Chapter 20
“Hey,” Spike said softly, pushing the unlocked door open and poking his head in. Sensing very little hostility he entered Dawn’s room and closed the door behind him.
“What do you want?” The teen demanded angrily. She was pleased that he had come alone, but there was no way she was going to let him know that.
“I think that as a young adult, you’re mature enough to have a conversation with me like the young woman you are.” Spike said quickly, rushing to get it all out and not offend her. She twitches of a smile in the corners of her mouth encouraged him to continue. Taking a seat on the edge of her bed he smiled softly, his big blue eyes meeting hers,
“You’re smarter than people give you credit for.” He told her with a smile. “You know we were only messing downstairs, but I’m smarter than I look too.”
That extra comment earned him a scowl as the teenage drama queen turned away from him, her body draped across her bed in her most disinterested pose.
“So?” She demanded, her voice muffled by the comforter.
“So, I think we need to have a chat, me and you. Adult to adult, what do you think?”
“I think we could.” Came the sulky response. “About what?”
Ignoring her last question, Spike cleared his throat,
“I’m not going to play games with you.” He told her matter of factly, “I’m too old for you.”
Joyce was smiling by the time Buffy has finished telling them exactly how William and her had met, by the time Buffy had begun to tell them about why she had split with Riley, Joyce’s face was close top cracking point. Even without the extra push that they had received, it seemed the Elizabeth and William really were just meant to be together.
Hearing a loud thud from above them, Buffy, Joyce and Anne rushed up the stairs to the source of the sound, only to find William pulling on the door handle with all his might, one would presume that Dawn was doing the same on the other side because he refused to let go of the handle until coaxed away by Joyce minutes later. As soon as he let go, the door flew open and Dawn was sent flying across her room, banging her head on the wall that faced the entrance to her room.
Joyce darted into the room and Buffy poked her head around the edge of the door to check if her sister was ok. Seeing that Dawn was both conscious and unhurt, Buffy turned back to Spike to ask him what had happened.
Shaking his head furiously, Spike kept him lips sealed about what had happened, instead, tuning Buffy around to see her sister and cradling her in his arms as he did so.
Seeing the pair so cosy together at last made Dawn stop her struggling to escape her others grasp. Falling limp in her arms she continued to stare at the couple, so well matched although she would never have noticed if they weren’t standing the way they were and she would also never admit it to anyone, even on threat of dismemberment. Taking advantage of Joyce’s released grip, Dawn bolted for the bed, diving onto it and rolling under the covers and holding them around her head. Feeling that she had had all that she could possibly take for the night, Anne decided to call it a night and left the four arguing behind her, William’s voice standing out from the higher pitched voices of Joyce and Buffy and Dawn’s muffled yells from under the comforter keeping her up for at least a hour after her head had hit the pillow.
Finally leaving Dawn and Joyce to talk in private, Buffy and Spike made their way down the hall to their room, tiptoeing past his mothers’ room, her heavy breathing undisturbed even when the door swung shut behind them.
Turning on him as soon as the door was shut, Buffy refused to let him do anything until he agreed to tell her what had happened in Dawn’s room as Dawn herself would utter a word about it.
Settling himself on the bed, his legs stretched out as he leant back against the headboard, his fingers idly twiddling with the tail of a stuffed pink pig and began to tell Buffy exactly how her little sister had tried to hit on him, with all the unnecessary and uncomfortable details of her trying to convince him of her undying love and grabbing his crotch as he had stood to leave. By the time he had finished his narration, Buffy was speechless, sorrow for her sister almost overshadowing the surge of love she felt for him. He had tried to speak to her civilly and she had been blinded by her emotions and made a play for something she was never going to get. And the reason she would never get him was that she herself had taken him. And now Dawn was probably devastated because Buffy had taken the very first guy she had ever had a proper full blown crush on. Wiping the tears from her eyes, Buffy rolled over, snuggling into the crook under Spike’s arms and burying her head by his chest.
Sniffing suddenly she perked up her head and scowled at him,
“Who’s Drusilla?”
