Chapter 26
Faith’s POV
I land in a heap on the floor with Pike on top of me, I push him off gently and crawl over to Namine’s limp body a few feet away. I roll her over onto her back, the white hair changed back to her usual dirty blonde. I see her chest rise and fall with her breathes and I feel my heart slow.
“She okay?” Pike asks rising to his feet slowly.
I nod gently. “Yeah, I think so.” I scoop her body up into my arms and walk her to our room, gently laying her down on the bed. I push a strand of stray hair out of her eyes and lean down and kiss her forehead.
I stand raising my head to the heavens, thanking whoever was listening back in that cold room. I rub my tired eyes as I walk back into the kitchen, lighting a fire before sitting down at the table opposite Pike.
“What the hell happened?” I ask.
Pike shakes his head at me before he speaks. “To be totally honest… I really don’t know. We came back here after you went charging off, she wouldn’t say one word to me. She stormed into the house grabbed some stuff and locked herself in your room for about half an hour before she came back out… her hair had already gone but her eyes were okay…” he trails off as he stands to place the kettle on the fire. “…I asked her what was wrong, if she was okay but she still wouldn’t speak so I did what I could… I followed her, she rode full out back to where you ran off then got off the horse and walked the rest of the way.”
“I guess she must have known I had been captured, a spell or something I guess.” I say trying to fill in some blanks.
“Yeah, well whilst she was walking… the sky went grey, it was like the sun got blotted out for a while… it started to rain but… it was the most fucked up thing I have ever seen and you sure as hell know I have seen some freaky shit in my time.”
I nod and motion for him to carry on.
“The rain… it… it didn’t touch her at all, it was like there was this force field around her stopping it, every time a drop hit the force field thing sparks would come off her, bright blue sparks… and then she started floating… fucking floating… a foot off the ground, moving, gliding or something and I got freaked… and I mean really freaked.”
“But you carried on following her?”
“Faith… I was scared, she was scary. But I kept going, it was like my head told me to stop but I couldn’t, my feet just kept going. Then there was lightning, no thunder just lightning and it hit her… it kept hitting her smack in the middle of the top of her head, bright red lighting cracking and hitting her, it was like she absorbed it.”
I let out an amused snort. “She was charging… she was seriously charging, shit…”
“What?”
“Nam has always told me that charging to your full capability is not a good thing, things… when you have that much power in you, you just cant control what is going to happen…”
Both Pike and I ignore the irritating whistle emitting from the kettle. “So… what does this mean?”
“This means… I have no idea what is going to wake up in there.” I say motioning to the bedroom.
“What is going to wake up??” Pike asks with a scared look.
“Yeah… look… Nam has never gone that far before, she lost herself in the magic… completely. Plus she killed a guy, plus practically killed all the other guys in there, no matter how much she tells herself that they were evil people they were still people, you can’t get away from that…” I trail off getting lost in my own sad and depressing past.
“Been there have you?” He keeps doing that. Am I just am open book and I’m the only one who can’t see that?
“Yeah.” I stand and go over to the kettle taking it off the fire. I don’t have to look at him if I’m making a drink. “Whole word of bad after all of that. I don’t really want to go into it.” I turn steaming mugs in hand.
He nods and accepts his drink. “That’s cool.” Not a usual response he usually wants to know everything. I’m very grateful that this time he just lets it slide.
I put my cup down on the wooden table. We sit in silence for a while sipping the hot drinks in front of us.
“You ever wonder what we would be doing right now if we didn’t come here?” I guess he’s in a philosophical mood now. Stepping away from crazy homicidal Faith is always a plus.
“I try not to, I’m guessing my life would be a whole world of not good if I didn’t get brought here, I wasn’t exactly heading in a healthy direction back on earth if you know what I mean.”
“I guess I can imagine, I don’t know what I would be doing… same old shit I guess…” he pauses for a few seconds. “I wonder what she would be doing…”
“Nam?” I think on that for a moment. “I guess it doesn’t matter right? We’re here now, what exactly can we do about it?”
Pike finishes off his drink with a big swallow. “Don’t tell me you haven’t thought of going back.”
I avert my eyes, staring at the wooden table. “I have, but… I don’t want to.”
“But you do need to.”
“How do you do that?” I ask.
“Read your mind? I don’t… maybe I’m just in tune with shit… I can just read people sometimes.”
“Do you have to read me constantly?” I ask with a smirk.
“You know I only do it to annoy you.” Back to the usual banter, good… cant be doing with all this deep shit after what happened today.
There is a long silence between us and the sun has long since set when I hear a small groan from my bedroom. My eyes flick to the doorway then back to Pike. He’s not exactly had a brilliant day he’s been scared shitless more than once. “Go to her.” I wish he’d stop doing that.
I do as I’m told and disappear into my dimly lit room. Nam has a look of pain on her face as she holds the palm of her hand against her forehead. “Hey.” I say in a low voice. I’m not too sure how much power is still in her so I don’t want to startle her.
She slides her hand to the side of her face and cracks one eye open. “Hey.” She’s smiling slightly; she pushes herself up into a sitting position on the bed. “When did you get back?”
Would answering that question with ‘when you teleported me here’ be a good response? “A couple of hours ago.” I’ll go with vague, that always works.
She suddenly sits bolt upright in the bed. “What happened with Abbas?”
She doesn’t remember? That is going to make this so much easier. I take a seat next on the side of the bed. “He won’t hurt anyone again.” I promise. It’s not a lie, in no way did I say that I killed him. I just didn’t say who did. Like my loophole?
Her hand closes over my forearm. “You sure?”
I can still hear him screaming in my head. “Yeah, pretty sure.”
She nods in relief. She clutches her head again and her eye twitches. “When did I fall asleep?”
“Not that long ago.” I coax her to lie down again. There is no way she’s had enough rest. “You go back to sleep. Everything’s going to be okay.” I pull the blanket up to her neck. “I promise.”
“Stay with me?” I’m so fucking whipped it’s scary. I nod in response and walk over to the other side of the room closing the door and I begin to get read for bed. “Didn’t you hurt your knee?”
I look down at my fatal mistake. Since she healed me in my cell I haven’t had any problems with either my knee or my shoulder. I think her mojo might have cured it. Not sure how I can explain that without telling her exactly what happened. “I knocked it. Must have put itself right.” It’s not likely that she’s going to swallow that one. I’m counting on the fact that she feels really drained and has a headache. I’ll deal with when she thinks about it later.
She nods her head and yawns I’m not totally sure if she’s actually paying attention as she gets herself comfortable. I finish preparing for bed and climb in. I blow out the candle throwing the room into darkness.
