Chapter Nine : The Good Ol'Days

She arrived in front of the bar ten minutes early. Shannah stood in a corner to have a plain sight of the surroundings. A police car passed by, the Phoenix tensed and put her hood up.

‘Never careful enough...’ The Slayer showed up on time, finishing a cigarette and froze when a guy with strange lumps hidden under a cap went out of the bar. Nacy’s was a demon bar, a good place to get information, ans that’s where the two brunettes were supposed to meet some guy who knew the First’s Offspring’s lair. Shannah walked over Faith who greeted her with a hug.

“Good to see you, Birdy! So, are you ready to scare the shit out of this guy?”

“Like the good ol’days!” the younger girl grinned and followed her friend inside. They ordered two glasses of JD and waited.

“You know...I’ve never apologized to you...” The Phoenix began, her eyes stuck on her glass. “I mean...I should have talked to you. But I thought you’d be the one who could really understand my choice to leave.”

“Yes, I did. I do.” Faith replied calmly.

“I didn’t want it to be this way.”

“I wish I could’ve been here for you... that you could have trusted me enough to tell me.”

“I did, but the sitch was quite complicated and-”

“K was devastated you know?” Faith cut her. “Before you came back, she kept on throwing herself willingly to the lion’s mouth...vampires’...whatever!” Shannah looked down. “Seriously I don’t understand you gals! You love her, she loves you, so why the hell can’t you two figure this shit out?”

“Does she?” Shannah slowly lifted her head to meet Faith’s eyes, only to get a ‘WTF’ look. “I don’t know, I guess it’s too late now...or too early-”

“Demon’s here” The Slayer stood up and rushed to the guy. After one hour bullying the poor little demon blabber, the two girls finally obtained what they needed.

“I guess it’ll take us two hours to get there, do you have a car?” Faith asked the brunette who was staring at the moon rising above the skyscrappers.

“Nope, but we can make it faster.” The Phoenix dragged her into a drak alley and transformed.

“You’re kiddin’ me, right?” Faith scoffed and moved back at the sight of the girl’s wings.

“Aw, Big Bad Slayer is scared!” Shannah pouted and mocked her friend. “Come on, you just gotta hold on tight! I’ll catch you if you fall, I swear!” Sha added with a mischievious smile.

“Fine!” Faith finally gave up and put her arms around her neck.

“Tighter!”

Thirty minutes later, they landed in front of an old iron mine, outside the city with a huge No man’s land separating them from the entrance.

“It’s gonna be hard to walk around unnoticed!” Faith frowned.

“Yeah..and I don’t think we should go any further, we don’t know their number or even what to expect.” Faith seemed to consider that thought.

“Yeah, you’re right, we should go back to the Academy...” Another frown. “I mean...I should go back.”

“What about patrolling before you go back?”

“Sounds nice!” And they took off to the nearest graveyard, only to jump straight into action. They fought side by side any vampire showing up. Then, suddenly, an entire army of them surrounded them.

“Wow, is it Sire’s Day or what?” Faith chuckled. Shannah beheaded several of them with her blades while the Slayer was about to run out of staked.

“Need some wood over here!” The Phoenix threw two fireballs to the creatures attacking her friend and scored, but one of the balls neraly hit the brunette. “I said wood, not fire!”
Little by little, the vamps were exterminated but one of them pinned Faith to the ground and was blocking her from staking him.

“Get off me you bastard!” Shannah ran over Faith to help, but tripped over a tombstone, falling straight on the vampire who empaled himself on the stake and became dust.

‘Wow, lucky move’ The Phoenix thought, and all of a sudden realized she was on top of Faith. She was about to burst into laughter when she felt lips on hers and hands grabbing her hair to pull her in.

When they pulled away a few seconds later they both stared at each other with shock.

“What the fuck?” Shannah exploded in laughter.

“O God! I’m so sorry!” Faith looked horrified. “Stupid H&H!” She soon joined Shannah in the laughter feast.

“I can’t believe you just did that! And I felt some tongue action!”

“Oh my...” they froze in a second and stared at each other intently.

“Don’t tell B!”

“Don’t tell K!” The both said in unison, and replied “Deal!” with another chorus.

“You’re so lame at kissing!” Shannah exclaimed with a wide grin.

“What? You think you’re better maybe?” The two of them kept on arguing and laughing until they reached the Slayer Academy.

“You wanna come in? Just for a sec!”

“No, it’s not a good idea...she doesn’t want to see me anyway.” Shannah said with a sad smile.

“You two should talk!” Faith sighed.

“Says Miss it-took-me-five-years-to-tell-my-girl-I-loved-her” The young brunette chuckled. They heard the doors open and voices coming closer.

“Hey Faith!” Kennedy greeted the Slayer, who turned quickly around. “Hey K! We were just-”

“We?” Kennedy frowned, though she knew perfectly who was the other one in ‘we’. The brunette looked behind only to find an empty spot.

“Um, We, the All-Mighty Slayer, were just about to get some deserved rest after a long night of labor!”

‘You’re so busted’ Kennedy thought and smiled to herself.

“M’kay, sleep well Your Majesty! We’re going for a late patrol until dawn.” Kennedy said as she passed the older girl.

“Yeah, well...have fun!” Faith entered the building.

“Alright, let’s go girls!” As she was walking to the graveyard, the young Slayer’s mind was elsewhere, filled with memories of a certain brunette with dark eyes. These last days had been quite confusing, especially after she had over-heard Shannah’s confession. But the hurt and anger had slowly turned into something else, something she’d been missing.

“I miss her I guess...I love her but...and she does love me! She’s sounded so scared...and I’m terrified.” She looked up at the sky, hoping to see a familiar figure flying above her, watching over her. But there were only black clouds and rain was beginning to fall. Kennedy sighed and turned into full Slayer mode as she was entering the graveyard, a dozen of young slayers on her tracks.
