Chapter 22

Stepping out from behind a tree, Buffy stared up at the gigantic apartment block that she had just watched Spike and Dawn walk into. The place was bigger than her college! Taking advantage of the fact that the door had been propped open in the hot weather, she slipped inside, her jaw dropping at the marble staircase and modern art that lined the reception area.

“Can I help you?” A loud voice enquired from behind her. Turning to the voice, Buffy was greeted with an obviously false smile from a particularly round and red faced man, his security badge hanging off from his sweaty shirt. Trying hard to hide her disgust, Buffy smiled back, playing up the dizzy blonde to her advantage.

“Excuse me sir, “ She batted her eyelashes, “Can you tell me which way a young girl went? She was with an older blonde man.” Widening her smile she ploughed on, “I’d like to surprise her.”

The sweaty balding man looked at her face, her big round eyes and innocent smile and faltered,

“I’m not supposed to tell you anything about our clients, miss. I could lose my job.”

Her face sinking into a scowl, she gave up before the security guard could give in to her. Watching her stomp away from him, the guard shrugged and went on his way, whistling a merry tune as he walked. She couldn’t have wanted to surprise her friend very much.

Stomping all the way to the hospital, Buffy threw open the door and made her way down the narrow corridors, knocking over a male nurse as he attempted to talk to her.

“Buffy Anne Summers.” Her mother scolded as she booted the door shut behind her. Ducking her head in silent apology, she sat on the edge of the bed. The fact that her mother was awake and well was more important than anything in the world.

“What in the world was that little temper tantrum about?” Joyce asked, her eyes twinkling in amusement. The pounding in her head had lifted this morning and the arrival of her eldest was just what she needed.

Shaking her head, Buffy passed off an excuse about slaying. Hey it wasn’t all lies, Spike was something that her slaying had dragged into her life. For some reason he just wasn’t getting slayed right now.

“So how do you feel?” She asked, her spirits lifting as she realised her mom was most definitely going to be alright. All the gut wrenching discussions about wills and funerals had thankfully been all for nothing. She never ever wanted the hopefully ever distant future to come crashing down on her. She was the Slayer, there was no way she should be outliving any of her friends or family.
