Chapter 21: Epilogue
Two months later
A black Nissan Skyline rolled to the line next to a red Mitsubishi Eclipse. The crowd surrounding the two contestants were cheering and celebrating their favourites. This would definitely be an interesting race although it may have seemed that the Eclipse shouldn’t stand a chance against the monster in black.
Tonight the race would be different. It wouldn’t be a straight line to go down to the finish, this night it would be a circuit race. A nice small circle through the city. The bets were high and as usual it was ‘winner takes all’.
A girl stepped in front of the two street racers and signalled for them being ready. She seemed to get an okay nobody else could see, ‘cause of the cars windows being totally tinted into deep black, and lifted her arms above her head. She waited a blink and then let them fall and the two cars literally jumped into the race. The crowd filled into the road behind the two cars and waved their arms in the air and cheered.
The black Skyline had a good start and had managed to get some distance between itself and its opponent. The Eclipse went into the slipstream of the Skyline and by that tried to save some energies and simultaneously to keep up with the maniac pace the black car made.
They made it through the first two turns without anything happening. Both cars still driving nose to tail. The Nissan being the nose, the Mitsubishi the tail. They went into the third turn and the Skyline seemed to be a bit too fast and it drifted a bit wide to the outside of the turn. The Eclipse tried to gain same height with Nissan but its accelerating power wouldn’t allow it. The black car accelerated out of the bend and due to its more than massive power it stayed in front.
They went for the last turn and suddenly the driver of the Eclipse saw his chance. The Nissan tried to take the bend from the outside, cross its apex and to accelerate out of it before it even left the turn. That left some space for the Mitsubishi to try its luck on the inside. The driver knew he couldn’t mess with the power of the Nissan but with a little trick the race could still be won.
So both cars went into the turn, the Nissan on the outside, the Mitsubishi next to it on the inside. The Skyline tried to steer to the inner side of the turn but got a small shove from the Eclipse next to it and had to brake to not crash into the wall. The Mitsubishi accelerated out of the bend and crossed the finish line first.
“Bloody Hell, you cheatin’ bint. I can’t believe it, I’ m sitting here, still severely injured and playing bloody stupid video games. And the only thing you have in mind is to win at any cost. I think you are the most unfair driver I ever met. I haven’t seen you win one race without tricking your opponent” Spike exclaimed and threw his game pad into the far corner of the living room.
“Oh, puhlease, severely injured? Your wound has never been more than a small scratch to your shoulder and for your information there were no rules about no car touching the other. And if you don’t remember Spike, it’s only a game!” Dawn yelled back.
“Yeah thanks to police boy not being able to aim I am not injured even worse, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a game or not. You won by cheating. You wouldn’t have stood a chance against me and you knew it” Spike answered.
“I didn’t cheat. It can’t be my problem that you just don’t seem to have your car under control…” she had to stop her answer when Spike tackled her from the side and tickled her mercilessly.
“Ahhh, stop manhandling me” Dawn yelled between giggles.
“Say uncle” Spike replied.
“Never, I won’t surrender to someone who can’t even beat me in a video game now stop it…” she was still attacked by Spike’s very fast fingers.
“Hey you two, would you perhaps care to be grownups for a while and join the rest of us out on the porch. Xander said the burgers are ready, so it’s time to eat” Buffy’s sweet voice could be heard in the living room.
“Just a minute, luv” Spike replied still tickling Dawn into the next millennium “I am kind of in the middle of something.”
“Ahh, Spike stop it, I can’t take it anymore…” Dawn yelled, her head kinda became red from the laughing.
“You just need to say the magical word and we can both go out and have dinner” Spike replied with a smirk.
“Uncle, uncle, uncle” Dawn yelled when she couldn’t take it anymore. As funny as it was to kid Spike it wasn’t nearly as funny anymore when it came to tickling. Dawn had learned that in the last few weeks. Spike was the Master of Tickling. He took it to an art form.
Dawn momentarily lost herself in her own thoughts about the last two months. Everything had been so overwhelming and happened so fast.
She remembered arriving at a house outside of Tijuana, Mexico, with Xander and Willow. Xander had told her what all the racing was about and she had wanted to go back immediately but Xander and Willow stopped her from doing anything stupid. So they waited and when Buffy finally entered the house about two hours later it seemed like the world had stopped turning. She saw her sister walking over the threshold tears running down cheek. When she reached the middle of the room Willow, Dawn and Xander where in she suddenly collapsed to the floor curling into a fetal position sobbing loudly.
Buffy somehow retreated into her inner self and it took Dawn and Willow nearly two days to get through to her. She was broken. There was nothing anybody could have done at that moment and so they let Buffy tell the events of the night as good as possible. When she finished the four of them sat together on the bed and cried.
