Chapter 82
Tuesday evening - 21 December 1999
*************
“Well, it’s now or never,” Spike said. “Everyone got everything?”
“Are you sure you don’t want us to come with you?” Cordelia asked, sticking her head out of the window of Spike’s De Soto. She’d parked across the street from where Angel’s car was now positioned.
“No,” Angel replied, without hesitation. “It’s too dangerous.”
When had that ever stopped them before?
“Cordelia,” Wesley said. “Remember to retrieve the book after we’ve gone…”
“Yeah, yeah. We’ll look after your precious book, Wes.”
She knew she might need it again. Regardless of Angel’s dire warnings that they weren’t to try and follow, if he wasn’t back in three days she was coming after them.
“Tell him to make sure he keeps the ring on,” Doyle was saying in her right ear.
“Doyle says to keep the ring on,” she called out.
**************
“What’s she on about, Luv?” Spike asked. “Didn’t you tell her I had to surrender it to the bleedin’ Oracles?”
“I guess I must have forgotten.”
“Just pretend, Pet, or she’ll only fret.”
“Never taking it off,” Angel called to her.
“Unless Spike needs it,” she called back.
“We really should be getting started,” Wesley said.
“Bye, Luv. Gotta go,” Spike called out. “Drive carefully…”
****************
“If he was lying to me,” Cordelia said. “I’ll… I’ll… I don’t know what I’ll do but I’ll think of something.”
“About what, Darlin’?” Doyle asked.
“The ring,” she said. “I bet it’s still in the safe back in the old office. When did you last see him wearing it?”
“Now you come to mention it…”
The air between Angel’s car and the studio gates began to shimmer.
“Ooo, look!” Cordelia interrupted. “They’ve got the portal open.”
There was a sudden whoosh and then they were alone. Angel’s car and all the occupants were gone.
***************
“Fuck, that must rate as the roughest landing I’ve ever experienced,” Spike said as Angel’s car came to rest in the shade of a small copse.
“Don’t you mean the only landing?” Angel said.
“Ah, that’s where you’re wrong, Pet. Flew to Rome in the Wolfram and Hart company jet, I’ll have you know.”
Wesley was already out of the car and gathering brushwood.
“Now isn’t the time for this, Spike. Come on, we need to hide the car,” Wesley said. “Angel, go and fetch the branches in that patch of sunlight.”
“Er, are you sure it’s safe,” he said, pulling his collar up.
Wesley smiled.
“Yes, I assure you, you won’t burst into flames. Now get to it… both of you.”
Wesley watched as Angel tentatively stepped into the sunlight.
“Hey! Look at me!” he yelled. “Can everybody just notice how much fire I’m not on?”
“Sssh, Luv,” Spike cautioned. “Don’t wanna attract any unwelcome attention.”
“Too late, I’m afraid,” Wesley said, seeing movement in the trees.
Grabbing Angel’s sword, Spike’s axe and his own Colt automatic from the car, Wesley retreated to where the two vampires stood.
“You take the bloke on the right. I’ll take the one on the left,” Spike said as two heavily armed men emerged from the cover of the copse.
“No, it’s all right,” Wesley said, staring at the two men.
“It is?” Spike asked. “Don’t look like the welcome wagon to me, Pet.”
“It’s Belnar,” Wesley said. “The rebels’ leader. We fought side by side when I was here before…”
As he stepped forward to greet his former ally, Wesley felt Spike’s hand restraining him.
“Don’t mean he’s gonna recognise you, Pet,” Spike interrupted. “Remember as far as he’s concerned, you haven’t even met yet.”
Of course, Spike was right. Wesley realised he needed to be more cautious. He took a step backwards allowing Angel and Spike to take the lead.
Belnar continued toward them. The other man remained in the background and surveyed their surroundings.
Belnar stopped ten feet in front of them, looked Angel and Spike up and down and lowered his axe.
“You must be Angel,” he said to Angel. “Greetings…”
“Belnar!” Wesley said, stepping forward. “But how…?”
“… and welcome to Pylea.”
He turned to face Wesley.
“Wesley?” Belnar asked.
“Yes, and this is Spike,” Wesley said, gesturing toward Spike.
“It is good to meet you at last, friend,” Belnar said, grabbing Wesley’s arm in a gesture of greeting.
“It’s good to see you again…” Wesley said, returning the gesture. “But, I don’t understand. How could you know who we are?”
“We have been expecting you,” Belnar said. “Come, my men will escort you to the village where the woman you seek resides.”
“I thought you said Fred was living in a cave,” Angel said.
“She was, Luv,” Spike said. “Least that’s what you told me.”
“Winifred Burkle?” Belnar said.
Angel and Spike nodded.
Wesley was starting to become concerned.
“Have no fear,” Belnar said. “She is safe. Krevlornswath of the Deathwok clan guards her as we speak.”
“Fuck, Wes!” Spike said. “We’ve only bleedin’ well stumbled into a parallel world version of Pylea!”
