23. Striking Back

A/N: Yup very lucky *grins* thanks for the review and your wish is my command…
Xander caught Willow’s eyes even before he heard the soft tones of her voice in his mind *What’s he doing here?*, he saw the surprise and worry he felt reflected back at him and he glanced towards the source of their problems. Bent over, tending to the potential and apparently playing strangers with Willow and himself was Angel’s willful son, Connor. Xander had been to relieved to see Dawn safe and well too actually care how she had survived. Now he kicked himself for not putting things together. When Dawn had impressed on the potentials the dangers they were in, she’d mentioned Spike and Annemarie being taken by the First but he hadn’t really thought about how they were taken. He’d been too busy worrying about them and trying to ward off the horrible day mares that floated through his mind. Now he thought about it, it all made sense.
Dawn had been taking care of Annemarie and for her to have been snatched away from Dawn someone must have attacked; despite Dawn’s growing strength and independence he should have realized she couldn’t have coped against someone like the Bringers on her own, hell even he had trouble. They were so religiously fanatical and willing to do anything, even die themselves, that they were deadly to fight against. He glanced down at Connor, focusing on the telepathic conversation he and Willow were having rather then what the boy was saying.
*Last time I heard he was in LA with Angel, no one mentioned he was missing.*
Willow sounded a little confused, she’d spoken to Cordelia shortly after they’d awoken from the trap they’d been stuck in and when they hadn’t found Dawn or Annemarie at Buffy’s they’d swallowed their pride and Willow had called LA. Cordelia had sounded a little off but Willow had put that down to them all being worried over the reappearance of Angelus. Then again Cordelia hadn’t been that talkative, hadn’t sounded too pleased to hear they were glad she was back…. Now Xander was worrying if something else wasn’t going on; why Connor was there and helping Dawn rather then helping capture and contain the soulless version of his father he couldn’t understand. Xander could see Dawn had no idea who Stephen really was which meant she hadn’t called up for help either. He frowned as something else struck him.
*Don’t you think it’s a little odd Cordelia didn’t mention he was missing or ask you to come to help re-ensoul Angel? You’re the one person able to do it* He bit his lip *This has all gone wacko. We have to Buffy back, Giles and Anya too. I know she won’t be happy to see him but we need to get Spike and Annemarie back and I’m guessing LA’s going to need our help too.*
Willows eyes were also on Connor yet her mind was linked to Xanders *I think if Dawn doesn’t know who he is we should play along for now, he might just want a second chance with us.*
Xander glanced at her and rolled his eyes *I think that’s a long shot Wils.*
Willow rubbed her hand to her head as she tried to convince Xander *I know, I would say to do a truth spell or keep him away from Dawn and the potentials but to be honest we need him. Without Buffy we are in a big mess and I think anything he says could be a whole load of hooey. And it’s not just him,* her eyes drifted over to Andrew, Xander could feel heartache resonating in her voice in his head *I’m guessing he has something to do with Jonathon.*
Xander cleared his throat realizing both Connor and Dawn seemed more then a little lost and Willow snapped out of their conversation, immediately taking charge. Xander knew the girls were a little less likely to follow him then Willow, between a handy-man and a witch on a Hellmouth, he knew which he’d go for. Ignoring Andrew who was starting to look a bit put out at not being included Xander began to set Willow’s laptop up for the potential’s to go online. The girls looked like they needed keeping busy but were obviously too shaken to do anything constructive, he figured googling was the safest way to keep the out of trouble. He nudged Andrew out the way still ignoring his pleading glances. The last time he’d seen Andrew he and Jonathon had been together; this time they saw him was only a few hours after they finished burying Jonathon. Xander was glad Andrew was tied up, it was a little too much of a coincidence that he was back in town now more then ever and especially as Jonathon was dead.
Xander sighed mentally; neither he nor Willow especially, was fond of Jonathon or Andrew. Yet even after the trouble they’d caused the year before and Willow still holding them as being in part responsible for Tara’s death they had taken Andrew in. Tied up or not, he wouldn’t have lasted more then a few hours with the Bringers in town. Shaking his head Xander set the laptop down, his job accomplished, it was just more then a little odd Andrew being in town and Jonathon being dead; you don’t expect to stumble across one of your old ‘enemy’s’ bodies lying half hidden outside the high school and you do not expect to find him stabbed to death.
