Settling In

Spike walked briskly down the high school corridor, a muscle twitching in his jaw. He opened the main office’s door and stepped inside. An overly made up middle aged woman wearing way too much perfume greeted him.

“You must be Mr. Giles.” She said to him.

“Yes, I am. Where is Buffy?” Spike questioned.

“She is in Principal Snyder’s office. I will let him know you are here.” She informed him.

She returned to her desk several moments later, “You can go in now, first door on the left” she pointed in the direction he needed to go.

Spike opened the door to reveal Buffy sitting on the opposite side of a desk from where a little man, presumably Principal Snyder, sat.

“Ahh, Mr. Giles? Please have a seat.” Principal Snyder motioned to the chair vacant next to Buffy.

“What are YOU doing here?” Buffy asked.

“Your sister is in court and could not come.” Spike answered.

“You’re not my father. I don’t know why he had to come.” Buffy huffed.

“He is your legal guardian, Miss Summers. I can see that she treats you with such a lack of respect. I’m not surprised she is a trouble maker here already in her first week. Mr. Giles, you need to take a firm hand to children like this.” Snyder scolded him.

A brief vision of smacking Buffy’s bum flashed in Spike’s mind. He swallowed hard.

“Excuse me, Principal Snyder but what exactly did Buffy do?” Spike questioned.

“I caught her trying to leave school grounds. We do not tolerate that in this school.” Snyder answered.

“Buffy? Why were you leaving school?” Spike looked over at her.

“I just had to leave. I was coming back. I just needed some…air.” Buffy responded.

“Simply unacceptable!” Snyder yelled.

Spike ignored the little runt of a man and implored Buffy to tell him more, “Buffy? Please…I just want to help.”

Buffy teared up, “One of my teachers…she was wearing the same perfume that Mom always wore and I couldn’t breathe, Spike. It was just too much. I just needed some time.” Buffy hung her head.

“Sweet heart, it’s O.K.” Spike reached over and embraced her.

“Well, isn’t this display of affection quite lovely?” Snyder sneered.

Spike swiveled back to Snyder, “Listen here you git, I believe you and your staff here were told that Buffy just recently lost her mother. This girl isn’t making trouble; she is simply mourning her dead mother. I would tread very carefully, in the future, in dealing, with my sister n law, Mr. Snyder. Good day, mate.” Spike said, standing up and pulling Buffy along with him.

“How dare you!” Snyder scoffed.

“I dare!” Spike replied and walked out of Snyder’s office, Buffy in tow, practically grinning ear to ear now at Spike’s lashing out of Snyder.

They reached Spike’s car and he unlocked the door and helped Buffy into the passenger seat before walking around and getting in himself. They drove home and upon turning off the ignition in the driveway, Buffy turned to Spike and touched his shoulder, stopping him from getting out of the car just yet.

“Spike…thank you for coming and for standing up for me.” Buffy told him.

“You’re welcome, Buffy” Spike turned and placed his hand over hers as they stared into each other’s eyes.

It happened so fast. One minute they were just looking at each other and the next, Spike’s fingers were tangled in Buffy’s golden tresses, pulling her face to his. He pressed his lips to hers, kissing her softly. Buffy returned the kiss with enthusiasm, causing him to become more demanding and deepen the kiss. Buffy reached up and twined her arms around his neck as he devoured her mouth. Soft moans escaped her as his tongue battled for dominance with hers.

In the near distance a car door shutting sounded and Buffy pulled back abruptly. Looking in the rear view mirror, Spike saw Cecily’s car behind his in the driveway and her walking up to his car. Thank God for the dark tinted windows he had on the Desoto. He was pretty sure she hadn’t seen anything.

He looked over at Buffy who was smoothing down her hair, “I’m sorry, Buffy. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Spike opened his car door and got out, greeting Cecily, “Hey, luv, we just pulled in right before you.”

“So, what did she do?” Cecily narrowed her gaze as Buffy got out of her side of the car.

“Nothing, luv…she was just thinking of her mum and needed some time alone and that Snyder fellow is a stupid git anyway. I set him straight.” Spike replied.

“I’m sure you did.” Cecily rolled her eyes and turned to walk into the house.

Spike’s shoulders slumped in relief at her retreating back. He turned to look at Buffy who stomped by him towards the house.

“That little girl will be the death of me” he sighed.

Spike paid the babysitter, Harmony, who had watched Dawn while he went to deal with Buffy at school and then walked her to the door.

“Thanks again, pet.” He said.

“Oh, you’re welcome Mr. Giles. Anything I can ever do to help you, just let me know.” Harmony batted her eyelashes at him.

Buffy watched the nauseating display of Harmony flirting with Spike from the hallway and then retreated to her basement.

An hour or so later, Spike came to tell Buffy that dinner was ready. Buffy hated dinners at the Giles home. They all sat around the tables on pins and needles because of Cecily. It was stuffy and awkward but what could she do?

Once the meal was almost finished, Cecily finally spoke, “Try not to get kicked out of school, Buffy because if you do, it’s your money that is paying to send you away to private school. Not mine.”

“Cecily, dear, Buffy didn’t do anything wrong…she” Spike tried to tell her what had happened but Cecily just cut him off, dismissing him as usual.

“Spike, when I want your opinion, I’ll ask for it. Wait, I’d never want your opinion.” She said haughtily before leaving the table. She didn’t even bother saying goodnight to her daughter.

Once she was gone, Dawn climbed down from her chair and went over to her father and climbed up into his lap, “Daddy, I want your pinin. You can tell me.” She said sweetly.

Buffy’s heart gushed as she watched Spike hug Dawn.

“I’ll help clean up.” Buffy said standing and starting to clear away dishes.

Thirty minutes later, Buffy washed the last of the pans as Spike dried.

“Thanks for all your help, pet.” Spike said.

Buffy remember him calling Harmony pet and a lump of jealousy settled in her throat. She turned to him and put on her fake sex kitten routine, brushing up against his body she said, “You’re welcome Mr. Giles. ANY thing I can do for you let me know.” She purred, running her finger down his chest. Spike’s eyes grew wide as the bulge in his pants started to grow as well. In a split second, Buffy turned and was gone though, leaving him standing there like a fool, a dish towel in one hand and a hard on starting to tent his pants.

“Bloody hell” he swore.
