Arrangements
When Spike awoke the next morning, she was gone. He hadn't even gotten her name. She had sat with him and held his hand all night long but he never got her name.
The morning shift nurse came and checked on him and brought him some clothes to wear. The Red Cross had donated items for the victims of the accident. It was just a le ple pair of jeans and a t-shirt and some underwear. He dressed and waited for his check out paperwork.
He was cornered at the receptionist area by several police officers who asked him several questions about the accident which he answered perfunctorily. He was then given the information for the coroner's office where he would need to go and make arrangements for Drusilla to be flown to where she would be buried seeing as they were from out of town, the one officer told him.
Spike hadn't even thought about that until now. He was somewhere in mid-america...a small town in Indiana. Dru and him had been going to California to start a new life. One of many "new starts" for them. They had left their last rental house in Washington D.C. and packed most of their meager belongings and started across coun aga again. They were going to get jobs and a place to live once they got to California. Just like they had done in every town they "started over" in before.
He didn't even have a place to fly her. He didn't know where to have her buried. They had moved around so much and neither had any family to speak of. He just nodded at the officers and took the paper they had written the coroner's address on.
He left the hospital and wandered around a bit, until he came to a gas station. He went in and bought a pack of cigarettes and a liter of beer. He walked a few blocks more until he found the building the coroner was housed in, next to the police station.
He sat down on the curb by the street and lit a cigarette, opened andk a k a few swallows of his beer. Several minutes passed and a cruiser came by and turned into the driveway next to him. An officer got out and came over to him.
"Umm..Sir...you can't drink that here." he informed him, pointing to his beer.
"Why not? I'm not driving." Spike questioned.
"It's against the law to be intoxicated in public, Sir." the officer stated.
"Well then, it's a good thing I'm not intoxicated." Spike said and took another swallow.
He was itching for a fight. A fight with a cop would be even better. It would land him in jail and then he could just rot away. He had nothing left to lose. What did it matter?
"Sir, I'm serious. I need you to give me the beer and move along..." the officer said.
"And if I don't?" Spike threatened.
"Sir, I don't want to have to arrest you but.." the officer started but was cut off.
"There you are! I've been looking all over for you. Come on. You're needed inside." came a female's voice from behind him.
Spike turned to see the woman from the hospital coming towards him.
"Is he with you, Miss?" the officer asked her as she approached.
"Yes, Officer. His dead wife and my dead husband are inside that building." Buffy said pointing to the building behind her. "Would you like to arrest him before or after he can make funeral arrangements?" Buffy said edgy and pointedly, staring down the male officer, twice her size.
"Oh...you guys were in that accident? Oh..God..I'm sorry...I didn't realize...I...hey..it's O.K. I'm sorry...go on inside...no harm done.." the officer backed off.
Buffy helped hoist Spike up off the curb and walk him up to the building.
"Thank you." Spike said softly, coming to his senses finally.
"You're welcome." Buffy replied.
Neither had to explain their actions. Buffy knew what Spike was trying to do and Spike knew why Buffy "rescued" him from doing it.
"Hey?" Spike said.
"What?" Buffy responded.
"What's your name? I figure, seeing as you keep coming to my aide, I should know your name." Spike asked.
"Buffy." she replied.
"Spike" he said pointing to himself.
"Spike...I've been sitting in the waiting room here for the last two hours. I can't bring myself to go in...and....see...him...by myself. Can you come to my aide now?" Buffy asked, emotion welling up in her.
He looked at her a long time before saying, "We'll help each other."
They both turned back towards the building and slowly walked inside.
