Smokes

Chapter 25
Spike POV

I can still smell the sun even though I’m not a vampire anymore… it’s kind of hard to ignore the initial fear I get whenever I smell it, I even still get the feel of myself burning slightly. Psychological bull shit.

The deep rumbling in my stomach signals for me to go down to the kitchen to get some food. Wonder what they haven’t demolished yet… I pull on my leather trousers and go down to the kitchen. The kitchen is littered with people, young girls mainly… just like being back at Buffys.

I head to the cupboard and find the last box of cereal… lucky charms… the god of all breakfast cereals. I use the last bits in the box and the last bit of milk in the carton.

“We’re out of cereal and milk.” I comment to nobody in particular.

“Well then Spike why don’t you go and get some more? We’re practically out of everything in this house.” Xander says back to me, not sure if he was being snippy with me or not…

“Yeah, Faith has been eating all MY hot pockets again!” Andrew says stamping his feet and giving Faith a disapproving look.

Faith shakes her head at him… she obviously doesn’t care.

“Alright then, I’ll go shopping… need some smokes anyway.” I comment trying to hide my glee, okay I know I sound like a little girl but I like being out in the sun, it’s still quite novel, plus I can get the kinda food I like… not that that narrows it down.

“I’ll come with.” Faith comments shoving the last bit of hot pocket in her mouth. “Can’t let Spike go alone now can we?” She comments smirking. She is so onto me.

Faith grabs her leather jacket, slips it on and walks out the door, me close behind. As soon as she is outside she fishes in the pockets to find her fags. (No not gay men, English term for smokes).

“You want?” She asks signalling to the packet.

“Like you have to ask.” I say taking one and lighting up.

“You do realise that they can actually kill you now?” She asks raising an eyebrow.

“Doesn’t seem to bother you.”

“Slayer healing, not too bothered about it… seems my lungs are kinda immune to the tar and stuff.” She explains with a smirk. “But I guess you’re kinda the same right? With the whole ex-vamp thing goin’ on?” She asks with a look of concentration on her face.

We get into Oz’s car and Faith drives whilst I bask in the sunlight coming through the windows. As she swerves around a corner and the back end flicks out with a screech I’m starting to think this wasn’t such a good idea. On the up side we get there quite fast though.

We both stand in the cereal aisle looking up and down.

“How many different types of cereal do people need?” I ask reaching out for the Wheatabix.

Faith shrugs her shoulders at me and grabs a couple of other boxes off the shelves and throws them into the cart.

“So where were you this morning?” I ask grabbing the cart to push it around the corner to the tinned food aisle.

“What do you mean?” She asks avoiding the question.

“Heard you coming in at six, you had obviously been out most of the night.” I explain.

“I just needed to get out, needed some air… needed to go for a run to get some extra energy out.” Nice save, of course I know it isn’t true, but she obviously doesn’t want to tell me about it so I don’t bother to push.

“Do we really need that much chocolate?” I ask a few minutes later as Faith puts practically the whole shelf into our cart.

Faith looks at me with raised eyebrows as if I’m stupid. “Spike we are living with a large group of hormonal female teenagers.” I really am stupid.

My eyes widen in shock. “I am not going down there!” I state crossing my arms across my chest.

I stand my ground, waiting at the end of the isle as Faith walks off with the cart.

When she arrives back she pushes the cart towards me so I can carry on pushing it. I look down at the contents on the very top. “I’m not pushing this.”

Faith sighs at me. “They’re just tampons Spike.”

After some nice Willow cooked food (man that girl can cook) me and Faith step onto the back porch and spark up a smoke.

“So what’s with the Rachel chick then?” She asks.

“She is, not from this world… well sorta isn’t anyway…” I try to explain exactly what she is but I am coming up blank. I tell Faith to “Wait here.” Then go and retrieve the book Wolf boy gave me when he failed to explain Rachel to me. I come back with the book, sit down, open it and start reading.

“’The Powers are angelic beings shaped like brightly coloured, hazy fumes. They are the bearers of conscience and the keepers of history. The angels of birth and death are Powers. They are academically driven and are concerned with ideology, philosophy, theology, religion, and documents pertaining to those studies. Powers are the brain trusts: a group of experts who serve as advisers and policy planners. Their duty is to oversee the distribution of power among mankind…’ hence their name.” I close the book, slightly more confused than I was before I started reading but try and explain it anyway. “Basically she is an angel but not, I don’t really get it… she helped Wolf boy to get everything under control and explained why I was back and stuff… she is quite useful really.” I explain before taking a very long drag on my smoke.

“Right.” The fact that she looks more confused than me boosts my confidence slightly. “She bats for the good guys right?”

”Far as a know.”

”Should have just left it at that.” She says running her hand through her hair. “Why doesn’t she glow? I always imagined angels to glow.”

”I don’t know. Didn’t think to ask that one really.” I tilt my head to the side sort of like a dog does when they are listening.
