MIDNIGHT AND ROSES - CHAPTER 20

The vampire Laureano carefully followed Angel and Buffy out of the graveyard, making sure to stay in the shadows. He knew that Angel could feel his presence, but the demon hunter was unsure of what, if anything, he should do about it.

This would work well for Laureano, as Buffy didn't seem to notice, nor care, that he was so close. He could smell her arousal at being with the big man and her mind was not on vampires.

It was puzzling to Laureano that Angel did not respond to Buffy as she was responding to him. They seemed to be a couple, but Angel had no interest in her whatsoever. Instead of paying attention to the babbling female, the big man was thinking about... William.

Laureano’s interest was piqued as to why Angel was so centered on Spike. Was Angel looking for the small vampire at the crypt as he, himself had done? Did he intend to do harm to the brother he had not seen in almost a century? If that was the case, Laureano decided, he would do anything to protect his kin.

The dark-haired vampire moved closer behind Angel and Buffy, raising his head into the wind like a magnificent stallion, his nostrils flaring as he focused on the smell of Angel.

The small woman with Angel was of no consequence to Laureano, so he ignored her. All of his efforts were concentrated toward the demon hunter, and what he found was totally unexpected. It was the familiar and soothing scent of... family.

Spike’s smell was all over Angel and Laureano was pleased that William had taken a companion. William had been alone too long, moving from place to place, making it hard for Laureano to keep track of him. There was their blood link, but it was very weak as Spike distanced himself more and more from the Aurelian clan on his quest to avenge his grandsire's murder.

Then, there was also the uncanny resemblance of Angel to Ambrosius. It had unnerved Laureano at first, when he had come face to face with the demon hunter in the cemetery. Now, he was more curious than shocked to know more about this mirrored image of his sire and his relationship to William.

Angel walked stoically with Buffy at his side, barely paying attention to her as she chattered mindlessly about nothing of interest to him.

He would be glad to drop her off safely at her house, then head home to call Spike in England. He couldn't stop thinking about Spike... his Will... for some strange reason tonight, especially since his encounter with the emerald-eyed vampire at the crypt.

A feeling of foreboding that all was not well kept niggling in the back of Angel’s mind, even though he could still feel Spike's presence through their blood link. At least that gave him some comfort, but he would rather hear his lover’s voice telling him that everything was all right.

Buffy was amazed at how fast Angel had walked her home and took that as a good sign. Maybe she could get him to stay for a bit instead of rushing off like he always did when Spike was around. It was still early and her house was empty.

"Wanna come in?" Buffy purred seductively as she looked at Angel and lightly touched his arm.

Angel shoved his hands in his pockets, clearly uncomfortable with the slayer's invitation.

"Umm... no, actually. I have a few things I need to do before I go home."

"Oh! I could come with you... you know... help?" Buffy pulled hopelessly at straws.

"No, thanks anyway... see you tomorrow?" Angel said lightly, trying to brush off his former girlfriend.

"Tomorrow? You and me..."

"At the Magic Box? Patrol?" Angel rolled his eyes and sighed. He couldn't believe that Buffy still tried to seduce him, even after he had left her for Spike over six months ago.

"Oh! Yeah... patrol. I knew that..."

"Goodnight, Buffy." Angel sighed again, glad that she finally took the hint and started up the steps to the porch.

When Buffy closed the front door after her, Angel's skin prickled. It was the same feeling from the cemetery when he had encountered the dark-haired vampire. He tried to shake off the feeling as he turned on his heels and started down the street toward where he had parked Spike’s borrowed DeSoto and crashed chest to chest with Laureano.

"What the fuck!" Angel roared as the powerful vampire pushed off him and grabbed his biceps in a death grip.

"Please, do not struggle, my friend," Laureano said quietly. "I will not hurt you."

"As if," Angel growled, then brought his hands up and grabbed the dark demon’s shoulders. Pushing his larger bulk against him, the two men fell into a tangled heap on the sidewalk not far from Spike’s beloved vehicle.

Somehow, after a brief struggle, Angel gained the upper hand and was able to pin Laureano's arms with his knees as he sat heavily on the emerald-eyed vampire’s chest.

"Now, tell me again why I shouldn't dust you right here," Angel snarled, and he meant it.

"Please," Laureano said softly. "I am searching for my brother, William Aurelius. He is in grave danger..."

Angel was not easily impressed that the dark demon knew Spike’s given name, but he was interested. The vampire under him would have to work a little harder to convince him that he was not in Sunnydale to harm his lover.

"I can feel your connection to William... Spike... as you humans call him," Laureano continued.

"I can smell him on you... in you... telling me that you are truly his consort in every way. You are... family."

As Angel put his emotions aside and let his hunter's senses take over, he finally allowed himself to believe that Laureano was telling him the truth. He could feel it... feel... him... as part of his link to Spike. He reared back and jumped to his feet, then held out his hand to William's brother.

"Thank you," Laureano said as he took Angel's outstretched hand and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet.

"I am called Laureano," the elegant vampire smiled as he bowed slightly to Angel.

"Umm, I'm Angel," the demon hunter said softly.

Then, in a gesture that shocked Angel to the core, Laureano pushed up the sleeve on his leather jacket and bit into his wrist, drawing blood and quietly offering it to him.

Angel stood frozen, eyes fixed on the dark liquid oozing from the powerful vampire’s wrist. His mind raced to process the unexpected gesture, knowing that he had to accept this most intimate gift from the vampire or risk insulting his honor.

Cautiously, Angel gently gripped Laureano's arm and raised it to his lips. With chocolate eyes riveted on the emerald orbs looking at him serenely, Angel softly flicked his wet tongue over the wound the vampire had opened.

The first taste of the crimson liquid was electrifying and Angel gasped. He could feel the power, the wisdom of the ages, in Laureano’s blood, but most of all, he could feel... Spike.

He felt the familiar twinge in his mind as his blood link opened to Spike and he sent feelings of longing, love and comfort to his blond vampire. Closing his eyes, Angel drew in one small mouthful of blood and swallowed before he pulled away.

While Angel tasted him, Laureano also threw out a link toward the big man and gasped in astonishment as Angel acknowledged its presence with a slight twitch of his head. By the Ancient Ones, he is truly connected to Aurelius and William, Laureano thought. There is no doubt.

As Laureano smiled and licked his wound closed Angel felt an uncontrollable need to return the gesture. He reached down and unsheathed the knife he always carried at his side and ran it lightly over his own wrist. When the blood began to rise, he hesitantly held out the cut to the vampire.

Laureano lowered his eyes and bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment. He softly kissed the wound before he took a small amount, then licked it closed.

"Brother..." Laureano whispered to Angel. "We must talk. William is in grave danger..."

Spike’s eyes flew open and he gasped, squeezing the drinking glass he was holding in his hand so tightly, it shattered into what seemed like a million tiny pieces.

He had felt the presence of another overlay on his blood link to Angel and his head began to throb.

"Bloody hell..."
