Interlude
Spike sat at the bar throwing back shots of Jack Daniels. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Buffy and Wood come through the door. The place was pretty packed. He watched them find an empty table and take a seat. Spike watched Wood pull out Buffy’s chair for her and behave all gentlemanly. Stupid ponce, he thought and swung back another shot.
There was a silence as the music on the jukebox stopped and then it started again with the new person’s selections. The music drifthrothroughout the place.
Been trying so hard just to talk to you, haven't heard half of what you want me to
I hurt so bad over where we've been, don't know how not to go back there again
I know what I want to say, can I get it through to you now in some other way?
Like there was this woman and there was this man
There was this moment they had a chance to hold on to what they had
How could they be so in love and still never see?
Now nothing could be sadder than this woman
This woman and this man
Spike groaned as he listened to the words of the song. He swiveled around in his stool and watched Buffy. Buffy was keenly aware of Spike as soon as she walked into Mac’s. She was trying to pretend she didn’t notice him until that damn song came on. She teared up a bit as she listened.
A stranger’s eyes in a lovers face, see no signs of a better time and place
Have we lost the key to an open door?
I feel the need to reach out to you even more
It's a circle we're going round
If we don't get us out from under it's going to take us down
Like there was this woman and there was this man
There was this moment they had a chance to hold on to what they had
How could they be so in love and still never see?
Now nothing could be sadder than this woman
This woman and this man
Spike’s eyes met Buffy’s across the crowded room and their gazes locked.
For all we've got to lose so much to gain
If we come this far and leave it behind
There's only you and me to blame
Like there was this woman and there was this man
There was this moment they had a chance to hold on to what they had
How could they be so in love and still never see?
Now nothing could be sadder than this woman
This woman and this man
“Buffy, are you alright?” Wood asked her seeing the tears forming in her eyes.
Buffy breaking her gaze from Spike replied, “Yes. Just, the smoke is getting to me.” She lied.
“You want to get out of here?” Wood asked.
“Yeah, let’s go” Buffy stood and grabbed her purse and jacket and walked towards the door, Wood following right behind her.
Spike watched the two leave the bar. His heart broke even more. He hung his head and swiveled back around and ordered another round.
Now nothing could be sadder than this woman
This woman and this man
