded. Varrik stared down at his chest for a second the two holes exactly where his two hearts were located, and then he crumbled toward the street. Before Varrik even hit the floor Angel was barreling out the doors. His dark gaze swept Wesley then he set off across the street without a word.
Angel stood in his office watching Varrik Slovaski storm out Wesley hot on his heels making sure he found his way outside after they turned the man down. The half-demon wished to hire Angel Investigations to help him it seemed he was on the outs with Wolfram & Hart and knew that Angel had faced the firm and lived to tell about it. If it had been anyone but Varrik Slovaski he might have helped them, but in truth the man deserved what he got.
Varrik Slovaski was the worst sort of person demon or human. He made his fortune selling his own kind into various types of slavery, and as long as it made him some money he didn’t think about how his business affected anyone around him.
Just seconds after they exited the building he heard it two shots, even though the gun used was modified with a silencer he heard the shots spurring him into motion. Wesley had followed Varrik out.
Once outside he instantly saw that Varrik was mortally wounded and that Wesley was fine, it was then the scent hit him, and he couldn’t believe it a Slayer. That meant that Faith was on the loose and that she chose not to redeem herself. Without thinking he crossed the street following the scent.
Cordelia Chase came running out of the Hyperion to see what the hell was going on. One minute she heard Angel’s voice raised then the door to his office slammed open and a robust man came barreling out the door Wesley following right behind him. After a few seconds Angel flew out of his office almost knocking her off her feet as he headed out the front door. So of course she followed him outside because so far things had been rather slow.
Once outside Cordelia stared at Wesley and the man lying on the floor besides him, and Angel no where in site.
“Yuck, I take it we get to clean up the lovely mess.” Cordelia sighed, they couldn’t very well leave a human, demon half-breed lying outside their place with two massive holes in his chest, it would just attract all the wrong attention.
They stared at each other for a second. Then with reluctant groans began to pick up the body before anyone noticed.
Angel made his way through the alleyway the scent providing him the perfect tool to track Faith. The Slayer scent was strong and he moved on instinct without thinking his prey was moving along the roof top of the building on his left. He could make out a shadow but nothing more and damn she was moving fast. Then in a move he didn’t expect she sailed off the roof in a move that would do any Olympic gymnast proud and landed in a crouch on the floor just ahead of him.
He caught a glimpse of dark hair pulled back in a ponytail and moved forward sailing in the air arms ready to tackle his prey to the ground. Only he found himself hitting the pavement as his prey rolled away from him, and he was left staring at two black combat boots, and his gaze lifted and he realized his mistake that this Slayer wasn’t Faith and she certainly wasn’t Buffy.
“Not really in the mood for a Vamp tonight lucky for you.” A softly accented voice filled the void. He couldn’t determine the girl’s origin as it was as if several accents were blended to create this unique one.
As Angel moved to get up a booted foot slammed into his face sending him sprawling on his back. “Be a good boy and stay down.” There was a mocking tone to her voice and he growled unable to ignore the challenge or rather blow to his ego. The girl whirled and took off down the alley.
As he rose to his feet as he moved to follow and he knew without a doubt that this was a Slayer, which meant a Slayer had fallen. Oh God, Buffy. Just as the thought penetrated his mind he caught a glimpse of the girl in a dark SUV, and managed to catch the license plate. As he watched her go he pulled out his cell phone, and dialed a number he knew by heart and preyed that he would hear her answer. She couldn’t be dead she just couldn’t.
Synn Colton tossed her cell phone into her purse having reported to Adrian that the job was done. LA, was a strange town it held such evil in both human, and non-human forms but it also held such appeal in other areas. Just walking down one street you could see the polar opposites of good and evil. Evil, some would consider her to be evil since she killed for a paycheck. Until recently she had never really questioned what she did or the consequences of her actions, she just did what came naturally.
Then came the dreams sometimes she had dreams that just shook her to the core. They were never clear and she dismissed them, but lately they were becoming more vivid and were telling her that something was coming. That she was on the wrong path.
Shaking her head as she turned she sighed pushing aside thoughts that she would rather ignore. There was one path for her eventually she would have enough to retire especially if things continued on at this rate.
Pulling up to the hotel she parked and headed up to her room. Instead of taking the elevator she took the stairs, tonight she had energy to spare.
Walking toward her room she pulled out her key, tossing her bag on the table she was heading toward the shower, when the phone rang.
Rolling her eyes she walked over and picked it up.
“Yes?” She asked, not in the mood for chit chat.
“Miss Colton, its Lindsey McDonald I have your final payment.” His voice was exactly like she remembered.
“You’ll need to contact Adrian to collect the payment.” Synn replied not happy at all about the client showing up unexpectedly at her hotel. Just one of the few reasons the clients never met the operative.
“I did, he said it would be alright if I just dropped this off to you.” Lindsey smiled into the phone, Adrian wanted their contract but he had to practically twist the man’s arm to get him to bypass his usual rules.
“Fine, but I will come down to you.” Synn replied slamming down the phone.
Lindsey smiled, and slid his cell back into the pocket in his suit, she was something.
Synn grabbed her key, and purse and headed back down to the lobby, she was going to kill Adrian.
Angel let out a sigh of relief, he had never felt such despair as he had in the past few minutes as he waited to hear her voice.
“Buffy.” He managed trying not to sound to distraught.
“Angel?” Buffy replied gripping the phone, it had been sometime since they last talked and he knew nothing about Riley.
“I just needed to hear your voice, I met someone tonight well not actually met but rather ran into, is Faith still in the hospital?” He knew he sounded all over the place but he really couldn’t help it the thought that Buffy might be dead had thrown him for a loop one he obviously hadn’t recovered from just yet.
“What’s wrong Angel.” Buffy asked brushing back a lock of hair as she sat up on her dorm bed wondering what was wrong with him.
“I don’t know how else to say this, I met a Slayer tonight.” Angel replied, “It wasn’t Faith.”
“Faith is still in a coma.” Buffy reassured him but then again she hadn’t checked on Faith lately since starting school, and even less since she started seeing Riley. “Are you sure she was a Slayer?”
“Yes.” Angel responded softly. “I know a Slayer when I meet one, I got her license plate and am going to track her down, and can you call Giles?”
“Yes.” Buffy responded. “Be careful Angel.”
“I will.” Angel put his phone away and backtracked toward his office. By the time he returned Varrik’s body was gone, as were Cordelia and Wesley. Picking up the phone he called Kate and gave her the plate number.
Glancing up as Cordelia and Wesley came in he knew they were not pleased.
“You owe me a new pair of pants and a bonus.” Cordelia snorted. “That was defiantly not in my job description.”
Wesley glanced over at Angel and raised a brow. “What did you find?”
“Not what I expected.” Angel slid the information over to Wesley. “Do you have any contacts at the Watcher’s Council?”
Wesley shrugged, “A few why do you ask.”
“Because our assassin is a Slayer,” Angel met Wesley’s gaze.
“Dear God is Buffy?” Cordelia gasped.
“Is fine, Faith may be dead.” Angel filled them in on what little he knew and the one lead they had on the new Slayer.
“Let me get started on this.” Wesley sighed walking over to the computer. “I may have to call Willow for some assistance.”
“Whatever it takes but we have to find this girl.”
