Chapter 3
Buffy moved quickly, packing light. She did manage to throw Mr. Gordo in at the last minute, slamming the lid shut on her suitcase. She didn’t have a lot of money, but she gathered all that she could out of her penny bank. With that and the money in her purse, she thought she would have enough to purchase a one way bus ticket to somewhere.
The letter was the hardest part. But she felt she at least owed Dawn that much.
Dear Dawn,
I’m sorry, for everything. Mere words cannot express how much I love you, and how sorry I am. But I have to leave. I just can’t stay here anymore. I know you won’t understand, but I hope you can try.
Please know that I am okay now. I did a stupid thing tonight. I tried to give up. Never give up, Dawnie, it was wrong of me, and I’m glad it didn’t work out. Running away now might seem to you like a form of giving up, but please know that is not what I am doing. Instead, I’m accepting my life again. But here I am living in shadows. My former self has ceased to exist here, and I need to find “her” again. I need to find “Buffy” again, and I can’t do that here.
Remember when I said to you, “The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it?” It is so hard for me right now here in Sunnydale, Dawnie. But I want to live. I know that now. So I have to leave in order to live.
I will come back, and I will be in touch. I’ll write you when I get wherever it is I’m going.
Please be sure this jacket and sweater get back to the girl in the hospital, Room 208. I took them from her closet.
I love you, Dawnie. Be safe. If you don’t want to stay here, then please go to Dad. I’m sure someone here will forward my letters to you.
Buffy
Buffy left the letter to Dawn on top of the clothing on the kitchen table. Then she grabbed her suitcase and headed out the door. She wasn’t surprised to find Spike coming up the sidewalk.
“You okay, Slayer?” He looked truly concerned, and Buffy was chagrined once again.
“I’m okay, Spike.” She continued to walk down the sidewalk, the vampire keeping pace at her side.
“You leaving?”
She didn’t answer him right away. Then she stopped and looked at him. “I need your help, Spike.”
“Anything pet, you know that.” He grinned wickedly at her. He wanted to her her into his arms and comfort her, or scream and shake her for her actions of earlier. But he knew she didn’t want that, nor need it. Her demeanor had already improved. She was on a mission, he could tell. And he was glad for it.
“I have to get away from here for awhile. I need you to protect Dawn while I’m gone, and patrol and s. C. Can you do that for me?” She gazed at him, her face of stone.
Spike swallowed, glanced down at his shoes, then back up into her eyes. “I made a promise to a lady a long time ago, I made a promise to you to protect Dawn, and I always will. Patrolling is part of that.”
She smiled at him, and they started walking again.
“Can I ask where you are going?”
Buffy paused again as they approached the bus station. “I’m not sure, to tell you the truth. Wherever the bus goes, for now.”
“Do you have money?”
“A bit,” she said.
He pulled out his wallet and handed her a few bills. She didn’t reach out to them, and he smirked. “They’re from Giles, if that makes you feel better.” As soon as the words passed his lips he knew it was stupid of him to mention the Watcher’s name. “Damn, I’m sorry.”
Buffy blanched at his name, and she tightened the grip on her suitcase. Spike put the money back in his wallet, and returned it to his duster’s pocket. “They are all still at the hospital, you know. Unless they’ve discovered you are missing, which is a distinct possibility by now. If you are going to go, you better get. I’ll deal with the fallout for you.”
Buffy nodded at him. “Thanks, Spike. For everything.” Then she turned and entered the bus terminal. Spike didn’t wait to watch her leave. He was still kicking himself for mentioning Giles’ name. His anger seethed again. He would protect Dawn, and he would patrol the Hellmouth for Buffy, but he made no promises where the Watcher was concerned.
Spike slowly walked back to the house, and wasn’t too surprised to see Giles’ car parked out front. He gazed into the front window and saw the gang gathered around the kitchen table, reading the letter Dawn held in her hands. There were many tears all around. Except for Giles’ face, Spike noted. His face was a mask of emotion, hard and still. He was clenching his fists at his sides. His eyes met Spike’s through the glass window. Spike smirked, and held up two fingers, then he turned and stalked off into the night. It was time to finish patrol.