Eyeing Andrew coolly, Xander saw him go pale and look away, but not before he saw the guilt in Andrew’s eyes. Xander sighed and followed Willow into the kitchen *Maybe he can help us get Spike and Annemarie back as well* He thought as loudly as he possibly could to her, he was still unable to get the hang of telepathy. Willow paused briefly, wincing as she sat down, she was just about to explain for the third time that he didn’t need to ‘shout’ when he interrupted her own inner mental thinking.
*If I had the help maybe I could grab them both* Xander didn’t even need to hear her reply, he saw understanding dawn in her eyes and she sat up a little straighter turning to face them all.
*Don’t mention Jonathon to them, they’re sensible enough to keep him tied up and it gives us a chance to really hit him with it* she told Xander who nodded slightly and sat down.
*Gotcha. And we’re pretending we don’t know the kid is Angel’s evil spawn.* He ignored the disapproving feeling she sent back at him as he spoke.
Xander had to smile slightly at their reactions as they both explained the plan. Dawn’s eyes grew wide and she looked almost giddy with relief and Connor, Xander frowned slightly, Connor showed nothing just nodded accepting his role in things. Xander knew he would need help to rescue both Spike and Annemarie whilst Willow distracted the First and reversed the weird creature’s hold on everyone but he was a little wary of letting him near the non-human people he loved. He’d heard of and seen first hand the lack of tolerance Connor had had for Demons, namely Angel, though Xander could almost understand that - after all he wasn’t exactly the vampire’s best friend. But the idea of letting him near his probably vulnerable boyfriend and child worried him more then a little, he wasn’t sure Connor even knew who or what Spike and Annemarie were but he worried that the boy would stake first and talk later when it came to Spike. Xander could only hope the First hadn’t disrupted Willow’s spell on Annemarie; if her brother still thought her human and didn’t realize their family ties hopefully he’d help. He pushed his worries at Willow as she spoke, feeling her concern as she thought about it.
“We checked out some of Giles things at the magic box and his house and gave Angel a call.” Willow spoke softly but her voice held firm, Xander saw a slight panicky look at the back of Connor eyes and strangely felt a little more reassured. “They’re having problems of their own which we’d better help them out with once we’ve got things back to normal here. Angelus is back and wreaking havoc in LA so they can’t spare anyone to help us; we were hoping Wesley at least would come down.” Willow sighed knowing how frantic Wesley had been at not being able to help Annemarie, despite the distance between them he still cared deeply for her. Willow had had to convince him of the badness Angelus would cause and the atrocities he’d commit if he even got wind he had another child.
Dawn started slightly at the mention of Annemarie’s first father but didn’t give anything away; Xander was glad to see Connor showed no sign of racing out and back to LA to eagerly stake his father, it reassured him a little more. Xander glanced back at Willow and then turned forward to face the others. “We found a lot of stuff out about this thing and Willow thinks we can use what we have and magic to confuse this thing and distract the First just long enough to get Spike and Annemarie back.” His eyes flicked from Dawn to Connor and he held out his hand. “Sorry to drag you into all this, my names Xander and this lovely lady behind me is Willow.” He smiled slightly, Dawn was obviously itching to introduce Connor and as the boy slowly reached out to shake Xander’s hand she began babbling about him, calling him ‘Stephen’ and explaining how he’d saved her and helped with the Potentials. Despite the slightly wary look at the back of Connor’s eyes, Xander shook his hand letting himself relax a little more as Dawn’s babbling washed over him. They broke off the handshake and Xander sat back down nodding slightly to Willow who visibly relaxed a little as she stood up.
“Now we can’t do this until after sunset because you know Spike, vampires and sun.” Willow waved her hand vaguely as she squinted at the paper in front of her; the haphazard plan she and Xander had thrown together. Xander watched Connor for any sign of surprise or potential homicidalness at hearing that they were also rescuing a vampire but he saw only resignation there. He was more then a little surprised to see Dawn squeezing Connor’s fingers dispelling the resignation briefly; Xander frowned unsure what to make of it and then focused fully on Willow as she relayed their plan.