They returned to Los Angeles one day later. Buffy wanted to go and talk to Giles. She wanted to explain what happened. She didn’t know what exactly to tell. She couldn’t just enter Giles’ house and apologize. ‘Sorry Giles, I got your son killed but really I am sorry’ – no that wasn’t an option but she had to see him. She didn’t even now if he had heard so far and if not he must have been sick with worries.
So they returned to Buffy’s house and after a quick shower Buffy left for Giles’ book store. She entered the building through the front entrance and found Giles serving a customer. Buffy walked to the counter unshed tears glistening in her eyes.
“Hello Buffy, it’s good to see you again” he recognized her watery eyes “is everything alright?” he rounded the counter to close the space between them.
“I… it… it is Spike, Giles, he… Riley shot him… haven’t you heard anything, I… I think he didn’t make it” she stuttered.
“I beg to differ” she heard a familiar British voice behind her “but it is nice to see that you came to return my baby to me” she found him smirking at her when she turned around. He was leaning casually onto one of the book shelves lining the walls, carrying his left arm in a sling.
“You bastard” she ran to him and started to pound his chest “you are still alive and you wouldn’t even think one little about how your friends are feeling. Why didn’t you call or why didn’t you come to the safe house like we said?” she was still hitting his chest, although her anger had vanished into tears and she was now clutching his shirt and crying her unneeded sorrow into his chest.
Spike encircled her sobbing form with his good arm and tried to calm her down with comforting words.
“Ssh, baby, everything’s okay, I’m here, I got you, everything will be fine.”
She calmed down and took a step away from him to look into his face. She somehow still couldn’t believe he was standing right here in front of. She had seen the bullet piercing his chest that awful night.
“Why… why… why aren’t you… you” she stuttered.
“Dead?” when she nodded he continued “Well it seems that our friend wasn’t a better shooter than he was a good person. May the devils torture his soul for eternity.”
“Why didn’t you contact me, I was ...” She asked.
“There is no telephone in safe house, remember? I would have come to fetch you myself but I was just released from hospital this morning and I didn’t have a car either” he explained “both cars I could have taken were with you.”
“Oh God Spike…” she whispered and he took a step forward and silenced her with a kiss.
============================================================
Dawn remembered the moment when Buffy and Spike entered the front door of Buffy’s house together like it was yesterday. There he was standing on the threshold smiling at Willow, Xander and herself like nothing had ever happened. She wanted to rip his head of that moment but could just cry. It had been one of her happiest moments in her life although she also gave him a piece of her mind about him not telling anything later.
============================================================
She went out onto the porch behind him to join the barbecue. Xander stood at the grill and prepared hamburgers for everybody. Giles was sitting at the far end of the table having a conversation over the finer aspects of British literature with Wesley. Willow sat next to Buffy, both of them engrossed in a friendly argument about motor management. Spike had walked over to Xander to help with the meat and Dawn settled into a chair next to her sister. Yeah, life definitely was good.
The garage went well after Angel being out of the picture. They were number one in the city. Everybody wanted their cars customized by BSR. It surely did the bank accounts well and Dawn knew that she would never make more money herself than right now. They had a waiting list for cars that could easily go from here to New York and back. Customers had to wait half a year to get their cars tuned. Although the team had retreated from the open streets and its racing scene they still held small invitational tournaments every now and then that kind of held up their reputation, although under secured circumstances without endangering the public. So they stayed out of trouble with the authorities. She still wondered why Spike or the others including herself weren’t interrogated by the police after the incidents with Riley and Angel. The only thing Spike would let her know was that the bodies were never found. Not that she was sorry about it, no way, but she had a small nagging voice in the back of her head that he hid something from her. She would have to ask her sister sometime later about it. Buffy was so much easier to persuade to tell secrets than Spike.
Talk about Buffy, Dawn recognized her sister had left the table and also Spike couldn’t be found anywhere around suddenly. Not again, please, if I have to wake one more time to listen to them making ‘sounds’ in the room next to her she would commit herself into a mental institution, she internally laughed to herself. She was happy for her sister and her platinum blonde man. After everything Buffy had to go through in her life she surely deserved a healthy relationship with a man that worshipped the ground she walked on. She joined the conversation between Willow and Xander about Xander’s way to grill hamburgers and forgot about her missing sister and her boyfriend.
============================================================
Spike found Buffy standing on the front porch. She looked out into the streets of Los Angeles. He encircled her waist from behind and started to nibble at her throat. She laid her head to the side to give him better access and sighed content.
“Spike?” she queried.
“Yeah, baby” he answered between small bites and licks.
“You know, I wondered if you… you perhaps wanted to… to move in with me, that is if it isn’t too early or a step to fast for you” she told him nervously.
He turned her around in his arms and bent down to give her the sweetest of all kisses that left her breathless. He parted from her lips to look into her eyes and smile at her.
“Well, what can I say baby, I am livin’ life in the fastlane.”
