Three

Three< /br>< /br>
Joyce couldn't quite fathom the truth yet. Still, the truth was sleeping on her couch so there was no denying it. Sure, she had been afraid when Michael had shown his true face to prove his point to her, but all in all she thought she had handled the last 24 hours pretty well. Living in Sunnydale for little over a year now, the existence of vampires wasn't the biggest shock to her. It actually explained a lot of the things she couldn't explain before. No, the real shock was that her daughter was a supernatural demon fighter. Of course, that fact in itself also explained a lot. Buffy's attitude change in L.A., her bad grades and strange connection to the librarian but it all still seemed very unreal to her.
< /br>< /br>
Their mother-daughter talk over breakfast that morning had been open and it gave them back some of the connection they had lost. Joyce was still in awe of the things her little girl had gone through without being able to share any of it with her mother. She was without a doubt a strong girl and now she was ready to help the very thing she was meant to kill.

Buffy had been very reluctant all day long to help Michael but Joyce's instincts had told her the vampire was being honest and had no ulterior motives. So after much persuasion, Buffy had called mister Giles arranging for him to come by that afternoon. He was supposed to help them figure out a solution. Before that though, she had to make a call to Principal Snyder. Organizing Parent Night was certainly not one of Buffy's priorities and Joyce would help her daughter with her calling any way she could.

Giles rang the doorbell at the Summers' residence. He was very curious about what he would find inside. Buffy had been extremely confusing in her phone call. He gathered that her mother had found out about her slayer calling and apparently she had been told by a vampire in need of her help. She also told him something about Parent Night at Sunnydale High that he just couldn't place.
< /br>< /br>
Joyce Summers opened the door looking stunning as always with a big smile on her face and a drying cloth in her hands. She ushered him in and led him through the house to the kitchen where Buffy sat at the kitchen bar and a strange man was doing the dishes. They seemed to be laughing about a joke he had just made. When they noticed him, the man dried his hands and then spoke to him.
< /br>< /br>
"This must be your Watcher then." The stranger said with an upper class London accent before he stretched out his hand which Giles took to shake. As he encountered cool room temperature flesh he pulled his hand back. This was apparently the vampire. With Buffy he should have known. A vampire doing dishes in the Slayer's kitchen, now he had seen it all.
< /br>< /br>
"Would you like a cup of coffee, mister Giles?" Joyce asked.
< /br>< /br>
"I think a cup of tea would be better for me right now if that is at all possible." He asked the older Summers' woman before turning to the younger. "Could you explain to me again what is going on?"
< /br>< /br>
The stranger spoke again before Buffy did. "I think I would be better suited to do that. We have been waiting for you so I would only have to explain the full story once."
< /br>< /br>
Giles took the cup Joyce offered him and motioned with his other hand for the vampire to proceed.
< /br>< /br>
"Right now there are a few things I know for certain. I am a vampire, she is a slayer and you are a watcher. I know how to tie my shoes, I know how to do dishes and I know how to shower. I know how to use a telephone and I know how to talk in I believe three different human languages and a few demon ones too."
< /br>< /br>
He went to sit at the kitchen island next to Buffy.
< /br>< /br>
"However I don't know my own name or who I was before I was turned. I can't remember how I got to Sunnydale and I can't remember what I did before I came here. I have no memories of learning how to tie my shoes, how to do dishes or how to use the telephone. I know that England has a Queen but I can't remember my own mum. I have knowledge of how to decapitate a 'Gniona demon but I don't know whether or not my Sire still lives."
< /br>< /br>
He took a deep breath to steady his nerves and the shiver in his voice.
< /br>< /br>
"I woke two days ago on a park bench here in Sunnydale. Even through all the uncertainties, two things were very clear to me. One, I felt very bad about being a vampire almost as if I regretted all the killings I must have undoubtedly done. Two, if I feel remorse then I can not feed and if I can not feed I can not stay among demons for they wouldn't react kindly to a weaker being. That conclusion led me to you, Slayer. I was hoping you could help me regain my memories because of the 'enemy of my enemy' principle."
< /br>< /br>
Giles took of his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose in a gesture of thought and then cleaned them with his handkerchief.
< /br>< /br>
"Well, that is a very interesting story and very compelling indeed. If it is true! Would you mind if I ascertained that little fact with a spell?"
< /br>< /br>
Michael answered with a slight smile. "I would be worried if you believed me without it, Watcher."
< /br>< /br>
Giles simply nodded. He grabbed the salt from its place above the stove and filled a cup with water. Then he plucked a few storks of sage from the herbs in the windowsill and asked Joyce for a candle and some matches before putting the sage on a small plate. He sprinkled the water around him and then used the salt to create a circle. Giles sat down in the middle of the circle placing the plate with the sage and the candle in front of him.
< /br>< /br>
"Sage of wisdom, < /br>
Sage of truth,< /br>
I burn this candle,< /br>
I burn thee earthly presence. < /br>
Let the smoke and flame mingle< /br>
To be the messenger of the horned god.
< /br>< /br>
Sage of wisdom,< /br>
Sage of truth,< /br>
Show me a liar in this room."
< /br>< /br>
He lit the sage and the candle and watched the smoke from the herb mingle with the flame to create a deep green mist. The mist started to twirl and made its way from around his head to Joyce, then over to Buffy and from there over to Michael. All the while the mist stayed a deep green and when it finished its track around Michael's head it returned to the flame where it dispersed in a wisp of grey.
< /br>< /br>
"It would seem he was telling us the truth and that leaves us with a dilemma. Seeing as you are the Slayer, Buffy. I think you should be the one to make the decision if we are going to help him or not." Giles spoke before blowing the candle out.
< /br>< /br>
Michael turned his eyes towards the Slayer, who gave him a slight smile. "What is it you Brits say? 'In for a dollar, in for a million.' It would be nice to do something constructive instead of destructive for a change. But I don't think you sleeping on our couch would be ideal. I'd like to see the sun in my living room every once in awhile."
< /br>< /br>
Giles looked up at that. "I am sure we could find a more accommodating spot back at my flat." Michael answered with a friendly nod after he had glanced at Joyce to get her approval. Giles got up to leave through the backdoor, waiting for the vampire to follow him into the night. "Joyce, thank you for the wonderful tea and Buffy, I expect to see you Monday afternoon for training in the library."