“We need to prepare a few things; it’s sort of a seat of the pants thing.” Willow spoke cheerfully looking down at the paper. “We found some papers Giles had with lots of different highlighters on.” She smiled slightly at the memory. “Okay so he doesn’t keep the best notes, but who does. Anyway we came across all this stuff in load of languages, my ancient Greek is so not good so we used the Internet to translate most of it.” She looked slightly sheepish and Xander grinned handing Connor and Dawn a couple of pages.
With a blush Willow continued, “Not that the Internet didn’t help but, you know.” She waved her hand vaguely “We found some modern stuff in Giles handwriting taking about ‘Seele stehlen Übel’ and ‘Emotie dief’ but he wrote that they came from very old texts which could have lost a lot in translation over the years. What we did find was references to this a alma a mais escura.” She paused. “The most literal translation of this was darkest soul but the other words in the text couldn’t be found.” She looked to Xander and took in a deep breath. “All Giles notes talk of is what this creatures does; in every other case when it completes its assault there is no one left.”
Xander jumped in quickly to explain. “Well it’s not so much no one left but the first time we found stuff about this, the people acted exactly the same as our guys here and a whole town was wiped out. People that came by the week after the first person went down found only a third of the town left. They guessed the other half had been taken by something else or something…” He averted his eyes not wanting to mention stories of cannibalism from the ones who were left. “They killed the ones who were left, they couldn’t stand to see them the way they were.” He looked down at the paper and read, “Angry and evil like Wolves stalking their next meal, a second later unable to register emotion ignoring all danger and help. They were seen as the living-dead. Not quite Zombies but people alive still, but acting as though they were dead.”
Dawn let out a small cry obviously horrified at that happening to her sister and friends.
“How did you get out?” It was Connor who voiced the question and Willow who answered it.
“We don’t know, I wasn’t going to come out of it; I was stuck. It was Xander who pulled me out of it and helped me regain enough control to use my magic against the thing that was holding us, the soul sucker.” She paused glancing at Xander who blushed deeply. “I’m not sure how he did it but he knew the reality the soul sucker showed us wasn’t real and he was able to stand up to it and call me.”
Xander shrugged seeing their eyes turn to him, he was still blushing as he spoke. “One of Giles notes did talk about some townspeople in ancient Greece who broke free, they spoke of invoking the gods to imprison the creature. Their belief in their Faith apparently allowed them to overcome the lies and break free.”
Willow nodded. “After that report there are not many so it’s a good bet that they managed to call on some kind of magic to do it. It’s a good bet that the First wanted us all out of the way permanently, which means its going to be doing something big an nasty.”
“Which we have to stop,” Connor spoke softly surprising both Willow and Xander. Connor’s eyes were serious as he looked directly at them. “I’ll help you get your friends back but I need answers once we are done and some help.” He didn’t seem willing to go into detail of what help but neither Xander nor Willow was going to press him. Dawn wrinkled her brow in confusion at his words but the look the boy shot at her waylaid it slightly and she relaxed, still having questions but not demanding answers.
Xander glanced at Willow and then back to them. “Agreed” he murmured looking back at Connor. “But we do this our way; no questions asked.” He smiled slightly at Connor and gestured them to sit around the small table where Willow was placing several pieces of paper. “We prepare, then rest up and hit them at sunset; the First is holed up at the old high school doing its evil thing. Willow managed to get a rough location of Spike and Annemarie by scrying but she can’t get closer then below the school. If Stephen,” he glanced at Connor noting the concentration on the boy’s face, “and I are the rescue team we might be able to get in there and grab them before the First realizes what’s going on.” He glanced at Willow who squeezed Dawn’s hand slightly seeing the worry on the teens’ face.
“The rest of us will go to the magic box. Dawn you’ll have to keep control of the girls and protect the shop, the instant the Bringers know we’re near its bye-bye potentials if we aren’t careful.” Willow worried her lip slightly as she spoke. “I think this demon creature magically tags anything connected to the First as ‘not to eat’ and anything else untagged it considers a buffet. That’s why all the normal demons were taken down too. If I can disrupt the tags and mirror them onto us instead of the Bringers we can confuse the demon into thinking the First’s minions are food.” She smiled sweetly. “And while its munching on them it should distract the First long enough to grab Spike and the baby.”
Dawn and Connor looked notably pessimistic but Xander grinned. “Hey between the four of us and Wil’s magic, what can go wrong?”
