Chapter Three

Buffy and Spike reached the secret doorway to the Initiative complex. His attacks were becoming more frequent and Buffy was freaking out. She would have done anything to fix him. They pulled the trap door open and climbed down into the darkness. They had brought flashlights with them.

The place was dark and creepy. Old rotting corpses of daemons and long dead soldiers littered the floor. “My God,” Buffy said, “they just left them all.”

“The med lab should be this way,” Spike pointed and they started to walk down the dark corridor.

Something moved behind them and they heard a growl.

“Guess things aren’t as dead as they seem down here,” Spike said. And another attack hit him. He fell to his knees as something jumped from out of the darkness and attacked Buffy, knocking the flashligrom rom her hands. Spike yelled her name as the pain in his head got worse and he couldn’t move. He started to sink into unconsciousness.

Buffy fought off the daemon. She rolled around on the floor with it and somehow her hand found a discarded piece of metal on the floor. She jammed it into the daemon’s eye and it collapsed on top of her. She pushed it’s body off her and ran to find Spike.

Buffy found him barely conscious on the floor. “Spike! Please, baby, don’t die on me. Hold on.” She started to cry. He tried to say her name, but he couldn’t even get the word out. Just then lights flooded the room. A dozen Initiative soldiers stood on a platform above them. Riley was among them.

“Riley?” Buffy didn’t know if she should be relieved or not.

Riley motioned for his soldiers to stand down. “I got your message. Looks like you need help with your pet vampire.”

“Riley, it’s the chip. It’s killing him.” She couldn’t help the tears running down her cheeks.

Riley motioned for some of his men to take Spike. “Check his chip and report back to me.”

Riley went to stand next to Buffy who was reluctant to let the men take Spike anywhere without her. “They’ll look at him.” He watched Buffy wipe the tears from her cheeks. He couldn’t believe she could have feelings for that thing. “Buffy, he’s just a vamp. Why don’t you just let us dust him?”

Buffy’s jaw dropped. “Just a vamp??? Spike is NOT just a vamp! He’s—“

“What, Buffy? Better than a real man?” Riley said it bitterly.

One of Riley’s men came up to him before Buffy could answer.

“Sir, the chip is deteriorating. At this rate, it will kill him, possibly within the hour.”

Buffy felt her knees get weak and she felt like someone had punched her in the stomach. “What can we do? Please, Riley.” Buffy was terrified.

“Are you sure you want to save him? Buffy, he’s a daemon, he’s an animal.”

“He’s not! You don’t understand! He got his soul back, for me.” She started to cry again. “Please, Riley, help him. I can’t live without him.” When she said that last part, she realized it was true. She didn’t want to be here without Spike.

Riley looked at her. He was angry, bitter. He wanted to shake her. He knew she’d never felt this much emotion for him. “We can remove the chip or we can just repair it. The choice is yours.”

“Take it out. Please, take it out, now.”

“Fine. But know that this is the last time you can ever call me, Buffy.”

She nodded her head.
